It is a little bigger and busier than Coopersville. You can see hills around Kuopio. A large beautiful lake with thousands of tiny islands lies close by the town. There are several tough soccer teams in Kuopio, but nobody plays football. Kuopio is an ideal place for any kind of winter sports. Buses and trains play a big role in the public traffic. People eat black bread and drink sour milk. In general, life here in Michigan is similar to life back in Finland. There are some differences, but this exchange program helps everyone learn more: our two countries and life in general do have much in common. 16 Exchange Student EXCHANGE STUDENT MARLI BRANCO BRAZIL Arriving at the beginning of the second semester, 1 8-year old MARLI BRANCO traveled from Goa ;ala, Santa Cantarina, Brazil, to reside with the Marvin Roskamp Family. She left behind at home her family of four brothers and two sisters as well as her parents who manufacture farm equipment and other products. With Portuguese as her native language, Marti required some time to become adjusted to the classes and routine. After a few days she decided she did like American music but not algebra. Back home bowling and swimming were favorite recreations. She now looks forward to swimming in Lake Michigan this summer. Upon her arrival in the States, an abundance of snow was a shocking surprise and she enjoyed frolicking in the snow and riding the snowmobile. Once again we are fortunate to welcome a member of the Youth For Understanding. This program gives mutual growth to understanding the varying cultures. By her warmth and friendliness, Marli has endeared herself to all at CHS. Exchange Student 17 EXCELLENCE AWARDS The annual Awards for Excellence honor exceptional seniors. They also encourage underclassmen to better efforts. Awards may be bestowed in any of twelve areas: Academics, Art, Business Education, English, Home Economics, Industrial Arts, Instrumental Music, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Vo-Agriculture, and Vocal Music. The criteria for consideration differ among the departments. In general, however, certain conditions must be met. First a student must have a major in the subject. He must have an overall grade point average of 5.5 (C + ). A high interest level, as evidenced by some form of out-of- class work, is important. Nominations must be approved by two-thirds of the department making the nomination and then be reviewed by an advisory committee. Since their conception six years ago, the Excellence Awards have become an integral part of school life and are a coveted reward for four years’ striving. Family Leader of Tomorrow Award NANCY NOTTINGHAM The Family Leader of Tomorrow Award is presented for commendable performance in an examination of family life knowledge and attitude. To take the test, a student must be a senior. He or she need not have taken any home economics classes. The examination has a broad range of questions covering many facets of modern living. Thursday halls were trimmed for Decorate the Halls Day — juniors won again. The pep assembly Friday carried through the hillbilly motif of the day. Spirit mounted day by day for Friday's game and dance. Homecoming 125 HOMECOMING NIGHT At five o'clock on o windy Friday afternoon six floats were lined up by the school. By six, with the band leading, the parade had begun. The Broncos met the Cedar Springs' team on the gridiron at seven-thirty, kicking off the 1976 Homecoming game. Highlight of the half-time was the crowning of the new royalty. Barb Lillie and Ross Michael. The band's special show followed. At nine o'clock the dance began. After witnessing a satisfying 6-0 victory over the Red Hawks, fans were eager to celebrate. Featured was the band Petal Fall. Decorations were in keeping with the theme, 200 Years . . . Aside from the feeling of pride and the sense of accon accompanies such an honor, remember that the season holds yet a deeper meaning. Many efforts on the part of many people went into this season, not the least of which was your own dedication and sacrifice in season as well as out. May your success serve as a reminder to you throughout life that we can do whatever we BELIEVE we can do, and that the only real limitations that keep us from achieving our goals are those that we impose upon ourselves. I’m sure we will remember some of our matches as individuals and will relive those moments when we tell others about them. We will also remember the senior wrestlers — Dan Noel, Duane Watson, Tony Klein, Jeff Mengel, and Duncan DeMull and the matches they won for our team. To the returning and new wrestlers this year's goal is now past. Look forward to the next season and be ready for the command Wrestle!
