HoIley's Comet possed through our skies in the spring of 1986, the first time since 1910. l-lolIey's Comet is nomed ofter the English ostronomer Edmond Holley, C1656-1742.5 Holley believed thot comets troveled in definite poths He figured out thot the poths mode by comets sighted in 1456, 1581, ond 1682, Holley then predicted thot the comet would reoppeor in 1759, ond he wos right. HolIey's comet oppeors every 76-79 yeors. Holley's comet is believed to hove been first seen before the yeor 240 l3.C, For centuries, people believed the coming of o comet would bring disoster, such os wot or on epidemic. However, o collision between the eorth ond o comet's nucleus could be very destructive. The odds for the eorth octuolly colliding with o comet ore one in o million yeors. Comets resemble fuzzy stors ond hove o nucleus which resembles o dirty snowboll. The nucleus is mode of frozen gosses ond ice mixed with dust. The nucleus is then surrounded by o hozy cloud known os o como. Comets get light from the sun. The brightness of o comet results portly from sunlight reflected by its nucleus ond como. A lot is still left to be leorned obout comets, However, o lot of useful, importont doto wos gothered in the 1986 possing of Holley's Comet. Holley's Comet will not come within seeing distonce of the eorth ogoin until the yeor 2062, Hopefully, you didn't miss out on seeing Holley's Comet, After oil, Holley's Comet only comes through Once in 0 life time.
