We, a class of twenty six girls and boys, came Into high school from Mrs. Douglas ' seventh grade very excited and eager for the priv¬ ileges of high school students. After two or three weeks of asking questions and finding our class rooms, we settled down to work. During our high school years we have had ten teachers. It has been our great fortune to have Mr. Luthy as our principal all through high school; also Mrs. Ryerson, Mrs. Hudson and Mr. Hudson. Mrs. Norris, who left during our junior year, was re¬ placed by Mrs. Tayloe, Mr. Lowder was our home room teacher during our freshman year and Miss Bouldin took his place in our sophomore year. Last year Mr. Casey came to teach the commercial course and Mr. Anderson came this year to replace Mrs. Tayloe in the freshman room. At the beginning of our freshman year we started using the new cafeteria. Many of the girls sang in Glee Club and some of the boys were Initiated into the F. F. A. Club. The girls of the class will long remember our initiation into the Home Economics Club during our sophomore year. Also that same year our first annual in several years was put out under the direction of Miss Bouldin. Ralph Davis entered the public speaking contest sponsored by The Virginia Bankers Association and won third place. Marianne Hundley took part in a one-act play directed by Mrs. Ryerson. The play was pre¬ sented at Fredericksburg and won third place. The outstanding event of our Junior year was our Junior-Senior Banquet which was held in April, sponsored by Mrs. Hudson. Shirley Cusick, our class president, gave the welcome and Effie Sydnor was Junior giftorian. A musical sketch was presented by Alice Fallin, Laura Hall, Margie Causey, and Joan Coates. Ruby Sisson and Shirley Cusick also provided entertainment by tap dancing. Those who won honors in the public speaking contest that year were: Marianne Hundley, second place and Ralph Davis, third place. Our junior year was also an important year in athletics, for the boys, coached by Mr. Hudson won several baseball games and the girls, coached by Mrs. Tayloe and Miss Bouldin, were undefeated and won the girls softball trophy for District F.. We are proud to claim Laura Hall and Sarah Bailey who played in the cham¬ pionship game. Clay Straughan and Jack Boyce have also taken a leading part in all sports. From our original twenty six who entered high school, we now have fifteen seniors; Eleanor Anthony, Sarah Bailey, Jack Boyce, Margie Causey, Joan Coates, Ralph Davis, Laura Hall, Alice Fallin, Shirley Cusick, Landon Hundley, Marianne Hundley, Clay Straughan, Edna Trader, Ruby Sisson, and Effie Sydnor. The highlights of our senior year have been our senior play, Melody Jones”, which was presented in December under the direction of Mr. Anderson; our annual, The Traveller , being published under Miss Bouldin ' s direction; and the S. C. A. which has functioned successfully with Mrs. Ryerson as sponsor. The boys and girls basketball teams were organized with Mr. Anderson coaching the boys and Miss Bouldin the girls. Although they were unable to claim any victories, they did roll up some creditable scores for first year players. When our commencement parts were given out it was unusual that there were two first place winners, Marianne Hundley and Edna Trader. For the past four years there have been many improvements in the appearance of the school. New fluorescent lights installed in all of the classrooms, and a new stage curtain has been purchased. During our junior year the commericial department was added with fourteen type¬ writers and fourteen new tables. This has been a great help to those interested in business. We bought a new record player with the profits from the magazine drive, and a tape recorder was given to the school by last years ' graduating class. As our class of 1951 departs from Cople High, we leave with you our motto; Learn as if you would live forever; live as if you would die tomorrow. Effie Sydnor FAREWELL TO C. H. S. Dear C. H. S. your memories we ' ll hold In days both far and nigh. We leave our class colors of blue and gold. And remember the days at Cople High. Cople, dearest of all the schools To you we ' ll e ' er be true. We ' ll follow forever your guiding rules. And treasure the friends we knew. Cople, we love, we honor your name. You ' ll never know for we can never tell How much you ' ve helped us since we came. And so from the class of ' 51- a fond farewell. Eleanor Anthony President Clay Straughan Vice-President....jack Boyce Sec. Treas.Landon Hundley Sponsor.Miss Bouldin Eleanor Anthony Sarah Bailey Margie Causey Joan Coates Shirley Cusick Ralph Davis Alice Fallin Laura Hall Marianne Hundley Ruby Sisson Effie Sydnor Edna Mae Trader Imagine, if you will, me, Joan Coates in 1961. Styles have gone througfi another cycle and I am modishly dressed in knee length dress and am wearing my hair in a bun at the back of my neck. Life is made easy for me by my thoughtful six-foot husband and is made happy by our two little blue eyed boys Having seen the picture of me I know that you are anxious to see your¬ selves and your classmates and learn what changes the ten years since we left Cople have brought about. Some, you may have already guessed, but some things will no doubt surprise you. Eleanor Anthony has grown in dignity, reduced in stature and slowed down her walk as she, the Supervisor of Nurses, cruises the halls of Grace Hospital. Sarah Bailey is a receptionist for a handsome dentist in Baltimore. Incidentally he is a bachelor. Jack Boyce is demonstrating the new 16-cylinder Super Duper De Luxe for the Tucker Hill Motor Company. There is no car around that gets to more football, baseball and basketball games. We hear Margie Causey is now residing with her husband in California. He is a naval officer of great promise. Shirley Cusick Is private secretary and chief office boss of Poxwell and Poxwell Pishing Fleet incorporated at Beale ' s Wharf. Shirley spent several years in Baltimore waiting for her ship to come in and this parti¬ cular job to materalize. Ralph Davis Is now owner and manager of the largest Big Men ' s Shop in Virginia. Ralph says he carries no sizes under 46. We hear that he is often called on to speak to various civic groups In the state. Alice Fallin Is kept very busy trying to see that Chester stays on his diet in that he is a great baseball player. Laura Mae Hall is secretary to the good-looking boss at the Ashley ' s Shoe Company in Montross. Landon Hundley became so Interested in the chicken feed business that he started a business of his own. Pounding a typewriter in his office among the glowing ads for growing mash and chicken starter Is little Ruby Sisson, still trying to Stretch that 4 feet 11 to 5 feet. I lost track of Marianne Hundley for a long time and finally discovered that she is sailing the seven seas as a Navy nurse. She had planned to be a nurse but the Navy also held an irresistible attraction for her. Clay Straughan is Director of Athletics at the Westmoreland Consolidated School. If you want to get in touch with him anytime after school hours, ride over around Hyacinth. Effie Sydnor is busy at Medical College with bunson burners and labora¬ tory equipment. I understand Effie still isn ' t married. Edna Mae Trader has a full-time job at the old school teaching three classes of English and two of history. I hope that your future as It here appears may please you and tnat all the years ahead may bring you health, happiness, and prosperity.
