EXCELLENCE AWARDS The annual Awards for Excellence honor exceptional seniors. They also encourage underclassmen to better efforts. Awards may be bestowed in any of twelve areas: Academics, Art, Business Education, English, Home Economics, Industrial Arts, Instrumental Music, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Vo-Agriculture, and Vocal Music. The criteria for consideration differ among the departments. In general, however, certain conditions must be met. First a student must have a major in the subject. He must have an overall grade point average of 5.5 (C + ). A high interest level, as evidenced by some form of out-of- class work, is important. Nominations must be approved by two-thirds of the department making the nomination and then be reviewed by an advisory committee. Since their conception six years ago, the Excellence Awards have become an integral part of school life and are a coveted reward for four years’ striving. EXCHANGE STUDENT MARLI BRANCO BRAZIL Arriving at the beginning of the second semester, 1 8-year old MARLI BRANCO traveled from Goa ;ala, Santa Cantarina, Brazil, to reside with the Marvin Roskamp Family. She left behind at home her family of four brothers and two sisters as well as her parents who manufacture farm equipment and other products. With Portuguese as her native language, Marti required some time to become adjusted to the classes and routine. After a few days she decided she did like American music but not algebra. Back home bowling and swimming were favorite recreations. She now looks forward to swimming in Lake Michigan this summer. Upon her arrival in the States, an abundance of snow was a shocking surprise and she enjoyed frolicking in the snow and riding the snowmobile. Once again we are fortunate to welcome a member of the Youth For Understanding. This program gives mutual growth to understanding the varying cultures. By her warmth and friendliness, Marli has endeared herself to all at CHS. Exchange Student 17
