Ever diligent in his attempts to improve and enrich the athletic deftartment. Mr. I assallo was known, even as basketball coach, for his tin-less efforts in behalf of those with whom he worked. . ow in his seven- teenth year of guiding C. . S. athletes and their notches through the rough seas of comjtetition. Mr. I assallo is still assiduous in his work, li e, the 965 Zenith staff, dedicate this, our yearbook, to Angelo l assalo — teacher, coach. Athletic Director, and friend. MK. ALLEN ROBINSON, SUPERINTENDENT Merely to jog along at the uninteresting and des- ultory pace is not the goal of our industrious super- intendent. Ever pursuing an elusive goddess. Ed- ucation, he is tireless in his efforts to enrich the lives of those to and for whom he is responsible — taxpayers, teachers, and students. Now in his seventeenth year as navigator of the Coopersville Public Schools, Allen G. Robinson con- tinues his dauntless efforts to produce the very best education possible for the youth of our community and its environs. Not always in an enviable position, he is some- times harassed by the voter whose opinions do not concur; beset by the weight of decisions both small and large; and burdened with the trivial things which in reality are not his responsibilities. Yet he dispenses his duties with concern and efficiency. To Allen G. Robinson, superintendent commend- able, we offer our congratulations for past achieve- ments and our best wishes for future efforts. 8 IU SSKI.I F. CONRAN. PRINCIPAL Because of the efforts of our industrious principal, Russell F. Conran, Coopersville High School is an excellent place to journey through school. A look at the innovations and accomplishments achieved under his competent guidance would indeed leave one keenly impressed. e are grateful to him for his concern, and we wish him continued success at the helm of our beloved alma mater. 10 Counselors JOHN LA DUKE Bachelor of Arts Western Michigan University Master of Arts University of Michigan Boys Counsellor ALICE SCOTT Bachelor of Arts Hope College Master of Arts University of Michigan Girls Counsellor 11 JARVIS WIGGERS Bachelor of Music Master of Music Michigan State University Music Theory Band Instrumental Ensembles J ACK BOESKOOL Bachelor of Arts Hope College English Vocal Music Vocal Ensembles Zenith Advisor Jf me Urtsi ROBERT DE GEUS Bachelor of Arts Michigan State University Art 12 EDWARD KILPATRICK bachelor of Art I.amor State College American History Physical education Athletics political HAROLD OLSEN Bachelor of Science St. Cloud College Geography History 13 Science THOMAS MILLER Bachelor of Arts Hope College (government American History arsity Club Sponsor Football CHARLES HOLLKMAN Bachelor of Arts Hope College Algebra General Math Physical Science Athletics Camera Club Sponsor ; r LYLE HAN Bachelor of Science If estern Michigan University Master of Arts University of Michigan Algebra Bachelor of Arts Cornell University Geometry Advanced Math Honor Society Sponsor Math Club Sponsor jflatfjematics Sciente VERLYN EISENHAUER Huc hei or of Art % Greenville College Biology Bilile Club Co-sponsor Science Club Sponsor CLIFFORD CARLSON liuchelor of Science Michigan State I niversity Science EARL HOLMES Bachelor of Arts Master of Arts West I irfginia I niversity Chemistry Physics Sophomore Co-sponsor IS Hanguage rta Bachelor W estern MichrffurJl English A, Latik Natiomnllon Society Sponsor Dramati f THOMAS KOOP Bachelor of Arts Calvin College French English ESTHER STREETER Buchelor of Arts ff estern Michigan University Master of Arts University of Michigan English Senior Class Sponsor Girls’ Basketball 16 DOLORES SHVFKR Hot hrlftr of iris Hope College Ktiglish Junior (iliiss (io-sponsor I VCOK IU SM W Hut helor ttf- 4rt 11 opr College Km 1 i 1 i I- orrnsir I Iraiuulic JR JAY YKLDM W Hue helor of Arts Hope College Kuglish Freshman Class Coupon Bihle IInl Co-sponsor Athletic CAROYLN BURGTORF Bachelor of Science Ferris State College Business Education Typing Sophomore Co-sponsor Pugin ess HAMILTON MCGAREY Bachelor of Science Ferris State College Business Education Typing Junior Class Co-sponsor GAYL VAN DOORN Bachelor of Arts Calvin College Typing Sentinel Sponsor 18 DUANE LAUBACH Bachelor of Science Michigan State University THEODORE FALKENBERG Mechanical Drawing Bachelor of Arts liiver Falls State College Agriculture Farm Shop F.F.A. Pus bribers Th£ Wooden Horse of ancient Troy had nothing on the horses of steel, otherwise known as buses, of our modern times for accomplishment. Daily these horses are harnessed by their dauntless drivers, and thousands are brought safely to and from school. To these sometimes harassed purveyors of human cargo who are not usually deterred by rain, fog, snow, or sleet, we express a wish for continued success and a thank you for a job well done. 25 LEON KIRK BY 3n jfltmortam Quietly he went about his work here in Coopers- ville High School. Always with a smile he greeted those who were his friends. Courtesy to everyone always was his philosophy. Those who knew him well loved and respected him for his quiet con- tribution to their lives. A beautiful June night, a dangerous corner, and Leon Kirkby went Home to he with the Lord he loved and served so well here on ea rth. I hese two fine young people—Marianne Bergquist from Sweden and Peter Exner from Germany have be- come an integral part of our life. As they have shared with us the customs of their great nations, so we in turn have tried to share with them the small things that add up to our own beloved America. Vi hat their being here has meant to all those concerned is im- measurable. They take back with them our good wishes for a successful and happy future, but more than this we send the seeds of understanding that we trust eventually will mean world peace and the cessa- tion of universal hostilities. 30 ALBERT ABENDS Kind of thy, but a flic 9uy. Mr Mulliii. 55 Class J)tStorp It seems as if it were yesterday that our journey through these hallowed halls began. That first day of school in our freshman year we met together in the gym for orientation, a little nervous perhaps, yet very eager. At our first class meeting we elected Bob Vi illard. president; Bill Bush, vice president; Pat Drooger, secre- tary; Steve Barkel, treasurer; anil Carol Southland, historian. An all games party helped us to become better acquainted with one another. In the second stopover of our modern Odyssey we became soph- omores. This phase of our journey was captained by: Larry Leni- men, president; Jud Johnson, vice president; I,eslic Lowing, secretary; Hon Davis, treasurer: and Julie Riesberg, historian. To help finance the prom which we would be putting on in our junior year, dues were levied. Once again an all games party was held in the gym. The most important event of the year was the day when we received our class rings. Our junior year was one marked with many activities. Chosen to lead us were: Tom Baldus, president; Steve Barkel, vice pres- ident: Shirley Frost, secretary; Gary Jager, treasurer; and Linda Busman, historian. In the fall W'e sponsored dances after the foot- ball games, and our float, “Knights of the Round Table,” took first prize in the Homecoming parade. During the winter months we sold candy bars, Christmas cards, and calendars in addition to sponsoring several post game dances. The junior play, THE PF’R- FFXT IDIOT, was a big success and was a large financial aid to our growing treasury. These funds enabled us to provide the best prom possible for our seniors. The prom was entitled A MID- SUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM. To chart our course as seniors in the final stretch of our epic travels, we elected the following officers: president, Larry Lemmen; vice president, Ron Barbrick; secretary. Fat Drooger; and treas- urer, Pauline Hecksel. For our only major activity, the senior play, we chose a drama entitled A MAN CALLED PETER. The waning days of our high school careers were filled with tvpically senior activities, climaxed by the prom and Commencement. These days will live in our memories forever, and as one part of our journey ends and a new part of our life begins, we shall always cherish these experiences we shared for four years as the Class of 1965. 56 JANET BUSH Many graduating seniors did not know Janet Bush. She did not live to become a part of the husy life here in high school. Yet had she lived, she would have been an active member of the (.lass of 1965. Anything Janet did. she did with a wealth of vibrant energy and a zest for living that made her stand out anywhere. W hen the dread disease that eventually took her life struck, she was determined to overcome it. Incapacitated with an amputated leg, she learned even to ride her bicycle with an arti- ficial limb. This kind of courage and determination was a basic part of Janet’s make up. It looked for awhile as if she would win her struggle for life, but on the threshold of Easter and Spring when new life was evident almost everywhere else, Janet went to be with her Lord. We shall never forget the inspiration she was to everyone who knew her. 3n Jflemoriam 57 Senior ScttoitieS ABENDS, ALBERT Phy , fed. I, 2; Moth Ciwb 4; Driver Ed. 2. BAKES, Ml ARON Phyt. Even though the season didn't show much success, score- wise, it certainly was successful. Fourteen graduating seniors had the opportunity to play on the new foot- ball field. Three team members attained All Con- ference standing — Steve Barkel, Bob Willard, and Jack Snyder. The team itself became an inspiration to the students and community. The team, the student body, and the community extend to Thomas Miller, head coach of the Broncos for four years who has resigned his football position, hearty wishes for success and future happiness. And it is our hope that the 1965 season will be even more successful. Coach Miller I si Hou: S. Barkel, R. kloostcrhouse, J. Fliearinaii, J. Dyke, W. Brown, B. Corner. 2nd How: J. («ales, S. These broncos under the able coaching of Mr. Marvin Feenstra and Mr. Charles Holleman produced some fine offensive and defensive playing. Some particularly outstanding work was done bv Mike Gordon anil Mike Ripka who led the team in scoring. John Schwallier, who led the team in defensive tackles, also showed some real promise. Mike Ripka was voted the team’s outstand- ing plaver. Running in fine form, the Bronco harriers turned up a fine season again this year. In the Seaway Conference they had a five win, one loss record which placet! them second in dual meets. In the conference meet we placed third, which gave us a first place tie with North Muskegon for the league Championship. The Broncos also placed seventh in the Fennville Invitational Meet and ninth in the Regionals. Topping the C’ville harriers were: Co-Captain, Jim Hohan (All Conference); Ken Key (All Conference), who also placed tenth in the Regional meet which qualified him for the State meet at Ypsilanti; Co- Captain, Stan Zemaitis; George Nieubuurt; and Mike Fettig. They sponsored the annual Homecoming, three assemblies, a talent show, the Hearts and Flowers Valentine dance, and Bundle Days Drive for underprivileged children. A Student Council committee along with some faculty members formulated a new dance policy. The bookstftre, another project under the able man- agement of Larry Taylor and Arley Bouwma, was of great service to the student body. The most important aspect of debate is that it teaches a person not to use assumption as a reason; a statement made must he substantiated by facts. Debate is invaluable in that it teaches one to think and to question, and many students of debate feel it is one of the most important courses they have taken on their Odyssey through high school. The flame of learning has been kindled in each mind: Each one of us must now his own way find. In retrospect we ponder o'er the years; The joys we've shared, the laughter, and the tears! Our memory cup is filled and overflowing W ith friendships madef with knowledge, love, and growing.
