The student body chooses seven girls by popular vote. The girl with the highest number of votes is queen and the following six are attendants. This year the May Day event was held April 29, the theme being “Tunes of the Half Century.” ji PRINCESS MARTHA BANTA I mk PRINCESS LOIS DUNCAN PRINCESS DONNA GASNER PRINCESS BARBARA SLATER PRINCESS BOBBIE DIXON PRINCESS NANCY ENGEN CLASSES Mrs. Watson, advisor, Jack Sisk, President; Jim Jenkins, Representative; Bill Melton, Vice President; Carol Crinklaw, Secretary. THE GOLDEN YEAR This is the theme of the class of 50” and rightly so. How much better could the last four wonderful years be summed up. Here you can all pause and groan, but honestly now that you think it over hasn’t it been swell? Sure we’ve battled the teachers and each other and worried about exams for days and then flunked them, but don’t the good times make up the difference? Remember the freshman picnic at Croft Lake with cold water swimming and sand in the potato salad, and the Sophomore turn out at Bandon complete with an open truck and rain. Would you trade a rain soaked shirt or bob for all that fun! So what if the upperclassmen walked all over us at first, we gave it all back when we were Sophomores. And for goodness sake remember the games—well you can’t win all the time. So we passed the acid test and made it to —our Junior year where the fun really began. With our usual guests we produced the hit of the decade, ‘‘Almost Eighteen.” So as not to be idle a moment we furnished lavish entertainment for all at the beautiful “Cinderella Ball” and ended the year with another swell picnic. This time at Lakeside. Our up and coming class mates were right in there pitching in all the activities and at the end of our Junior year many gained offices in the Student Body organizations. At this time the most wonderful thing that can happen to a C.II.S. girl happened to seven swell kids. Elaine Trull, Martha Banta, Nancy Engen, Bobby Dixon, Barbara Slater, Juanita Alford, and Donna Gasner were elected pepsters for the coming year. Don’t get me wrong, the boys were right in there pitching too. Who do you think was elected student body president? Don Cochran, of course, and don’t forget Joe Berg, our Laurel Editor, and Martha Banta our hard working Hi-Times Editor. Everyone was topnotch at his activity. Our senior year began well, for few of the old gang had left and some who just couldn’t stay away any longer returned. The group chosen to carry the double load of activities and executive work for the class was made up of Jack Sisk, President; Carol Crinklaw, Secretary-treasurer; Bill Melton, VP, and Jim Jenkins, Senior representative. From these we went on to write new and glorious pages in the annuals of C. H. S. Our class has represented itself in every phase of C. H. S. life from being right up there in scholarship to being tops in all athletics. This year we did a repeat performance by establishing new heights in the theatrical realm with “January Thaw.” Soon we will have our Senior Ball. This year the theme will be “Stardust.” One which will surely give us a wonderful opportunity to exhibit our artistic talents. And so we have rolled around to commencement with just about as much thought to books as I have mentioned, yet, as we reminiscence, we realize that these have been good times and times which in the future we will often rcall as being the happiest in our life. Just to make a happy ending we’re all going on our big Senior picnic soon. An occasion to be long remembered —probably for mosquito bites and sunburn! MARTHA BANTA BARBARA BELCHER Home Ec. Why I remember back in the fall of ’47 when they first entered Coquille High. Come back into the past few years with me and we’ll re-live the important happenings of their High School careers. Remember? Gay Cedarquist was chosen president of the Freshman class. Then there was the initiation, well, you remember that! Although they were just lowly freshmen, they were very active in school affairs. Both boys and girls took part in all the school activities and sports. Finally, they became Sophomores. Bobby Pingleton took over the duties of class president for this year. And remember the initiation the class gave for the Freshmen? There were several boys out of this class on the football and basketball teams. Through this year they kept up their interest in all the school activities. Now they are Juniors and they were really busy this year. To lead them through the year they chose the following officers: Rodney Noah, President; Donna Lee Gosnell, Vice President; Jo Ann Newton, Secretary; Mae Dean Green, Treasurer; and Richard Rankin, Student Body Representative. The class enjoyed a favorable and prosperous year under the sponsorship of Mrs. Engen.. Say, what’s this we find? Two of the yell leaders came from the Junior class, namely: Gay Cedarquist and Marilyn Atkinson. Yes, sir! The Junior girls were well represented in all the school activities. We find that several are on the Girl’s League Council and in the Pep Club. Both boys and girls were on the High Times Staff and the Laurel Staff. The boys who turned out for football were: Rodney Noah, Gerard Jeub, Jim Mullin, Keith Parry, Larry Wilson, Bob Pingleton, Duane Frye, Myles Bonnell, and Chuck Davis. Those turning out for basketball were: Sam Duncan, Gerard Jeub, Jim Mullin, Keith Parry, Larry Wilson, and Bob Pingleton. We find a large percentage of the band was composed of this class. Those in the band were: Robert Christensen, Carol Ann Creagor, Chuck Davis, Donna Lee Gosnell, Mae Dean Green, Kay Hudson, Donna Mast, Sandra McCurdy, Joan Peart, Bob Pingleton, June Sypher, Marilyn Purkey, Lulubelle Seidel, and Stanley Steward. Now that we’ve remembered all activities of this year, let’s proceed on to the social events. You all remember the Junior Prom of course. The theme was “Winter Fantasy.” The beautiful decorations and impressive lighting made this one of the outstanding events of the year. During the intermission Dian Buell was crowned Prom Queen. Gay Cedarquist and Marilyn Atkinson made lovely princesses. And, of course, we can’t forget the play this class gave. “Our Town” was the name of it and Mrs. Taylor was the director. This play had a large cast and although it wasn’t a comedy, it was a huge success. The banquet the Junior Class gave for the Seniors was very fine. It was held on May 11 and the theme was “Moonlight and Roses.” The decorations were very clever and carried out the theme well. Last but not least there was the picnic. I’m sure nobody who went on this picnic will forget it. Everyone had a swell time. Yes, this class has been very busy and has accomplished much. OFFICERS Standing: Jim Mullin, Mae Dean Greene. After a slow start at the Roseburg dual meet where we took only one first, that being Leonard Scolari in the shot put. Then came the county track meet where a rejuvenated Coquille High School team came in second, with firsts in the shuttle hurdles, sprint relay, and the 880 yard relay. They lost to North Bend for first place by only one point. The remaining meets are the following: Hayward Relays, Roseburg Invitational Meet, County Meet, District, and State Meets. The boys out for track are as follows: Jack Sisk, Jim Newton, Don Cochran, Buzz Oerding, Joe Berg, Don Molthu, Bill Melton, Ted Parrish, and Gene Schrag, Seniors. Rifle, ping pong, horseshoes, tennis free-throw, and badminton tournaments were played. Class points were given for the first four place winners. Yet to play are baseball and various other sports. The competition was extremely keen, but never lacking a fine display of sportsmanship.
