They sangi at assembly programs and other school affairs. The Girls' Chorus specialized in three voice selections this year. They also studied the interpretation and appreciation of music. Vice President Secretary..... Treasurer..... Advisor....... ORATORICAL CONTEST The annual Junior Oratorical Contest v as held in the High School Auditorium on the evening of April 12, 1946. Mr. Harry Hallman, a member of the faculty, trained the following contestants Pauline Gilly, Matilda Steckel, Jean Lauser, and Joyce Stoudt. Jean Lauser was chosen by the judges, with Joyce Stoudt as alternate, to represent the High school in the Annual County Contest to be held on April 26, in the Coplay High School Auditorium. SSSSK HI-Y CLUB The Hi-Y Club, a service club of the school, is affiliated with the State Y. M. C. A. The purpose of the Hi-Y Club is as .follows: To Create, Maintain and Extend Throughout the School( and Community, High Standards of Christian Character. The platform of the Hi-Y Club is To promote Clean Speech, Clean Sports, Clean Scholarship and Clean Living. The Hi-Y Club is not a fraternity. It has a definite task to perform in the school. Any boy who is attending Coplay High School from grades 7 to 12 may become a member, providing he is willing to make the purpose and ideals of the Hi-Y Club his guide and ideal for daily living. Fink TRI-HI-Y CLUB The purpose of the Tri-Hi-Y Club is to strive to achieve a balance in the social, spiritual, mental,and physical lives of individuals. The Tri-Hi-Y membership is available to all girls who have a desire and a willingness to subscribe to its purpose. This organization is composed of high school girls interested in discussing Christian character. One of the outstanding objectives of the Tri-Hi-Y is to encourage high school girls to inform themselves about the pepple of other nations and to promote a S{irit of friendthip and good will for all mankind. Kramer HANDICRAFT CLUB The Handicraft Club is composed of 20 girls mainly from the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades. The girls were attracted to the club in order to master the handicrafts, and to learn the art of knitting wearing apparel. The members of the club have as their goal the knitting a maroon and gray sport sweater. project of SCIENCE CLUB The Science Club is composed of twenty-four members, most of whom are students from the sophomore and freshman classes. Aeahelp, each member receives at a stall cost, the Popular Science Monthly magazine which presents many interesting topics for discussion. The club serves a useful and constructive purpose, in that it stimulates interest and further inquiry into the sciences which are making so many changes in our present mode of living. CURRENT EVENTS The Current Events Club consists of 25 students, , from the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. mainly The purpose is to discuss the news of the day. ATHLETIC COUNCIL CHEER LEADERS We v.ish to express our appreciation to Supervising Principal Prof. William Shetlock, Mr. Russell Stettler, Mr. Samuel Balliet, and Mr. Marlon Van Horn, the members of the Athletic Council, whose untiring efforts have made our sports program possible. Mr. Balliet, having been given permission by the P.I.A.A., coached our football and bssketball teams. After March first, Mr. Van Horn, a veteran and a newcomer to our school, took ciarge of the entire coaching program. THE CHEERLEADERS VTe owe a great deal of credit to the talented 1945-194-6 Cheerleading Squad who participated at all school athletic events. The girls made a striking appearance attired in their snappy maroon and gray outfits. Their loyalty to the team and school was greatly appreciated by the student body. The Cheerleading Squad is composed of Captain Marie Kukitz and Hilda Hoenzl, from the Senior class'; Joyce Stoudt and Jean Lauser from the Junior class ; and Evelyn Reaser and Margaret Honsel, from the Sophomore class. BASKETBALL TEAM FOOTBALL SQUAD BASKETBALL Coplay'6 Maroon and Gray Basketball Team began its workout early in November under Coach Samuel Balliet. From the very beginning the squad,made upentirely of seniors, gave every promise of being a constant threat to the other teams in the League, for during the first half our team had the advantage of having the two highest scorers—Edward Buck McCloskey and John Reds Schleder—in the Lehigh-Northampton League. Schleder broke the individual scoring record when he made 38 points in the game between Bangor and Coplay. At the end of the first half Coplay was tie with East Stroudsburg for third place, while at ihe end of the second half,Coplay |was in fifth place. j}' 4 Though our boys were defeated by more powerful teams in the [League, they lost many games by only a few points. College 56 20 Independent Games JUNIOR VARSITY The Junior Varsity team, developed by Mr. Van Horn,launched one more victory this year than did the Varsity team, winning nine and losing ten. These promising youngsters made every game a sizzling battle. They were defeated by several teams by a narrow margin.
