She is loved for her depth of understanding, her sweet disposition and her won¬ derful way with small children. For these things and for her part in launching us on our adventure through school we dedicate this edition of the Traveller to Mrs. Collins. We ' ll never forget the work and worry that has been necessary in preparing these pages to meet the deadlines, nor shall we forget the fun we have had in working together. In years to come, when we have gone our separate ways, it is our wish that the ' 53 edition of the Traveller will provide a means of recap¬ turing precious, half forgotten memories of the past. We were a class of twenty bewildered students when we entered high school from the seventh grade and after weeks of learning the way of life of high school students, we set¬ tled down to work. We have been very fortunate to have Mr. Luthy and Mrs. Ryerson as teachers all through high school. Our teachers, other than the ones we have now have been: Mrs. Norris, Mrs. Tayloe, Mr. Anderson, Mr. Calkins, Mr. Casey, Mr. and Mrs. Hudson and Mrs. Tomlin, who left in November. In our freshman year, some of the boys were initiated into the F. F. A. Club, and most of the girls sang in the Glee Club. During this year, Peggy was chosen by the Red Cross to attend the National Convention in Detroit, Michigan and on her return, she gave an in¬ teresting and amusing report. Frances won the essay contest on the subject of the town of Montross. The girls ' softball team was very successful this year. They won the cham¬ pionship for District F. During our sophomore year, the basketball team was organized. The team did very well for first year players although they did not win any games. Again the girls ' softball team won the trophy for District F. Cheerleading was organized. Peggy was one of its members. The girls who took Home Ec. were initiated and what a comical sight they were. It seems as though our junior year was the most eventful. The Junior-Senior Banquet was held in March. The decorations were centered on St. Patrick ' s Day. Peggy, our class president, gave the welcome and Edith Mae was Junior giftorian. The school paper. The Voice of Cople, was started this year with Frances as editor. The girls ' softball team won the championship of two counties but lost in the finals to Callao. Frances was selected to attend the S. C. A. State Convention at Longwood College. Evelyn and Harry were representatives to the Girl and Boy State Camp at V. P. I. Frances and Edith Mae attended the F. H. A. State Convention at Madison College. Frances represented the Northern Neck Federation as a candidate for state office. A May Day was held this year, the first in many years. Several of the girls were attendants. Our Senior year has been crowded with important events. The senior play, Papa Says No , was presented in December under the direction of Mrs. Ryerson; our annual. The Traveller, was published by the senior class with assistance from Mrs. Nelson. The girls ' basketball team played wonderful games and won second place in the league. Essay contests, participation in the Forensic league, ordering and receiving invitations, mea¬ suring for caps and gowns and practicing Glee Club music for Baccalaureate and Gradua¬ tion have filled our year and made us realize that the chapter in history of Cople entitled, The Class of 1953 , is drawing to a close. As we go out into the world on our separate ways, may the memories of our four years of high school, bind us into a lasting friendship and provide us with an inspiration in our years ahead. Edith Mae Jones - 12 - 312 N. Seventh Street Washington, D. C. June 30, 1978 Dear Jack, I ' m sorry you were unable to attend the reunion of the 1953 senior Class of Cople. I knew you would be interested in what all your classmates are doing now, so I ' ll try to tell you in this letter. Edith Mae Jones is doing a splendid job as librarian in the new enlarged library at Cople. Just recently her book. The Atomic Age, was published. Emily Fallin was a stewardess on a jet airliner for several years. You can imagine that there were no strangers among the passengers on her flights. She lives now in Japan which Andrew had found to be such a pleasant place to live that he settled there following his service in the armed forces. Hiram King is Secretary of State and James Townsend is Representative at large of the Council of Mars. Quite frequently Hannah Butler handles calls between the two on an interplanetary switchboard. Frances Causey, who is on the publishing staff for Reader ' s Digest, told me that her son, Billy Jr. , just graduated from college with high honors and her daughter is in her senior year. Peggy Messick looked just as stylish and young as when she was going to college ex¬ cept for a streak of gray in her hair. She is dean of women at Walker ' s Social Service School which was founded by her husband. Evelyn Rowe is now residing with her husband and twin boys in Callao and is teaching physical education at the high school there. Harry Conklin and the former Ruth Hall were beaming with pride while telling me about the youngest of their four attractive daughters winning a beauty contest recently. Jimmy Boyce, who is an actor on Broadway now, flew down from Hollywood to be one of the judges at the contest. Jim Mozingo ' s automobile manufacturing business is very successful. He was telling all of us about his latest invention, an atomic powered automobile that will be on the mar¬ ket soon. Jack, I watch your comedy television show regularly. The improvement in color television is truly wonderful. Your hair looks just as bright and red as it did in high school days. Now that I have given you a report of the class of ' 53, I hope you will soon let me inter¬ view you for my magazine.
