Text from Pages 1 - 208 of the 1972 volume:

Each of us has his own meaningful goals. Our seals are the substance for which we live. Some are large, some are small, but every one is equally as importan! as the other. At this point it is perhaps, hard to see the values of our goals in high school in relation to those we must acquire in the outside world. The values are there, however, and probably will remain hidden until il ey are needed later-that is. when our seemingly small goals help us to de- velop our more meaningful goals. Superintendent, and Mrs. Joan Randall. Curriculum Director—still strive to run our school in a cool, ef- ficient manner. They are to be thanked for all of their diligence and guidance. Mrs Joan Randall, curriculum director. 14 Mr. Clarence Mason, superintendent. Mr. Stanley Kitch. principal. PRINCIPALS Mr. Stanley Kitch, Principal, and Mr. Edward Kilpatrick, Assistant Principal have become more and more efficient in their running of the high school. Many significant advances have occured in this past year that are much appreciated. Edward Kilpatrick, assistant principal. 1) Mr. John Lh Duke: counselor. GUIDANCE--THE COUNSELORS’ WAY OF LIFE. We feel proud at C.H.S. to have available two fine people who work diligently to help students realize their future in education. Their guidance and under- standing are much appreciated. Mr. Thomas Kalahcr counselor. SCIENCE SURROUNDS US Mr. Verlyn Eisenhauer: biology Since science is an important part of every- one’s life, our science department's chief pro- ject is to help students understand what is ac- tually involved in everything that goes on around us. We commend this department for being able to explain scientific concepts with Mr. Earl Holmes: chemistry, physics. Mr. David Mutchler. health science, algebra. 17 Mr. Donald Paton: basic business. U.S. history, government, economics. Mr. Russell Conran: government, geography. SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT STIMULATES SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY. The social studies department is continually improving its curriculum in its dedication to keep students socially informed. Each course in itself can be considered valuable and fulfill- ing as any part of one’s education. Mr. |oseph Miller: psychology, current history. U.S. history. 1 20 Mr. |ohn Haan: English. ENGLISH BECOMES MORE EXCITING Mr Norman Hofmeyer: English, novel short story, humanities. The English department has had a new look this year. The curriculum was restructured to stimulate variety and interest. Greek literature, humanities, poetry drama, and novel short story are the new courses which are offered. The comedy, Much Ado About Nothing , was the Stratford play which C.H.S. students at- tended this year. Mr. Max Schipper: English, biology. Mr. Zael Lutz: algebra, physics, college math. Zenith. I T' MATH DEPARTMENT TEACHES LOGIC AND Mr. fames Trowbridge: geometry, algebra, trigonometry, analytical geometry. Mr. Carl Kemme: advanced algebra, geometry. REASONING The mathematics department continues through another year of perhaps a tiresome, but educational world of theorems, laws, and equations. Some students took a math coordi- nation test which proved to be very helpful in understanding a student's potential. However long the year may seem in math, it still pro- vides irreplaceable knowledge that can be ap- plied in every facet of life. 23 Mr Charles Hollcman: algebra, earlh science, mechanical drawing Mr. Donald Snow: house construction. INDUSTRIAL AND VOCATIC Mrs. Mary Ann Momber: home economics. Mr William Cox: metals, mechanics. NAL DEPARTMENT The addition of new teachers as well as an array of new technical equipment has increased the function of the Industrial and Vocational Department. A por- table workshop has been incorporated in the build- ing of the administration complex by the house con- struction class. Plastics and electronics have been paired back to back as completely new and chal- lenging courses. The agricultural class has a new laboratory building for animal science projects. Home economics still functions as a basis for do- mestic knowledge. Mr. Bruce Vissers: mechanical drawing, metals. Mr. Roger Peacock: agriculture. BUSINESS EDUCATION ENABLES STUDENTS TO COMPETE IN SOCIETY The business department this year at CHS is maintaining and augmenting its program to provide students with knowledge in clerical, secretarial, and bookkeeping fields. Co-op training continues to be a vital part of the pro- gram with students attending classes before school. It is certain that this long established department will continue to turn out excellent business students for years to come. Mrs. Gayle VanDoom: typing. English. Miss Carolyn McNitt: business arithmetic, typing. 27 28 Mr. Robert DeGeus: art. VES FOR CULTURAL IDEAS The cultural enrichments offered this year en- abled students to get more acquainted with the many different worlds of fine arts. Our diligent band, not having the same text- books every year, of course but new music, looked forward to playing at the Grand Rapids Rotary Club for the first time. Also, since they had so many home games this year, the band was kept busy performing intricate routines for the intent onlookers. The hard-working Jazz Ensemble, appeared on the Buck Matthews Show this January. They were also hosts for the first annual Jazz Festival in Western Michigan, which was held in February. The choir also worked laboriously hard. They put on many concerts and outside en- gagements. The C’villaires had a busy sched- ule singing at many churches and numerous other places. Doing their own thing, the art students be- came new people and created fantastic designs and pictures. The relaxed atmosphere in the classroom aided students' concentration and work. 29 PHYSICAL EDUCATION The students who were involved in physical education this year learned, (among other things), how to do a push-up correctly, under the supervision of Mr. Vassalo and Miss Bouw- man. These students also learned lessons of sportsmanship and responsibility, which they will put to great use later in life. Miss Rose Bouwman: girls physical education SPECIAL CLASSES Mrs. Stella Sailers: assistant to the librarian. The library proved to be a great help to stu- dents by providing them with various informa- tion. The librarians, together with the A.V. club, and library assistants, kept this depart- ment running smoothly. This was also Mr. Marchinowski's first year as teacher of the spe- cial education department after the retirement of Mrs. Hubbel. Mr. Thomas Marchinowski: special education. French. Mr. Gary Arthur: librarian. 31 Head bookkeeper. Rita Dahl. Secretary to Mr. Mason. Agnes DeMeester. Secretaries: Angie Bleckley and Florence Philips. SECRETARIES’ PERSEVERENCE APPRECIATED Mrs. Philips and Mrs. Bleckley are the friendly and able personnel of the high school office. Miss Agnes DeMeester runs the Superintend- ent’s office in a firm, efficient manner, while Mrs. Dahl manages with preciseness and accu- racy. It would not be possible for the students, faculty or the administration to continue to achieve their goals without the help of these capable persons. CUSTODIAL STAFF The Coopersville High School custodial staff could be classified as our “unsung heroes. Though their jobs are not obvious to all. we should realize that they make Coopersville High a pleasant place in which to study. Whether it was a matter of a missing waste basket or a frigid classroom, no maintenance problem was too difficult for our expert custo- dians to solve. One of many daily chores is performed by Mr. Bos. L Yost. T. Marshall. D. Bos. R. Modderman. 33 It has been another year of successfully driv- ing through slush, snow, and rain for our faith- ful bus drivers. Mr. Ed Klein was appointed transportation director this year. His duties in- cluded safety, organization, and discipline. BUS DRIVERS AND MECHANICS Students line up for the ride home after a long day at school. FIRST ROW: E. Klicn. F. Bleckley. F. Beehce. F. SPECIAL EVENTS ’72 HOMECOMING THEME, NOSTALGIA The events leading up to Homecoming helped to peak the excitement and thrills of Home- coming night. The action started Tuesday with a pep rally and bonfire. Wednesday was crazy hat day and Thursday each class decorated their own halls. Friday climaxed the daytime events with cheering in the halls and a pep assembly. The Homecoming parade was beautiful and executed with expert timing, with many color- ful floats and the music of our own marching band. Perfect weather brought out good crowds for the parade and the game that night. The game was exciting, even though East Christian eventually went on to win, and the crowning of the queen at half time made it a night to remember. Newly crowned Homecoming queen, Rosemary Laug, is escorted around the footabU field as she begins her reign. Mr. Walters directs the jazz Knsemhle al the Homecoming dance. Diane Klein and Alan Rose! Pam Laug and Tom Posthumus Joni Fynewever and Gale Klein fm Francisco Tantaco The King and Queen lead the Homecoming dance. Underclassmen representatives: S. Elkins. |. Laug. T. Otterbein. M. Lillie. After they ended the futility in their lives, they were finally able to understand and accept their parents. It was a play which was very relevant to young and old alike, for each saw himself as one of the many characters in the play, said the director. The play takes on the Women's Liberation Movement and shows numerous antics of the war between the sexes. Beginning with the annual magazine sale, extra- curicular activities increased in number as time progressed. Among the many events were Home- coming week, numerous skits, plays, assemblies and dances, and band and choir concerts. A jazz band festival and a performance by the Honors Band were held in our gymnasium. The Detroit Lions also challenged the athletic members of our faculty to a basketball game this spring. We've Only Just Be- gun was the theme of the junion-senior prom, which was held once again at Ramona Terrace. These events were thoroughly enjoyed by the great number of students and other members of the com- munity who attended them. The Jeremiah People tell their message to the students. SENIORS Ky.m Laug. These awards indicate much more than just aca- demic achievement, although they certainly require that. In addition to grades however, the members of each department have considered what they felt to lie the characteristics of a truly excellent student. ACADEMIC: ENGLISH: Among these qualities are leadership, above aver- age interest, performance in class on a level which is outstanding, projects or studies beyond the regu- lar curriculum which show the ability to apply what has been learned, good citizenship, enthusiasm, and an interest in continuing studies in the curriculum area beyond high school. GOLFERS POST BEST SEASON EVER 1971 was the first year that the Michigan High School Athletic Association designated golf to be a fall sport. It was a year of surprises and good inter- est in the sport. The weather was good for most matches and the competition was good. The regular season started in a winning way. but as the schedule brought stiffer competition, frustra- tions mounted. However, with a 4-5-1 league record we came closest to a winning season in the history of golf at Coopersville High School. SCORES Coopersville V4 G. R. Con- squently, improvement became the number one goal. In this regard the Broncos were very success- ful. showing improvement week by week and fin- ishing the season very strongly. So were other teams as we were presented with quite a formidable schedule. But. of course, as in freshman football, the JV level provide the condi- tioning and experience necessary to generate a suc- cessful Varsity squad. Many games were close, going to the last few sec- onds. The Broncos were upset in the District Tour- nament ending their string of district champion- ships at two. They were usually on the short end of the score, but the experience they gained this year will help them to improve their record greatly next year. The Junior Varisity team fought to a 7-9 record this year. Their record does not show how strong this team was because not only were two games lost by just three points, but they beat Greenville in a very impressive game.
