That streak of red, out there along the beach!!! You don't know what it is? You mean to stand there on those two toothpicks and dare to say you don't know? My child, THAT is the Senior rocket of 1949, the Senior Class, the invincible-well maybe not quite invincible-but the mighty Senior Class. The Senior Class entered the laboratory of Co- quille in their first year as assistants to the head man. They planned to develop a new type of rocket that would take them to many adventures their last year. They needed a guide so .... they elected Bud Buckles, Pres, Jo Ann Mintonye V.P.g Joyce Taylor, Sec, and Wayne Timmons Representative. Bud Buckles made his letter in football the first year. When they were entertained by the Sophomores at a dance in the main lab, everyone had a swell time. As they entered their second year they felt like old hands at school. This year they elected Warren Jenkins, - Pres, Pat Shaw, V. Pres, Joyce Taylor, Secg and Bob McDonald Representative. xx .14 This year they gave a dance for the Freshmen and a clever assembly program con- sisting of a specialty dance, music, and humorous talks. Boys earning athletic awards were Bud Buckles, Jim Clark, Bob Geaney, Wilbert Reed, and Ken Cusic. Then came the Junior year, a year that was destined to be filled to the top and brim- ming over with activities. We must get our rocket done, as time is growing short, they were heard to say. To start the ball rolling they elected Bob Geaney, Pres, Joe Sayre, V.P.g Beverly Davis, Sec. and Jim Clark Rep. First on the list of activities was the Junior Prom, the theme of which was, Merry Yuletide. There was a big bustle and hurry before the decorating was over, but at last when the doors were opened everyone gasped at the beauty of it, and to top it all off, every- one had a swell time. Next came food, ah yes, food, and what does food remind you of? Of course, how could anyone forget the Junior-Senior Banquet! The food was superb and the entertainment the same. A Gypsy theme held sway over the crowd with bright colors and dashing and sparkling eyes of every girl. After the banquet there was a formal dance where every- one had fun. At last came the day when everyone could drop his books and pencils and go on a good old-fashioned picnic. Everyone journeyed to Lakeside and although it was a bit damp we rode horses, swam, and ate heartily of the huge lunch. In the afternoon some of them went out in boats, but were glad to get back to land and into our solid rocket. Boys making their letters were Clair Howell, Tom Mullin, Art Richardson, Jim Clark, Bill Owen, Keith Johnson, Dean Wolgamott, Bob Geaney, .and Ray Gilkey. Hurrah, we made it and without too much difficulty, and we had entered upon our last year of grind and fun. We started the year off with a big bang by electing Bill Owen, Pres, Joe Sayre, V. Pres, Joyce Taylor, Sec, Pat Popescu Treasg and Warren Jenkins Rep. We were ending the job of our mighty rocket and were at the end of our experiments. Under the able gui- dance of Mrs. Watson, were nearing our goal of the shining diploma. While progressing forward, we had a lot of fun and hard work. The Senior Play was a thrilling mystery-comedy, called Mystery In Blue. Every one worked hard and it was a big success. Then came the Senior Ball, with the theme Blue Hawaii, A lot of hard work was done on the decorating and everyone agreed that it was time well spent. The Senior Picnic is yet in the distance at this time, but if the seniors have their way, it will be a day never to be forgotten. When basketball season arrived, the uniforms were changed to a snappy looking uniform of white, long sleeve blouses and red skirts with jerkins to match. The jerkins had white devils on the back and the girl's names across the front. Big red and white pom poms were used in drills and steps by the Pepsters during football season, making a colorful addition to the football field. The Yell Leaders were Donna Gasner, Barbara Slater and Ted Parrish. They made an attractive and peppy group and led many new yells. During football season the girls wore red corduroy pedal pushers with white cable knit sweaters. In basketball season the sweaters were exchanged for long sleeve white blouses and corduroy jerkins. Teddy wore red cords and white cable knit sweater. The pepsters and Yell Leaders put on assemblies during the year and sold pro- grams at games. They have done much to promote enthusiasm and pep at tHe games. Miss Madeline Morgan, more often called Coach by the club, was Pep Squad 45-C, v... 5 V' 'A . ', 5 L 41 !'43 ',,j-Qfig 1 advisor. 15,-. In 1938 the paper was first printed, and, through much effort of the different editors and their staffs, it has continued to improve up to the present. This year, under the capable direction of the editor, Jo Ann Mintonye, and the helpful advice of the advisor, Miss Orvik, the paper has shown a definite improvement over earlier issues, partly by an elimination of many of the unnecessary gossip columns. Jo Ann, who was Assistant Editor last year, was elected Editor by the student body. She, Miss Orvik, and Mr. James chose the rest of the staff. Martha Banta and Sandra McCurdy were chosen to help as assistant Editors. The Circulation Editor is Patsy Popescu. The Exchange Editor, Judy Slack, with the help of the Assistant Exchange Editor, Carol Ann Creager, has improved on the Exchange column by, rather than merely quoting jokes and boners from other papers, briefly stating some of the interesting news from other schools. The Feature Editor, Jeanette Stone, writes a news column, News Views , which covers many of the small news items which would other- wise clutter the front page. This makes a nicer looking paper. The Sports Editor and Assistant Sports Editor are Joe Sayre and Don Molthu, respectively. The typists are Alyce Kern, Clara Stonecypher, and Elsie Preussler, Charlotte Martin, Pat McAllister, Bonnie Stoermer, and Yvonne Watzling are the Senior, Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman Editors. The Business Manager and Assistant Business Manager, respectively are Wayne Timmons and Warren Jenkins. One of the biggest jobs of the publication was laid on the Ad Solicitors, Barbara Slater and Donna Gasner. Last but not least, because they go out and dig up the news, are the reporters- Joyce Taylor, Lotus Thompson, Frances Kern, Pat Shaw, Joan Peart, Virginia Corrie, Merle Anderson, Lorraine Reininger, Beverly Davis, Barbara Belcher, Barbara Sell, Bonnie Morgan, Colleen Ostrander, Bill Owen, Tom Coleman, Thomas McCauley, Jim Clark, John Davis, Ray Johnston, Claudy Liday, Carl Marney, Stanley Stewart, Mae Dean Greene, Evelyn Randolph, Billie Tuttle, Bob Geaney, Jeanne Van Patton, Molly Wersh, Corkey Horton, Ray Gilkey, Nancy Price. Under the direction of Mr. Carroll Nickels the Glee Club has appeared in a number of programs. One of the most outstanding performances of the year was the Christmas program in which the Glee Club and Band performed several special numbers together. The Christmas program was said to be one of the most enjoyable heard in Coquille for many years. Other performances were the Spring Concert April 19 and the Baccalaureate Service. They also took part in the District Music Contest which was held at Coquille this year. One of the most effective numbers in the contest was the Mass Chorus composed of all the Glee Clubs in Coos County and Roseburg, which performed at the Coquille Community Building. . Some of the numbers enjoyed very much by the girls and also the listeners were All The Things You Are , A Wayfaring Stranger . God of the Open Air , and several attractive no- velty numbers, Jimmie Cracked Corn , 'AGriddle Cakes , and Herman the Violinist . The accompianist for the group was Jeanette Stone who was very faithful in helping Mr. Nickels and the girls. The Sextette was chosen by voicetry- outs from the Glee Club and seem to have A - been rightfully chosen as they have been successful in their appearnaces. This group has taken part in most of the performances of the Glee Club and have done an exceptionally large amount of en- tertaining at the club meetings of various organizations of Coquille. The members areg Soprano, Garnet Cochran and Elsie Preussler, Second So- prano, Jeanette Stone and Kathleen Brock- mann, Alto, Nancy Engen and Betty Wasson. Each girl has certain special tasks and there is some extra work done after school and on Saturdays. Typing announcements, correspondence and other material, working on records, taking telephone messages, checking attendance lists, and running errands are many of the tasks which keep them busy. A credit is given for this work and the girls gain much valuable experience in office procedure. The girls who have worked in the office this year are as follows: Lucille I-Iaga, Lorraine Reininger, Judy Slack, Joyce Taylor, Jeanette Stone, Beverly Davis, Nancy Price, Mary Gaunt- lett, Patsy Popescu, Virginia Corrie. The Coquille Chapter of The HI-Y Club this year was under the direction of Mr. Fred Adams and the Rev. Lawrence Guderian who helped very much with the development of the club since its formation last year. This year the Club performed many worthwhile services to the School and community among those which include the following, At Thanksgiving the club collected food and placed several food baskets at needy homes, noonday dances were sponsored with the proceeds to go for the purchase of needed records for school activities, and the club provided a cabinet for the Public address system 4 W ' eff and record player. On Feb-. ruary 19 the Club sponsored a Sweetheart Ball and elected Charlotte Martin their choice for sweetheart of the year. This choice made her an hon- orary member of the HI-Y Club. Officers for the past year were Bob Geaney, President, Warren Jenkins, Vice-Presi- dentg Joe Sayre, Secretary, Bill Owen, Treasurer, and Ste- wart Avery, Seargent-at-arms. 43 IIENEIIAI MECHANICS The 1949 General Mechanics class, under the supervision of Mr. Snider, completed a very industrious year. The class was divided into groups and foremen were appointed to see that the job was done efficiently. The jobs they completed this year were: building and remodeling desks for the fa- culty, building new cabinets for the new office, building built-ins for the Home Economics room, and new cabinets to be placed in all rooms. Also tops for the new lockers and fa- cilities for the Gym. Good work, boys - Student driving under the direction of coach Spike Leslie is one of the most popular courses for Sophomores in Coquille High School. A brand new Chevrolet car was furnished through Southwestern Motors and the Chevrolet division of General Motors for this course. It is a one semester course consisting of short period classroom instruction from a textbook Sportsmanlike Driving. Following this the students are required to serve a certain number of hours of observation and twenty hours of actual driving. In addition each student is required to meet satisfactory standards on AAA approved testing devices pur- chased by the school district for this purpose. This equipment includes devices to test visual acuteness, depth and range of vision, night vision, reaction time, and test for stopping distance. XL. Q, t PEP HANII SIENIUH PLAY This year's Senior play entitled Mystery In Blue is given a comic twist to make it one of the best and most entertaining mysteries. The story centers around a small hotel Oak Knoll which has recently been bought by a Mrs. Miller. June and Jimmy Blake, a youthful couple, elope to Oak Knoll to spend their honeymoon. At the hotel is Dr. Meek, an antiquarian, who has come to determine the historic value of this decrepit hotel. His actions arouse no end of suspicion and, when a crime is committed, the doctor finds himself hopelessly entangled. The way in which the doctor extricates himself and the romantic developments that grow out of this provide some of the most exciting and amusing situations. Jimmy helps to solve the mystery and receives 55,000 just in time to prevent his mother- in-law from having their marriage broken up. The play was directed by Mrs. Watson and Mrs. Engen.
