Friendship 60 Years DAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY Different Campuses, One College The Natchez and Wesson campuses of Copiah-Lincoln Community College are different in many ways. One campus is larger, one is in an historic town, one houses the office of the president, and one has a beautiful, new vocational-technical center. Even though there are differences between the two, there are also some very visible similarities. Both schools are striving to provide the best possible curricula in Southwest Mississippi, and both are continuously working to enhance the educational environment through improvements in facilities, pro- grams, and service to the community. Also, each campus ' s student body is proud to be a part of a college that cares about the individual. The place to be that ' s Co-Lin, building educational excellence through cooperation on the Natchez and Wesson campuses. _ Board Of Trustees Board Provides Leadership Co-Lin ' s board members are, first row, left to right, Clif- ton Reed, Simpson County; Dr. Billy B. At Co-Lin, students such as sophomore Molan Parker of Mendenhall, get Mid- night Blues as they study into the morning hours for class exams. Copiah-Lincoln Agricultural High School was established on 62 acres of land purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Mar- ion Smith at the school ' s board meet- ing on Jan. 12, 1915. The first building was a student dormitory constructed under the supervision of Eugene McCormick. With an enrollment of 125 stu- dents, the first faculty consisted of R.L. Landis, principal, Russell Ellzey, Ger- trude Davis, Pinkie McCalib and Q.W. Bullock. The first graduates of CLAMS in 1916 were John Homer Methvin, presi- dent; Holland 1. Mullican, vice-presi- dent; Minnie Weathersby, secretary; Ashford Little; Hamilton Pannell; Wil- lie Cotton; Jewell Furr, and Frank Smith. Also, in 1916, the school ' s admin- istration building was constructed by Thompson and Nelson. W.L. Thames became the school ' s second administrator in 1918 and served until 1922, when he took a position at a Texas college. T.J. Ca- they of Tate County became superin- tendent of the school that in 1922 en- rolled 240 students. In the same year a tornado and fire destroyed school property, and Wesson residents housed and fed the students until the facilities were reno- vated. Elected on March 22, 1922, L. Rus- sell Ellzey became the principal of CLAHS, which was experiencing a de- cline in enrollment due to consolida- tion of area schools. Dormitories, such as the one on the CLAHS cam- pus, were no longer needed, posing a problem for the boarding school. During this time, general legisla- tion for the establishment of junior colleges was being passed, and Ellzey began securing data on setting up a ju- nior college alongside the high school, which would get financial sup- port from the bi-county board of super- visors. On June 1, 1928, a $150,000 bond issue to build the junior college was passed by voters in both counties. The high school remained a part of the ju- nior college campus until 1978 when a new high school was built. 64 t JE . « •fFemale students, shown here during the early 1930 ' s, used the Girl ' s Reserve Hut for various club and organization meetings. Top Left, the old president ' s home was torn down during the late 1970s to make room for the Henley Student Services building, the most modern facility on campus. ♦■It ' s been a long time since Co-Lin has seen a good snow like this one which turned trees and even cars to a sticky white. ;i -.•■ - Ellzey became thejunior college ' s first superintendent (president) in 1928. The first college faculty included J.M. Ewing, assistant superintendent; H.L. Hook Stone, coach, agricul- ture; Lula Stevens, dean, registrar- Mary Sinclair, English, education; Katie Lois Stevens, English; Virginia Felder, mathematics; Lillie Mae Cov- ington, mathematics; Ruby Evans, mathematics; W.B. Horton, history; Ellie Jeter, history, coach; Mary M. Thompson, commer- cial; Cleo Holman, home economics; Katherine Strait, science; Genevieve Stout, science; Dr. Oscar Autritt, French, English; Gladys Arrington, Latin, Spanish; Evelyn Oswalt, hall, librarian; El- iza Blue, piano; Mrs. J.M. Ewing, voice, glee club; Mildred David, dramatics, physical education; Fannie Callender, dietitian; Kate Barlow, nurse, matron; and Dr. J.H. Beavers, physician. During the 1930s the junior col- lege was popular because of its low cost. Men could attend the two-year college for $99.15 a session, and wom- en could enroll for $101.15 a semes- ter. In 1932 J.M. Ewing succeeded Ell- zey as president. Ellzey was elected to the U.S. Congress. Christian fellowship, as well as ac- ademic scholarship, became the backbone of the college under Ewing ' s leadership. Maggie Flowers Ewing worked with her husband to instill high moral standards among the stu- dents. Maggie Ewing developed the college ' s glee club, and the fine arts building today is named in her honor. In 1930 Agnes Mansfield, a piano instructor, formed the Colettes, a dance team known today as Mississippi ' s Original Dancing Co- eds. Athletics were also stressed, and in 1938 Coach Hook Stone ' s foot- ball team won its eighth state champi- onship in 11 years. Men and women ' s basketball and baseball became pop- ular on campus. Today, the college ' s football field is named in Stone ' s honor. In 1943 President Ewing took a leave of absence to serve in the U.S. navy during World War II. Willie H. Smith served as acting president of the college until 1945. Today, the col- lege ' s main academic building is named for Smith. 65 following the war, funds for capi- tal improvement were expanded, a new library was built, the curriculum was revised, and faculty salaries and qualifications were upgraded. Ewing resigned in 1956 to become president of Delta State College in Cleveland, f .M. fortenberry, who had served in many capacities at Co-Lin, was named the new president. A vocational-technical building, completed in 1963 under fortenberry, was dedicated in his honor in 1966. Additional facilities were also com- pleted in that year. The junior college band and Colettes continued to add prestige to the college ' s name in 1965 when they participated in the Macy ' s Thanksgiving Day parade in New York. In 1967 fortenberry resigned as president to become supervisor of the Mississippi Junior College Associa- tion. The college ' s fourth president, Dr. Billy B. Thames, a Copiah-Lincoln Junior College alumnus and native of Monticello, was elected by the board of trustees on Nov. 30, 1967. He con- tinues to serve as the college ' s chief administrator. Under Thames ' leadership, the college, which now serves the five ad- ditional counties of Simpson, frank- lin, Lawrence, Jefferson and Adams, has grown and seen many changes. Building construction, old facility renovation and curriculum revision have improved the college as an edu- cational institution. In the fall of 1972 Copiah-Lincoln Junior College opened a co-equal campus in Natchez to help meet the educational needs of the citizens of Adams County and surrounding ar- eas. Dr. Eddie M. Smith served as the first Natchez campus associate dean. He was succeeded by Dr. Howell C. Garner who now serves as dean of in- struction on the Wesson campus. Dr. Edward Meadows currently holds the Natchez associate dean position. More than 3,000 students now en- roll each school year in academic, vo- cational and technical courses on both the Wesson and Natchez cam- puses. Co-Lin has achieved many firsts ' ' in the state and nation since the col- lege ' s doors opened in 1928. 66 fEven during the 1950s, an excellent band w J a trademark of the college. Vince Mangold of Hazlehurst roused the bas- mmmmm ■———■— — — — — tball fans as the Wolf mascot in the early J.A snow fell on the campus during January of 80 ' s. 1937. ■ Co-Lin has the Senior AIDES pro- gram, a federally-funded service which places senior citizen aides in commu- nity related jobs throughout 12 coun- ties in Southwest Mississippi. Co-Lin has also taken the leader- ship role in creating the first state prac- tical experience laboratory for secre- tarial science students. In addition, Co-Lin ' s non-commercial education FM radio station, WCLL, is the first to be established in the state. The college has been and contin- ues to be the stepping stone for many of the areas young people and older adults who go on to assume places of leadership across the state and na- tion. The 1990s are expected to bring continued increases in enrollment, ex- pansion and improvements in campus facilities, and outstanding leadership by the college ' s administration, facul- ty and staff. On July 1 Copiah-Lincoln Junior College became Copiah-Lincoln Com- munity College. Mrs. George models her regulation gym shorts she wore while a student at Co-Lin. Nov. 27, 1988 Dear Trillium Staff: These are my reflections about a point in time and a special place. The Co-Lin campus dur- ing the years of 1935-37 was many things to me. It was a home with many girls, a dean, and a nurse; it was the very reality of a way to a career and financial independence. The teachers were skilled in their respective disciplines, and the campus was subject to efforts by the administra- tion to help young people take advantage of planned activities for personal growth. The campus was quiet every day. no students kept cars on campus, and there were no radios in dormitory rooms. Study time was from 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m., Monday - Friday. The boys could come and sit in the girls ' dorm lobby if they had dates, and there were always chaperones. During this very special time, when the col- lege was in its first decade, Co-Lin was the very best place to be. There were rumors of war in Eu- rope, and teachers tried to prepare us for life in a war-torn world. Co-Lin gave us strength of char- acter. Thank you Co-Lin. Sincerely, Jodie Kyzar Qreer George f Thomas Kelly, class of 1942, is a former alumnus of the year v. resides in Jackson. Nov., I98f Dear Trillium Staff: I spent six of my school years at Co-Lin High School and Junior Col lege. I was a high school cheerleader for two years and played on th high school basketball team two years. Residing in Beauregard and commuting to Co-Lin by walking or rid ing the school bus, I was classified as a local student and shared « large room, lockers, and bathroom in the basement of one of the olde classroom buildings. I was one of the more fortunate students as I had a job cleanint the local rooms twice each week and received $6.22 per month. I wa: also fortunate to have a summer job with the national Youth Adminis tration building the athletic field house for which 1 received $12.22 pel month. My six years at Co-Lin turned out to be one of the most formativ periods of my life, and a time for which 1 am very grateful. Sincerely, Thomas B. Nov., 1988 Dear Trillium Staff: As a former Co-Lin student, I have many memories of the way things were on the campus between 1952 and 1954. All students had certain responsibilities at the school. The boys had to work one day a month on the farm milking cows, pulling corn, cutting wood, or fixing fences. Girls were assigned such tasks as serving food in the cafeteria, and lights had to be out in all the dormitories at 10 p.m. There were very few cars on campus, and students had to turn their keys in. They couldn ' t get them back until they were leaving campus on Friday. More people stayed on the campus during week- ends, and buses would carry students to the churches they wanted to attend. 1 attended Co-Lin on a basketball scholarship. We usually played our games on Friday and Saturday nights. If we had games at another school, we would spend the night on Friday and travel to the next game on Saturday. Many times we would spend the night and then return home the next day. These are only a few reflections on campus life during the 1950s. Sincerely, Dr. Billy B. Thames Nov. 26, 1988 Dear Trillium Staff: My years at Copiah-Lincoln Junior College were very re- warding indeed. From the fall of 1976 until the spring of 1978, I received an outstanding education from excellent faculty. These instructors always had ' time ' ' to share with me whenev- er I needed it. The size of Co-Lin brought the teacher student ratio down to a very personal level that made for an environ- ment of intense and successful learning. Without naming any- one here, 1 can honestly say that several instructors at Co-Lin had a dramatic influence on my career as well as my character. Those years meant a lot to me. While attending Co-Lin, I was honored to be a part of Phi Theta Kappa. This organization was truly an inspiration to me both intellectually and socially. Other activities and events also served to round out my tenure and make.it fun to attend school in Wesson. 1 know there were many events and people associated with Co-Lin that time has forgotten, but one thing remains clear,- If I could do it over I would not change the script! There are also those who are new faces on the block ' those that need a little nurturing. It ' s actually a nice balance between the two. The vets are wonderful teachers for those who ask ques- tions such as Why do I have to fill out a purchase order to buy this equipment? The rookies are, on the other hand, great at suggesting short cuts to filling out a purchase order. All in all, the mixture of the two provides a college staff that works to make Co- Lin the only place to be. f-Business instructor Alita Myers joined the Co-Lin family this fall. Hav- ing moved here from California, she has brought many innovative ideas along with her. t You ' ve got to have a lot of energy to work for a community college ... a lot of spunk, says Harriet Vickers who began her job as director of public in- formation this year. We hope that the 1988-89 Trillium has captured the highlights of this year as well as years past. There are many people we would like to thank who have contributed to the yearbook ' s completion. We especially thank Miss Harriet Vickers for her time, patience, and dedication, as she spent many hours typing and writing copy. We also would like to thank the yearbook staff and Mr. Don Jackson for his time and effort in taking pictures for us. Moreover, thanks goes out to the students, administration, faculty, and staff for giving us a great subject to write about and capture on film.
