Through its doors have passed thousands of young men and women. Through the lean years of its humble beginnings, the depression years, the war years when many students did not return home, the rebuilding years, and through the years of continued growth, Co-Lin has survived. Students have gone on to become nationally-known in many fields, well-known in state politics, business, industry, education, and in other areas. Smith Acting President 11943-19451 Since its beginning in 1928, five men have served as President of Copiah-Lincoln Junior College. L. Russell Ellzey who was serving as superintendent of the agricultural high school was named first president of the iunior college division. He was elected to the United States Congress in 1932 and resigned. James M.Ewing, who was assistant superintendent, dean and registrar, coach and agriculture teacher, was named presi- dent on March 18, 1932. He served until January 22, 1943, when he was granted o military leave. Willie H. Smith was named acting president from then until October 10, 1945, at which time Dr. Ewing returned to serve as president until August 1956. He was chosen as president of Delta State University and F. M. Fortenberry, who had served as teacher, coach, athletic director, and dean of men, was elected in his place. Fortenberry, who was instrumental in adding vocational-technical programs, resigned October 26, 1967, to become supervisor for the Mississippi Public Junior Colleges. Dr. Billy B. Thames was unanimously chosen and began his term as Copiah-Lincoln's fifth president on January 20, 1968. Aware of the bright future awaiting Mississippi junior colleges, Copiah-Lincoln began a ten-year program of expansion, adding eleven new buildings, additional recreational and athletic facilities, and making maior renovations in existing buildings. In the fall of 1972 the Natchez campus of Copiah-Lincoln was es- tablished. Co-Lin's future continues to be bright under Dr. Thames' leadership. .Tx .P,,.---v-1- James Milton Ewing 11932-19561 Ts! is sf ' 1 9-f-' ' Francis Marion Fortenberry 11956-19681 wax YF :g ,ws ,4-.Jlli qi I if I mv or .SX V mga' ,va:'fJBf xx , -N , , Q.-lacf ada-arp' . .
