The committee found thot mony of the The Stotue of Liberty is the most compelling symbol in oll Americo She hos welcomed millions of immigronts to Americo's shores, giving the sight to o new ond better life The 154 foot toll structure, locoted on Ellis lslond in New York l-lorbor, wos given to the United Stores by Fronce in 1886. In observonce of liberty's centenntiol birthdoy celebrotion, Americo is plonning o tremendous potty to be held July 4, 1986, where Lody Liberty will go into the porty with o new look following o 5265 million foce lift. Highlighting the birthdoy porty will be the lighting of the Lody's torch, removed July 4, 1984, but which hodn't burned since 1916 when the torch wos first closed to the public. The torch thot will be lit on July 4 will not be the some torch thot wos originolly put on the stotue in 1886, but it will be on exoct replico, neorly perfectly shoped ond detoiled. The Stotue of Liberty's renovotion project is by for the worlds lorgest free stonding scoffolding project in modern history.
