Coplayite Presented by the Senior Class of 1958 Administration Page 3 Classes Page 10 Sports Page 25 Clubs Page 30 Seniors Page 41 Advertising Page 59 Class History Turning back the pages of time to Sept. 1952, we recall a bewildered and excited group of seventh graders adjusting themselves to a new school routine and trying hard to mold themselves into a future, potential high school class. Those early years hold many recollections: our first plays, Wise King Jason and Peter Visits America --roller coaster rides at Domey Park--shop products our boys were proud (?) to take home--fashion revues presented by the Home Ec. department and who could forget those wonderful slave drivers--the Seniors! New additions to our class arrived in the ninth year. With our new found friends and the proud name of Freshmen, we buckled down to selecting prospective courses, which were big factors in deciding the future. The first unforgettable social event was the Sweetheart Hop with Frances Ivankovits crowned queen. The important high school years were filled with many wonderful experiences and events. Many we shall remember and cherish, such as odorous chem experiments, gym exhibitions, English true and false quizzes, pep rallies and SMEAR EM, WILDCATS! , going steady, dozing off in Lit Class, proudly showing off new class rings, Sputniks, strenuous practices, 10 laps around the track, monotonous calisthenics, pre-game jitters--defeat or VICTORY !--white swans blue ribbons, dreamy music, and the prom with its lovely queen, Joanne Piha. Senior days sped by leaving thoughts of the wonderful friendships we made and the mixed-up fun we had. The idea of homework faded but there remained such lingering memories-- You Are There movies--our favorite subject, study halls—the friendly discussions of the yearbook staff--peppy cheerleaders—the big game--kneesocks, crew necks, and flat tops--interior decorating at Christmas time--the Senior Debate--exchanging name cards and pictures—Senior Day and the class Banquet—the most memorable night. Commencement. Tear this page in life from the pages of time, and let memories dim, we always turn to The Coplayite, and recall the pleasant memories at C.H.S. We, the graduating class of 1958, bid Farewell! 2 ■ Administration Supervising Principal William T. Schetlock TO THE CLASS OF 1958: The home and the school are both engaged in the business of preparing you for living in an adult world. We are hoping that the adult world into which you go will be better because you will try to make it so. The scheduled 1957 football campaign at Coplay High School was surveyed with optimistic vision by Coach Steiner. He predicted this season would be the best in ten years. The final count showed his prognostication to be on the level. After Slatington and Catasauqua inflicted defeats on the determined Wildcats, they bounced back verance and fortitude to be victorious over Jim Thorpe and Bangor. Following another defeat by Nesco] team closed the grid season by edging a good Parkland eleven 14-12, thus producing the best record at 25 years—3 wins, 3 losses. The entire squad exhibited the vital element--the will to win—throughout the campaign and our school c very proud of this fine 1957 football team. Here's hoping that future football squads will follow in the paths cess and teamwork. With the entire first team of a year ago on the varsity squad, the J.V. basketball outlook appeared gloomy. However, the boys ignored this morbid prospect and exhibited a fine brand of basketball. The season was marked with several bumps and rough times but the Baby Wildcats proved that they had both stamina and basketball savy. As the season gradually came to a close, the wildcat yearlings had produced a neat but not gaudy 12-9 record. Here's hoping they continue to carry their experience and talent into their future varsity years. Basketball A highly praised varsity team began the season with several close games causing much excitement and many jangled nerves. The preliminary games were all ours. Except for Whitehall, which caused the worst of all nerve conditions by inflicting a one point loss. In spite of this fine pre-season start, the league opening was disappointing, yet after several other games the team settled down and brought home the bacon, very greatly sought after victories. The second half of league competition was a different story in that we were continually among the top few all the way. The team worked smoothly and uniformly. For example, upon closing the season with Wilson Boro, we had a terrific battle, defeating them by a one point margin in the closing seconds of the game. We entered the Class C Playoffs and conquered Cass Twp. for the District 11 title, but our quest for the Class C State Title was stamped out by a towering Jenkintown aggregation. We are proud of our team and would say they were quite successful. SITTING: J. Toth, G. Trively and J. ger; R. Sommers, W. Heller, E. -captains; J. Orban, SL Kropf. STANDING: T. Ritter, Mana-r. The purpose is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school, and community high standards of Christian character. This is done through the discussion of problems in Teen Talk, a magazine which deals with the most common problems of teenagers. Its main function is to help boys to help themselves, which is accomplished by a platform of service supported by the fourC” legs--clean speech, sportsmanship, scholarship, and living. A white cross of purity in thought and action surrounds a red triangle of growth in mind, body, and spirit giving it a crowning point of aid through accomplishment. Hi-Y Club 35 SITTING, L. to R.: D. Living in an atomic age calls for new and better outlooks in all fields of science. Only by modern and scientific thinking, basically obtained in our schools, can we hope to achieve our goals. Arousing our curiosity in science club activities by experiment and observation arouses in its members, the future citizens of America, the importance of the present and future undertakings by our scientists and its relationship between United States and the world. 36 P Dal Pezzo B Bradcr E Loikits, A. Recipe for a wonderful evening: Date: May 17, 1958 Place: Allentown's Women's Club Music: The Scotts-men Blend in a room of atmosphere and friendship for several hours. Queen with attendants. Class Prophecy Touring Coplay after an absence of ten years, we find many changes have been made. Coplay and Allen Township have merged giving us a population of just about 6,000. Walking through the town we see a newly published paper. It seems like CAROL ANTHONY'S Coplay Clippings has become the town newspaper. Let's look through it . . . In the advertising section there is an ad for PHYLLIS BETZ's Dance Studio. We all knew Phyl's excellent dancing would lead to something big. FRANCES IVANKOVITS has taken over what once was Dal Pezzo's Steak House. Rudy has retired and has given the business to Fran who is doing quite well. Here's another ad announcing the grand opening of a new bowling alley in town. JIM LENDL and WILLY YANDERSITS are the proprietors. Hmmm—free bowling lessons given on the side. DON BELTZNER has a thriving business, too. He opened a Used Car Lot. Still looking for parts for the purple hot rod you used to have, Don? DOT JONES is married, and on the side is doing a beautiful job of interior decorating. Her latest undertaking seems to be rearranging things at the high school. Look on page one--local people make good. PAT REINHA RD, GERALD MOHR, and GEORGE LONGENBACH have each received their Master's degree in teaching and are doing very well for themselves in the field of education. What's this! ! JOHN SUPERKA has been accepted in Washington as Chief Aide in the Military Defense Department. We all hoped Jack's studying would pay off. BURL KOEHLER and his band are playing at the opening of the new Coplay movies. The owner is BARBARA NEEDHAM, who always did have a yen for movie-going. Preceding the first movie will be a fashion revue. Chief model and dress designer will be LAURA KOEHLER. Laura always did have that special way of wearing clothes. I see she will be most happy to answer any questions. JULIUS ROCKOVITS seems to have gone into the book business. Here is an ad stating that All Best Sellers Can Be Found Here. A list of the best books compiled by Julius can be gotten for the asking. Rocky always did have good taste in reading material. I notice one of the best sellers on the list is written by PHYLLIS DAL PEZZO. The knowledge she acquired in her high school days prompted her to write this best seller— All Questions Answered. Ah, here's a sign advertising Tom-Sen Beer. Who could the owners be but TOM RITTER and JIM SENTIWANY. They must have gotten sick of that Vitamin N from their high school days. STEVE STEIRER has opened, of all tilings, a catering service. We specialize in weddings. It looks like it paid off for Steve's attending all those weddings in his senior year. DENNY REPPERT has opened a hunting lodge. He was another one who learned the ropes during his senior year. So that's what happened to Denny that week during deer season. VIVIAN REPPERT has done quite well for herself. She is now sole owner of the new and better Promised Land Cabin Development. I'll bet those summers spent up there gave her the needed experience. Anybody need a baby sitter? Just call JEANETTE LENDL. Age limit is from 1 to 18 years. Experience plus good references. Appointments only. Now for a look around the old home town. Here is the newer and bigger Coplay Discount Fair. As we go in we see MARION RESH still working as cashier. What's that, Marion? You now have become owner of your own cash register. While browsing through the appliance department, we happen to be tuned in on a T.V. show. The announcer looks familiar. It's KERMIT KERN. He seems to be advertising a new sneeze remedy. Kermit should have thought about stopping those sneezes back in his senior year. Anyway, back to the show. They're previewing a new film. Wait, that looks like JOHNNY ORBAN. Orby must have given up his thoughts about Lehigh and taken advantage of his good looks for something more alluring. Did you notice the beautiful art work in the C.D.F.? After inquiring around, we find that CHARLES SIPOS is the genius. He is in charge of all advertising and art work for the Discount Fair. No wonder they have so many customers. Across the street is competition for the Coplay Discount. A place called Two Dolls. The owners are none other than JOANNE PIHA and BETTY BUNDY. I hear they are selling things at large discounts. This shows very well for MARLENE EDELMAN, or she would never be able to clothe all of her nine young ones. Over here, is a little out-of-the-way business establishment owned by our own yearbook editor, GARY SCHNECK. After inquiring around we find that he is in a rather shady business--selling test answers to the seniors at C.H.S. I guess he figures someone should have the right to his unused answers. Did you notice all the fine new buildings adorning Coplay? All of them live up to the new, modern, extraordinary standards. The creator of these is JIM OAKES, now a well-known architect. We come across a guided tour car and guess who is driving it. None other thanGLENDA MYERS. She really must have a good business, for no one knew the streets of Coplay any better than Glenda. As we take a ride in the car, we come to the farm section of Coplay. A brand new building has been erected. Why it's a new Dairy Herd Improvement Center. Proprietress--JO CESANEK. We always knew Jo had a way with cows. On the way back we pass through Stiles. BARBARA OSWALD has become so interested in the banking business that she is part owner in the newly built Bank of Stiles. We are now back in town again. What a blast! It looks like they are using Coplay as an atomic testing ground. This calls for a further checking. It turns out to be JOHN TOTH in one of his many experiments. He is well on his way to being one of the top chemists in the country. GEORGE TRIVELY has really gone places. He is assistant coach at C.H.S. His speciality is basketball demonstrations of the different plays. I bet the floors were never cleaner at dear old C.H.S. PENNY KOSITS doesn't have to work any more. She and her husband are seen in many places spreading good will for Pepsi-Cola. At the present time she is part owner of the company. How about a Coke, Penny? HELEN RADON, as you can guess, is now happily married taking good care of her ever growing family. She and her husband own their own grocery store. PAUL CSENSITS is still running around town looking for girls. He doesn't believe in getting married at an early age. Chinka always did have a big following of females during his high school days. ROBERT MANN is happily married, too. Occasionally you can see him and his wife twirling on the dance floor with their little steps following them. Stopping by a newstand, we pick up a copy of the latest Hollywood Magazine. A new gossip columnist is doing quite well. It turns out to be our own MYRTLE OSWALD, giving out with the scoop. This concludes our pleasant trip. We saw all of our old friends and things seemed to have turned out rather well for the old gang. 53 Commencement Nervous preparation Commencement Date: June 13, 1958 Place: Coplay High School Auditorium Speaker: Dr. Haupert, Pres, of Moravian College Special Feature: Burning of Mortgage Our speakers Fulfilment of our dreams Coplayite Staff SITTING: M. Camera Shy: F. Ivankovits, J. Superka, G. Dalla Piazza. We, who have composed the annual issue of the COPLAYITE have sacrificed many hours and precious study halls to contribute the necessary requirements and meet the monthly deadlines. Though we gained no fame nor will not be remembered in years to come, it can not be said the COPLAYITE has suffered because of our lack of cooperation and assistance. Each staff member designated as having a specific task, but aided and did anything needed for the sake of the book. By cooperative workers we have submitted a yearbook that we think is an asset to ourselves and to the school. We hope it meets with your approval. Planning and discussion to action and reality. P.
