This floor design, a gift of the Class of 1959, is intended to convey these meanings: The large green 'C” with a white background, of course, stands for Coopersville and the school colors. The bronze lamp of knowledge emblem at the top represents the things above all others for which the school stands, that is knowledge, learning and scholarship. School, state, national and world citizenship are represented by the seal of the State of Michigan, on the left. On the right is the scales of justice denoting the moral, ethical and religious standards that students should receive in high school. A healthy body must be the basis of mental, citizenship, and moral training. Thus the laurel wreath at the bottom stands for physical educa- tion, athletics and sportsmanship. The irregular shape of the whole figure denotes the various aspects of curricular and extra-curricular activities in which a student may participate. The lines radiating from the center through various shades of terrazzo in- dicate the different directions students take following graduation. “Broncos Table of Contents — Hammers 12 — Nuts 39 omores — Screwdrivers 47 Freshmen — Nails 55 Sports — Powerdrills 67 Teachers — Builders Organizatioi Advertisii Homecoming 1986 7 e 9Z7 gf 64tt4- C4 tU $ (?ount 1986 Miniature King and Queen Grand Marshall Caitlyn Bennink and T. The week of October 3, started off with the selling of Kool-Aid, ice cream cones, and penny candy during lunch hours. Activities included everything from a jumprope contest to pinning the tail on the Bronco. Monday students carried baby bottles around. Other days ranged from favorite toy day, children's storybook day, P.J. day to the traditional Green-n- White Day. Everyone worked hard throughout the week decorating the halls and the lobby, “Can- dyland. The Class of '89 won first for their “Wizard of Oz“ hall; the seniors followed with a close 2nd place; all the decorations looked extremely creative. Friday’s assembly, with the performance of the class skits, brought lots of laughs to the students and teachers. The pie-in-the-face was quite a tasty event. The seniors enjoyed the honor of first place, but the juniors enjoyed the privilege of smothering them with pie. The seniors received the most class points overall during the week. The help and cooperation of all the teachers, staff, and students made this week one filled with pleasant memories.' 1986 Court Dottie Wilder and Rick Finkler Sheila Fritz and Chuck Pearce Rita McNitt and Matt Biermacher Sheila Rasch and Rob Anderson Diane (Jmlor and Dave Zimmer 8 Homecoming 1985 Homecoming King and Queen Tracy Klein and John Diendorf Ti tuf TOe Ti ene 1986-87 Exchange Students Jenny Lundh — Sweden, Peter Sinnemann — Germany, Katharina Hauser — Germany. Each class has similarities, but each class is also unique. The Class of 87 has distinguished itself by surpassing the accomplishments of previous classes. The positive influence of this class will be evident after graduation. Throughout your high school tenure, the Class of 87 has been very involved in activities, student government, athletics and academics. School life has been the focal point for this class and with progression through school, leadership became more evident. The involvement and participation of the Class of 87 has served as an example to other classes and your conscious pursuit of making CHS a better place has been constructive and positive for all Your record of contributions and accomplishments speaks for itself You are to be congratulated for setting the standards for others to attain. Thank you for adding so much to your school. Continue to show the interest, initiative and spirit you have demonstrated as you pursue your own individual goals. Best wishes for success and happiness. THE FEARFUL FRESHMEN Remember that first day of disoriented confusion? Who were we? Why were we here? Was it safe to eat in the cafeteria? Did Mr. Goosen really used to be a Central American dictator? These questions raced through our heads as we kicked butt at our first-ever pep assembly and found out how the detention system worked. Shall we mention our 0-9 football season? Naw! But we were now experienced enough with this freshman stuff and ready to move on to... Slhool had a lot of wrestling, student council, junior play, etc. Wt juniors could take a SENIOR SYNDROME We had nothing to prove to anyone anymore, except ourselves. Our Powder Puff team did not just win once but twice as they demolished the juniors. The varsity football team had a lot of emotion and devotion, too, having a winning season for the second straight year. After we honored our King, Rick Finkler, and Queen, Sheila Fritz, at Homecoming, we felt an ending to what was happening coming nearer and nearer. For most of the season, our seniors — Troy Spencer, Doug Wilson, Paul TenEyck, Brian Smith and Fredrik Delsinger — were five of the six varsity match players. They played very well throughout the season and will be sorely missed. «- % Juniors — Mike Stream and Steve Jager, both var- sity letter-winners, will be called upon to lead the team next year. The other four varsity positions will be up for the taking by juniors Mike Smith, and Chad Jones, sophomore Mark Williams, Fteshmen Carl Neff, Chris Fuller, Tony Caruso, John Hillary nd Scott Budzinski. Golf was invented to wreak havoc upon ego and self-confidence. Our team learned this lesson well, but for the most part, overcame the disappointments of out-of-bounds tee-shots and three and four-putts and played up to their ability. A great lift to the team was our Swedish foreign ex- change student, Fredrik Delsinger. He was our most consistent varsity scorer at the end aj1 the season and received Honorable Mention All-Conference recogni- tion. Biology I Science Science courses offered at C.H.S. are aimed at accomplishing one of two goals: t) provide graduating students with sufficient ex- periences to deal with the science concepts, terminology, and technology of everyday life; 2) provide the fundamentals of science for fur- ther study in college, vocational school, etc. Our teachers are experienced and qualified in their subject areas. They have demonstrated a willingness to continue their own training in an effort to always improve as teachers of science. Nothing is more intriguing than the adven- ture of learning about life and its processes and the materials, mechanics, and energy flow of the physical universe. The Science Depart- ment is proud to offer our students a challeng- ing beginning of a never-ending quest for knowledge and understanding of themselves and their environment. We have recently added to our computer course offerings with a Literacy course and an Advanced Programming course. We feel that students who study four years of academic math ending with the senior math course are well prepared to study college level mathematics. James Trowbridge Chairman Cart Kern me AB. Intro, to Physics History The primary concern of the Social Studies department has always been to provide the student with as wide a selec- tion as possible that will meet the needs of each student. In keeping with this goal, each course is re-evaluated each year and steps taken to improve it where needed. Such a course as Survey of Great Lakes has been added to meet these needs. Other courses have been dropped where either low demand or problems develop. Each teacher in the department is dedicated to the principle of improving the quality education each student receives. As such this proves to be the greatest asset of this department — the caring of the teachers. Nathan Burnell Chairman I Ken Boettner B.A., W.M.U.. Political Science. G.S. History. Social Science Faculty 127 English Jake Butman M.A.. CJ. of M., American History, American Literature The English department strives diligently to help prepare students for any occupation or activity he she might choose upon graduation. College-bound scholars are well- equipped and often achieve basic course credits without matriculation and advance placement; this speaks well of their CHS English background. Graduates who opt for the world of business secure good positions if they have carefully pur- sued their English studies. People are frequently judged by their use of the English language, both oral and writ- ten. The department stresses both and is tremendously proud of its record of successes. Jack Boeskool Chairman 128 Faculty Athletic Dept Spec. Ed. The Special Education Department is available to assist students who have exhibited a history of learning pro- blems. A team gathers information on each student and makes a determina- tion of eligibility according to State Law. The department seeks to place students in the least restrictive en- vironment. Through staff coopera- tion. students are given support in order to receive credits necessary for graduation. The department also seeks to individualize instruction whenever appropriate as indicated by an in- dividual education plan. At present, there are seventeen students receiving special services either through a special class or through a teacher con- sultant who works with students out of regular classes. Thomas Marchinowski Chairman The Athletic Program at Coopersville High School is an up- ward swing.
