CLASS HISTORY Our class of twelve, graduating in 1952 is awaiting the coming of June, but the happy school days shall always be remembered. Our class, when we came into high school from the seventh grade, consisted of nineteen eager students. After a week or two of moving around we settled down to work. During our high school we have had eleven teachers. We have been very fortunate in having Mr. Luthy as our principal all through high school; also we have had Miss Bouldin, Mrs. Ryerson, Mr. Hudson, Mrs. Norris who was replaced by Mrs. Tayloe in our sophomore year, Mrs. Hudson who was replaced by Miss Connor in our senior. Mr. Casey came during our sophomore year to teach commercial course and Mr. Anderson came during our junior year to replace Mrs. Tayloe in the freshman room. Mr. Calkins replaced Mr. Anderson in the freshman room this year. During our freshman year many of the girls sang in the Glee Club and some of the boys were initiated into the F. F. A. Club. Also during that same year our first annual in several years, The Traveller was published. Dorothy Mae took part in a one-act play directed by Mrs. Ryerson. The play was presented at Fredericksburg and won third place. During our sophomore year the band was started under the direction of Mr. Nicodemus. Shirley had played the clarinet and Claudette the glockenspiel. Our sophomore year was also an important year in athletics. The boys coached by Mr. Hudson won several baseball games, and the girls coached by Mrs. Tayloe and Miss Bouldin were undefeated and won the girls softball trophy for District F. The outstanding event of our junior year was our Junior-Senior Banquet which was held in February sponsored by Mrs. Hudson. The Washington ' s Birthday theme was used. Betty Mae gave the welcome and Ernie was junior giftorian. The minuet was done in costume by four juniors, Anna Burton, Shirley, Clifton and Billy. Also during our junior year there were many things going on in athletics. The boys won several games and the girls were undefeated and again won the softball trophy. Basketball was also started during this year. Neither the boys nor the girls were able to win any games but they played very well for first year players. During this year the class was shocked by the news that Harry Hayes who started high school with us was reported missing in action in Korea. The highlights of our senior year have been: our senior play, Almost Summer , which was presented in December under the direction of Mr. Anderson with Betty Mae and Ernie in the leading parts; our annual, published under the direction of Miss Bouldin; and the S. C. A. which has functioned successfully with Mrs. Ryerson as sponsor. Ernie Keeling is District S. C. A. president. The boys, coached by Mr. Anderson for half of their schedule and by Mr. Calkins for the remainder of the season were unable to win any games but played some close ones. The girls, coached by Miss Bouldin, won some games and played very fine basketball. The school paper called The Voice of Cople was started under the direction of Mrs. Ryerson. Several of the seniors were very active on the staff, especially Clifton who worked day and night on it. There have been many improvements in and around school during the past four years. The commercial department was added with typewriters and tables. There has been an extra class room added and the heating system has been converted from coal to oil. There has been a new six inch artesian well installed. The building of a much needed gymnasium was undertaken by the P. T. A. and much progress has been made on it. Cople students contributed $762. 00 through their cinder block drive. As our class departs from Cople High, we leave our motto: Forward ever; backward never. By Billy Payne
