It was a happy time for families, friends and, mostof all, the crew, who had missed America ' s Finest City for the past six months...! LTJG Vandiver delivers the invocation EN3 Lozier aboard Ocean Lord 21, ready to take the memorable snapshots. On 14 February 1988, approximately 60 NM from where the original USS Samuel B. Roberts sank in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, on 24 October 1944, USS Copeland took part in a Memorial Ceremony to honor the fallen heroes of the Destroyer Escort that fought like a Battleship commanded back then by LCDR Robert W. Copeland. On board Copeland, while the Memorial Service was being held, LTJG Kevin O ' Donnell picked at random from a list of names and EN3 Robert Lozier flew in USS Gary ' s Ocean Lord 21 over the spot where the Sammy B. sank to drop a plaque honoring those who gave their lives.
