Coquille, Oregon May 1959 1959 A gold statue, depicting the Oregon pioneer, stands atop our state capitol; one of the most beautiful in the nation. One-hundred Years of Progress Good education makes good citizens and continues progress. . .from reading history, and experimenting in science laboratories to listening to lectures and designing plans on the drawing board. Students make great strides toward useful manhood. The obsolete is replaced by the modern--sailing vessels by luxury liners, balloons by jet planes, covered wagons by many powered vehicles. All these things have come to be in Oregon in the last one-hundred years. Loretta Hampton, Vicky Freeman, and Barbara Roten standing on our court house steps. There is no place like home after a day at school. To Mr. Willard Mohn .. .for sincere service to our school.. .for the many hours he has spent working with our yearbooks.. .we the annual staff gratefully dedicate this 1959 Laurel. Board of Education Administration Faculty Activities Laurel Operetta N. H. Society Mr. James Blanton Mrs. Clarice Crawford Mr. Jerry Mac-Murray Mr. Walter S. Pierson Chairman Board of Education The American Education System of free public schools plays a major role in our Democratic System of Government and will continue to make our country strong and great. The directors of the Coquille Board of Education are elected by the voters of district 8C and to them falls the responsibility of education in our community. We are fortunate in having adequate state school laws to guide and direct our efforts, making education and scholastic achievement uniform throughout the state of Oregon, leaving local autonomy uppermost in importance. The success of our students, the support of our community toward our schools, and the confidence we have in the graduating class of 1959 is ample reward for our time and the effort spent directing the affairs of the Coquille Public Schools. Mr. Tom Stevens Mr. Charles Ritchey Clerk The school board at work on Thursday night. Mr. McMurray Mr. Hunsaker Administration The American high school at its beginning was geared to train young people for college entrance. During the last fifty years it has continued to serve this group best. Most of those deploring the state of our secondary schools of today are talking about those who are planning to enter college. It is to the best interests of those not planning on attending college to plan a high school course of a practical nature, and it is the first problem of the American high school to fill the needs of those for whom a high school education is terminal. 1 find my work very interesting because I am working with young people. As principal ofCoquilleHigh School I am in a position to watch youth grow into adulthood. This is a great thrill, for I know of, and have taken part in many of their problems along the way. It is the principals job to see that every student has a chance to think and act as a good citizen, and to do this we encourage the development of their minds, bodies and moral standards. This can be very rewarding to students, parents and faculty over the years ahead. :C Principal Our Thanks to the Faculty Our C. H.S. faculty strives to teach us the many things we should know. They teach us not only by textbooks, but by example; that there is a joy in serving others; a dignity in teaching; that we are rewarded for all we do and all we are. The members ofour faculty believe in boys and girls--the men and women of tomorrow. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for this service and for this faith in us. Staff Prints Bi-weekly Paper Informing students of the past, present, and future events, THE DEVILSâ TORCH, under the guidance of editor Donna Brown and advisor Willard Mohn, did a good job of representing our school this year. Many hopes and ideas had to be discarded when the staff was restricted from selling basketball ads to help finance the paper. But despite this difficulty, the staff furnished the students and parents with news in both the COQUILLE VALLEY SENTINEL and the WORLD, plus a bi-weekly mimeographed copy of the DEVILâS TORCH. Enough funds were scraped together to provide the student body with three published issues, one at Christmas, one during February, and one at the close of the school year. SEATED--S. Staff Works for a Better Yearbook Guided, helped, and coaxed by editor, Joetta Miller, and advisor Mr. Willard Mohn.the annual staff, consisting of students interested in journalism, art, photography, advertising, and general business, sought to put out a yearbook that would be enjoyed by all. Members of the business staff haunted local stores, persuading owners to buy advertisements in the Laurel. Other members of the staff worked hard in order to finish the sections in time to meet deadlines. Two after-game dances, a basket social and dance, and the Laurel Party, have helped provide money for the yearbook. The '58-'59 staff have worked hard and sincerely hope that each one of the C.H.S. students enjoy this memory book now and later. SEATED--J. Miller, editor, and A. Mauney, assistant editor. The members of Shutterbugs were very interested in learning to shoot better pictures, which more accurately conveyed the ideas they were trying to capture. The money gained from several projects plus the money paid by the Shutterbugs for the paper and chemicals used to develop and print pictures, was used for the prizes which were given to the winners of their photo contest. The Shutterbugs were under the leadership of Fred Erickson, president; Sandra Erickson, vice-president; Sharon Prindel, secretary; Jeanette Ruff, treasurer; and Dana Kennedy, student council representative. Girls' League is an organization whose membership is composed of all the high schoolâs girls. It is supervised by Mrs. Harriet Osika and exists for the welfare and care of general interests, and establishs friendship and fraternity among all girls. The Girls' League Council of elected and appointed officers meets every third Thursday to outline projects, take care of all the necessary things and plan the regular general meeting held the last Thursday of the month. The highlights of the Girls' League Year includes the Big and Little Sister party, Twirp Week, officer election and installation and at the end of the year, Mothers' Tea, held for the girls' mothers. At the Big and Little Sister party the new girls got acquainted with their big sisters. The girls played games and received prizes for the most interesting costumes. Twirp Season was concluded with a dance held after a football game to which the girls had to ask the boys. During the year the League sponsored dances and candy sales. The new officers for the year 1959 were elected, then installed in an impressive ceremony January 29. The outgoing officers were given white carnations by the newly installed ones who received red ones. The annual Mothers' Tea was held in May with the home economics class, directed by Mrs. Helen Hollenstead, giving their style show. The Girl of the Year, selected by vote from the senior Girls of the Month, was introduced. 20 Have you ever seen such a sight in your life? ROW ONE: T. Percy, G. Hodge, V. Sloan, S. Grimes, C. When the Christmas holiday rolled around, the band, choir, and girls' and boys' glee clubs combined their efforts to present a Christmas Concert of sacred and novelty music. The band also toured Coquille's elementary schools, providing students with entertainment and boosting the holiday spirit. A Spring Concert and a Variety Show were also main activities of the band this year. 27 Devilaires Keynote Spirit This year Devilaries, organized after football season, supplied the music for the District Jamboree held at Coquille, and at all other home games. Football Team Headed by New Coach A Coquillite fights hard as coaches look on from the sidelines! 37 Looks like they are ganging up on you, Kent. Afternoons of long, hard practices, bus trips, bruises, and dressing room jitters are memories of the '58 football team and our new coach, Mr. Vlcek. Coach Vlcek, in his first year, worked hard with the boys, and as a result we had a clean, hard fighting team. In the first league game of the season, the Red Devils were beaten by the Brookings Bruins, who battled from a 6 to 0 halftime to a close of 19-13. The Red Devils dumped the Pacific Pirates 39 to 0. In tlte course of the game, Waggoner made two good long drives, one for 47 yards and the other, 46 yards. Harley Nealey made a 62 yard run in the last two minutes of the game. TheRed Devils bested Gold Beach in a 43-25 game. In three minutes time, Waggoner plowed over from the three, after a 42 yard aerial. Arnold Cullum set up the score, to start the touchdown parade. End, Jack Hunt, who played an all round bang-up game for Coquille, tucked in a pass from Waggoner and ran a beautiful 47 yards to score in the second period. Coquille had a rough game with Bandon which ended 24-14 in the Tigers' favor. In the last game of the season, the Red Devils won a hard-fought game with Myrtle Point, 7-0. This year's record of five wins, four losses certainly shows much improvement over the '57 season's two wins, six losses, and one cancellation. Since the 1957 team was one of the youngest in our history, the majority of the boys had one or two years of high school ball remaining. This experience of working together has been a great help to the varsity squad. Because our fine coaching staff will be working with an experienced group of boys, our school can look forward to a fine season next year. ROW ONE: D. Robinson, B. White, R. Sanders, R. Bundy, M. The officers, elected at an early fall meeting, and Mr. Townsend their advisor, led the group in their projects. New members were brought in after the assemblies awarding football and basketball letters and after the awards assembly for track lettermen in the spring. Senior Gary Griffith was chosen as the most valuable player on the football team by the C Club this year. Midway in the year, pins were ordered for the members of this letterman honorary. M. The boys again this year had a very successful intramural program. In the early fall football was played with the sophomores taking first place and the seniors, second. When the individual sports program was completed, Mike Pearl and Jim Jarvis had captured first place in badminton doubles, and Jim also first in the singles tournament. The table tennis games found Ray Fields coming out on top. Basketball and baseball were played in the fall and spring with equally fine turn-outs of interested boys. The school is very proud of this active group under the direction of Mr. Jarvis. 47 Oh, come now girls, your feet aren't that ticklish, are they? The Pep Club worked hard with the Rally Squad this year in helping to urge our team to victory. And girl who wished to join the club was invited to do so. New members were initiated at the annual Serpentine. The Rally Squad, composed of Junior and Senior girls, held regular practice sessions to learn the peppy new steps and yells they initiated at the first football game. Throughout the year the Rally Squad and Pep Club held a successful drive to improve the school spirit. 51 CAdsS $ LEFT TO RIGHT--J. Miller, Treasurer; H. Pribble, President; G. Russell, Vice-President; K. Freeman, Student Council Representative; J. Grant, Secretary. How does it feel to be a Mighty Senior? This question came with envy from underclassmen on September 2nd. It was answered in tones equally filled with wonder. Gosh, I don't feel much like a Senior! It seems like only yesterday that we first timidly wandered down the wide halls, awed by the aura of excitement and sophistication surrounding CHS. But in these past four years, as we have become an integral and working part of the senior high, some of the magic has disappeared. We've discovered that every project involves work as well as play. Rising to this challenge, our members made their mark in athletics and scholarship alike, attaining new goals and setting ever higher standards of achievement. One of the highlights of the year was the beautifully decorated Senior Ball in April. In true Senior fashion, we were head over heels in activities right up to the wire, with the traditional Senior picnic on May 20th. With these many activities behind us, and graduation right upon us, most of us at last feel like Mighty Seniors. Suddenly we realize that soon this title will no longer belong to us, for we will have joined the ranksof alumni, and CHS will be but a nostalgic memory. That was the main topic of conversation for most Juniors on the first day of school. About the time everyone began to be accustomed to the grindâ of school work, our shiny gold class rings arrived, and everyone proudly displayed his. With the help of our adviser, Mr. Townsend and Mr. Snider, we sold concessions at the football games and sponsored an after-game dance, in order that our prom would be the best ever. Transforming the gym balcony into the South Pacific, complete with the tropical island, BALI HAI.was a hard job,but when it was completed, it was agreed that the Junior Prom was Some Enchanted Evening. Members took an active interest in the school music and sports programs, as well as their own class projects. One such project was sponsoring the dance after the Red Devil Elevenâ beat Waldport. (The dance, by the way, was equally successful.) In the fall, we gave the annual Freshman-Sophomore party,a bang up affair at which everyone danced and ate to their heartsâ content. In addition to these extra-curricular activities, we were also faithful to our academic courses, to the extent (we hope) that we'll be happy as Juniors next year. At the annual Freshman-Sophomore party, Freshmen were allowed to wear the symbol of their class--paper dunce caps. However, delicious refreshments and a dreamy dance more than compensated for this indignity. After one of the football games, a dance was sponsored by the Freshmen. The treasury really profited by this, reported the class advisors, Mrs. Carlstad and Mr. Snoddy. LEFT TO RIGHT--M. Sisk, Student Council Representative; L.
