Sweltering, hu- mid heat caused sweat to slowly drip down our face. Gut hair hung limply, our clothes rivers permeated with deoderant and perspiration and then we walk into the classroom. Air-conditioned rooms seemed close to paradise. When de- ciding who would drive to lunch, most students asked the question, Do you have air conditioning? There is an additional class added to the Copan School system-the preschoolers. It is taught by Genia Castell, and she is aided by Mrs. Sutterfield. They had approxiama- tely twenty kids in the new class. These changes and many more contributed to our yearbook theme Back to the Drawing Board! Finally when Mother Nature lowered the thermostat in late Sep- tember and early October, it was onceiagain time for the Tulsa State Fair to arrive. Groups of -students flocked to the fairgrounds to stroll the midway, ride a few rides, and take in some of the many exhibits. Some jackets were even pulled out of the closets to watch things like the tractor pulls or the dirt track races when the sun went down. Many changes took place over the summer. We got some new teachers in the high school and the grade school. Toby Moreland moved up to Superintendent and Val Cole- man moved up to Vice-Principal. In the grade school, Betsy Graham is the new Principal. Sf' x. .X Q gqupnnn4Ulll r of xxwmmn .sf-I Sophomores, Mindi Haddock, Robin Brower and Kim Ashlock go Back to the drawing board. C7Jl4f5 MOVSS Only twelve years ago seniors started to first grade with their Lad- die pencils and Big Chief tablets. All they had to worry about was what to play next, how to tell the difference between b and d , and why silent e made the vowel preceding it long. Grade school was one of the best times. Most lifelong friends were made there. These are the times students will always remember. They will never forget those teachers that were a John King - football 1,2,3,4, - baseball 2,3,4p basketball 1, Band 1,2,3,4 l Renee Chinn - PHA 1,45 FHA Secretary 4, Basketball 1,2p Class Officer 15 Honor Roll 1,2,3,4g Business Achievement Award 3, Kim Brown LaRonda Bates - FHA 2,3,4g FHA Secretary 35 PHA President 4, Student Council Vice- President 4g Basketball 1, Track 1,2. 8 part of their primary life. Later, just when they thought they were on the top in the big, bad sixth grade they found out it was time to make another adjustment, junior high school. This turned out to be different from elementary school. Then again, these same students entered ninth grade as the top class of junior high. For some, this was their most memorable year. For others, it wasn't all that favorable. Again it was time to move on, but this time it was to high school, the best times of our lives! For some it would be their last three years of school, while others decide to go on to college. When asked what he thought about his senior year, Troy Edwards was quoted as saying, Football is great but Mac- can take a hike. Kim Jackson was quoted as saying, I like being a senior alot better than being a junior. ' .tzil fl f 1,95 7 - V '. Practicing for hours on end, shed- ding tears, working toward their goals while striving to be the very best they could be, many juniors were striving for excellence in all activities in which the participated. It's your car, so be careful. Don't speed or drive like a maniac. The insurance card is in the glove box, if needed, which it shouldn't be. Come home right after school. You have a full tank of gas! Don't cruise at lunch, ride with someone else or walk. Now get off to school so you won't be late. Be care- ful, just remember it's your car now, so it's your responsibility . . . Many sophomores found this to be true when they en- countered the first car experience. This was the time when Mommy and Daddy claimed the car was all yours, but the new driver found that quite often there were many rules attached, to the responsibility of owning a car. A new sophomore driver was usually spotted at lunch as the one who was out of the parking lot before anyone else was in their car or the first one running down the hall, eager to feel the power of being behind the wheel. One's first experience of driving wasn't always pleasant. Paranoia sometimes set in and accidents did happen, but altogether everything went pretty well. . , ft QW f , . Although the younger kids look up to you and you get to go downtown for lunch, there are some disadvantages such as having more homework, taking tests day after day, and having the upper classmen still look down on you. The fresh- men are almost there and are earning their spot on the totem pole. Somewhere down inside, though, every- one knew deep in their hearts they were watching and waiting for the freshman to forget or mess up so they could exercise their authoratative rule yet it was a time of experiencing challenges. It gave them a chance to mature and prepare mentally and emotionally for the years to come. However, these young men learned the mean- ing of the word DEDICATION. It's easy for a team with a winning record to go practice every day of the week. But for a team that at one point was 0-8, the fun was gone. All they had left was to play for pride. In the last two games of the year, the dedication paid off. After a win- less start the Hornets pulled to- gether to score big wins over Dela- ware and Bluejacket. The Hornets ended the season with a record of 2 wins and 8 losses. However, num- bers aren't always important. A winner is someone that keeps on trying no matter how dim the re- sults look. He is someone that nev- er gives up, not even after the last buzzer has sounded. He has to have the ability to find the good things rather than just the bad. The responsibility of keeping his teammates, as well as himself, fired up and thinking positive falls on Back Row Left to Right: Coach Davis, Danny Lemmons, Billy Ketchum, Stacy Martin, Bobby Herring Herring, and jerry Fox. Middle Row: manager Brent Pryor, Keith Martin, john King, Dwayne Bryan, Troy Edwards, james Cates, Leon jackson, Coach Harris, Coach Martinez. Front Row: Chris Forrest, Harm Dunlap, Jason Davis, Brian Mangan, Shaun Long, Buzz Eddy. teitler 60 tru fib W7 Cf! 1575 WJJVSY his shoulders. A winner must not forget his mistakes, but must ex- cept them and learn from them, making himself better. The best example of a group of winners that I have ever seen is that high school football team. Even though they won only two ball games on the scoreboard this year, 1 they won them all in their hearts. The discouragement, humiliation and exhaustion of losing, at certain times lowered their spirits, but was at no point in time strong enough to kill their desire to win. Not be- cause they are asked not to give up, but because they realize it is their duty to their teammates, coach, school and most importantly, to themselves. This group of guys didn't ask for things such as a state champion- ship or even the district champion- ship. They only asked that they may walk tall and proud, and that when they are talked about years later that they may be given the well deserved title of winners. They showed pride and spirit in their team and played the best of their abilities. When asked what did he enjoy most about playing the sport, Ran- dy Evans replied, The fact that whether or not you get along with someone in every day life, you are great friends on the field, and the fact you get to meet new people. We also asked the junior high team, What was your biggest dis- appointment during the year? Al- most all of them replied, When we got beat by Barnsdall, a fairly easy team. In the season opener, the game was a tough 6-0 defeat. After this loss the team was determined to make the year a total sucess. In the next game, the jr. high foot- ball team traveled to Dewey to play their 7th and Sth grade. With deter- mination and hard work Copan beat the Bulldoggers 22-8. On September 24, the jr. high played Oilton here. They showed us they had the skill, and confi- dence to follow-up that victory. They beat Oilton 28-6. On October 2, the jr. high played South Coffeyville here and the Hornets had an excellent ballgame. They won with a 38-20 victory. In the next outting the Hornets showed us much determination and confidence as ever, and beat Shidler. On October 15, they were to play Welch, always a tough team. The Hornets were leading the opposi- tion 6-0 until the third quarter when Welch ran in for a touch- down. Things were beginning to be really tense. The Hornets were on the 4 yard line with only 4 seconds left on the game clock. It looked like an ulitmate overtime but the team came through with another victory. The Hornets next opponent was Lenapah. The Eagles are usually a real tough team but they proved to be no competition to the Hornets. They defeated the Eagles 32-14 at their home field. The last football game of the sea- son matched the Copan Hornets against Welch. They all expected a tight and close game as the time before but the Hornets game away the victors 27-12. WHAT A SEASON! You should watch these fine group of guys. Rene Blom 5092716241313 55,4444 H945 Softball returned to Copan this year and the new team with the new coach turned in a winning re- cord. The Lady Hornets posted a 12-9 record before losing in the fin- als of district play to Barnsdall. Copan opened the season by going to Dewey to play the defending 3A state champions. In the first games, nerves, inexperience and Dewey pitching took their toll and Copan lost 8-O. ln the second game of the doubleheader the Lady Hornets held Dewey scoreless until the bot- tom of the fourth. But the bubble burst and with one swing of the bat Dewey scored 3 runs to win. Al- though the Lady's lost the game many of the players felt that this was the best game of the year. Copan rebounded after the two losses to Dewey to win 4 straight games from Caney Valley and Barnsdall. Their record stood at 4-2. However, the winning streak ended at the hands of Barnsdall in a hard- fought 6-5 loss. Triples by Laurie Yearout and Shannon Sousa proved to be the high points of the game. But the Lady's stayed above the .500 mark by taking the second game 4- 1. In the next doubleheader Copan split with Wynona to push their record to 6-4. Things looked better when Copan took two more games from Caney Valley by scores of 5-3 in both games. Kathy Chinn blasted a home run for the winners and San- dra Hinkle and Carol Gilliland had two hits each. After extending their record to 8-4 the Lady Hornets squared off against the B'ville IV. They dropped two games, 7-6 and 9-2 and their record fell to 8-6. Next week, Copan's Softball Hor- nets traveled to B'ville looking for revenge. But in the first game B'ville bombed Copan 9-1. Howev- er, in the second game that after- noon Sandra Hinkle played her best game of the year and the Lady Hornets beat B'ville 2-1. Copan took two games from Wyn- ona later in the week to run their record to 11-7. However, a regular season finale with Dewey dropped the record to 11-8. The district tournament was a week away and confidence was building. As Liz Kraft said, We thought that we could do it. We wanted to win. In the first game of the district tournament the Lady Hornets blew Hominy out of the dugout 12-O. This set up the finale with Barns- dall, one more time. The Lady Hornets played as a team and played their best game of the year. But they fell short, 7-3. Laurie Yearout sums it up, We really pulled things together and gave it our best shot even though,we lost. The 1985-86 Lady Hornet softball ended with a 12-9 record. But thoughts of next year pushed their way into player thoughts. When asked what they were looking for- ward to next year, the chant was already beginning, Take State! makings. V Qs i. When someone goes out for a sport you have the determination to do the best you can. Some are even recognized for it. The 1985-86 Baseball team has spent a lot of time and hard work practicing for their games. At the beginning of the season several games had been canceled and some were rescheduled due to the rain. So extra time and more hard work was put in when a game was canceled. The Baseball team went to Districts April 18, which was scheduled at Len- apah, but was played here because of the rain. They won Districts against Foyil, 14-4, which led them to play Lenapah with a win of 7-5. They went on to Regionals and lost to Fairfax and Oilton. Through the soreness, black eyes, and knots on the head, the boys have had a pretty successful team this year, ex- cluding the rainy season they had. But by the time Baseball season comes around next year, they'll be raring to go. We took a poll in the fourth grade. Their favorite movie was Back To The Future. Their song was Money for Nothing. The color blue seemed to be the most liked color and a Z28 was the decision they made for their favor- ite car. They decided that they en- joyed the sports, football and soc- cer the most. When asked what they wanted to be when they grew up, their replies were a vet, a doctor, a teacher, and a rancher. If these young children could be anyone else in the world, the girls would like to be either Mae West, Crystal Gail, or Cindi Lauperg the boys would like to be either Bill Cosby or Chuck Norris. If some fourth graders were to become President, they would change quite a few things. First of all, they would not make citizens pay taxes or bills. School would be only 3 hours long and students would get paid for going. Oh yeah, one more thing, they would not have any speed limits. Fourth grade for President! When you are in the third grade, you are a girl, and you are told you could be anyone you wanted you might say Supergirl or your mom, but if you were a boy, you might say Ronald Reagan or Cindi Lauper's body guard. We also found we might be in trouble if these youngsters were President of the U.S. Comments made were to raise the speed limit, have no work in school, and be able to drive a car at any age. We do have some hope though because others said there would be no wars, no payments on long distance phone calls, and lower taxes. We'll all find out in about fifteen years. She said she'd help me first. I forgot to put any film in the camera. What do you want me to do? Throughout the year, many cries of an- ger, despair, joy, and excitement were heard coming from Ms. Morris' annual class. Thirteen students and one teacher were locked in a small room with 120 pages to fill that were to eventually be- come the 1986 Copan annual. Our fearless, young Qalthough now gray- hairedj leader, Ms. Morris waded through piles of pamphlets and direc- tor's guides in an attempt to guide this adventuresome staff. Terri Rippy lead the way for the group as our editor. Busi- ness Manager, Melissa Werts kept all our records straight and made sure that we didn't bankrupt ourselves. Kelly Summers, Shannon Sousa, Tami Lind- sey, Tobbi Mitchell, Lori Hollands- worth, Rene Blom, Tanya Moody and Rachel Rahn provided the page designs. Celeste Barnett added the copy for many pages. Kevin Dahl and Liz Kraft did all the legwork and provided the staff with these awesome photographs. Now, the final product is here. This is a book produced by the students for the students.
