JACK BOESKOOL Published Annually By The Staff of Coopersville High School Coopersville, Michigan Autographs 2 Foreword The 1960-61 Annual Staff is proud to present this edition of the ZENITH to you. It is our sincerest wish that you may cherish its memories, recalling the many happy events portrayed within, and that it may serve as a record through the years to come. 3 Autographs ALLEN G. ROBINSON, Superintendent Mr. Boeskool, Zenith Advisor, and the entire annual staff are deserving of commendation for another fine yearbook. Their com- bined efforts have put together in picture and words a record of the outstanding events of this school year that will live long in our memories. This staff has had the honor and privilege of being the first one in the new building. Along with that honor goes the responsibility of setting the precedents and standards of quality for years to come. It appears from the following pages they have ful- filled that obligation well. S Autographs Dedication Walt Whitman, the great American poet has said, “We face a future greater than all past.” Without the constant help and en- couragement of Russell F. Conran, our forward-looking principal, , Coopersville High School would not be what it is today. Keeping his eyes on the future, he has been one of the instrumental men in obtaining for Coopersville tbe enviable reputation it has won and kept for itself. His humor, his vigilance, and his quiet determ- ination are a part of the heritage that is now ours and will con- tinue to remain ours as we face the proud future with him at the helm. It is with a great deal of pride and pleasure that we, the 1961 ZENITH staff, dedicate this, our yearbook, to Russell F. Conran, our most worthy principal. 7 w, emoriam Jacqueline Fordham Timothy Fordham The community was shocked and saddened when on Sunday, June 26, 1960, tragedy struck, taking the lives of two of its finest young people. Timothy Ford- ham of the Class of 1959 and Jacqueline Fordham, Class of 1960, his sister, were drowned while taking a Sunday evening swim. A statement by Rev. Hessler in his funeral sermon is very fitting, we think. He said that while in life because they were close in age they had done many things together. Then he added that in death, too, they had gone hand in hand together. These two were both fine citizens, good students, and worthwhile friends. Though they no longer are among us physically, they will long live on in the hearts and memories of all who knew them. 8 Table off C O N T E N T S ADMINISTRATION DEDICATION BOARD OF ED. For so long we have waited and wished for a new school. Now that our dream has become reality, I am pleased that the 1961 ZENITH reflects the joy of our new sur- roundings, and presents pictorial evidence of the advancement in learning made possible by it. Mr. Boeskool and the ZENITH Staff of 1961 are to be con- gratulated for rising to the occasion with this outstanding publica- tion which will forever mark a year of great significance to young people and the cause of education in this community. 16 JACK BOESKOOL Bachelor of Arts, Hope College Secondary Permanent Certificate Vocal Music Varsity Choir English Bible Club Co-Sponsor Annual Staff DUANE BOHNE Bachelor of Science Michigan State University Secondary Provisional Social Studies Athletics JACOB BUSMAN, JR. And Bonnie and Mary, serving with flair. Were treasury chief, and class secretaire. Russia's first Sputnik circled our planet — Without those frosh, we'd liked to have manned it. But hayrides we planned, and skates on our feet. Those picnics at Long Lake — hoy were they neat! SOPHOMOROSIS 1958-1959 Academy winner: “Bridge on the Kwai, Missiles that soared so much higher than high, Soviet Union led by Nikita — Jim Bohn led our class — what could he sweeta, Lemmen the Veep, the treasurer Sandy, Queen of the hooks Jo Prince, and a dandy, With consuls, J. Busman and R. DeGraaf, Historian Wells completed the staff. Our class rings we chose (with others in mind), And decked out the gym — spaghetti can kind. Before our poor brains slipped into high gear, We slew-footed, Dad, toward our junior year. JUNIORITY 1959-1960 The moon-striking rocket scored with a blast! And we reached our mark — all juniors — at last! A new school in view, new officers, too. Pres. Edwards, Sec. Wolbrink, and Veep Gene LeMieux. Finances were kept by H. Judd O.K., And history hy L-I-N-D-A. Our class was advised by Tody and Holmes, And sometimes sought help from Fairies and Gnomes. Our notes must include the Hallowen Hop. The ball for Dan Gupid — was it a flop? The evening was microscopically grand — (How can you dance to an absentee band?) The “Isle of Dreams was the memorable prom. It lured, with their girls, Dick, Harry, ami Tom. “Make Room for Rodney, and “Balcony Scene — Dubious bliss in a playgoer's dream. Our junior year, while short of historic. Remains as piquant as paregoric. SENIORILITY In our senior year 1961 Historic debates on TV had begun. Coopersville welcomed its changes too. Especially a school, with twelfth grade brand new. Respectively leader, and vice-prexy Seniors Bob Wimbush and Pat Miszewski; Bookkeeper Ulrich — Noe the money, H. Speet the sugar —Streeter the honey. Our dramatists birthed a bundle of joy Presenting a farce “Mama’s Baby Boy. Glass pictures we ordained taken; were took. And some of the lads purloined a new look. Squares with the likeness of toadstools with hair Bartered mug-shots with delusion and snare. And after the cruise from Mackinac Isle; — That grand Junior Prom just brimming with style. June eighth appears — marking four fun-filled years. Our school gets our thanks . . . Our faculty, cheers! We leave with a happy, — serious grin. Sleepy-eyed and witless they strive to gird themselves for another hour of trying to put together the school year- book. Despite “wars and rumors of wars” the annual must be gotten ready. And, so, after many hours of turmoil, tension, and trials, we, the 1961 ZENITH staff, proudly present to you, the students of C. H. S., our yearbook. We hope that you will get as much out of it in reading and perusing it, as we have in putting it together. 117 Sentinel Staff First row: J. Englert, M. Phillips, K. Bennett, L. Troutwine, V. We fully realize all of the effort that goes into such a project, and we extend to them our heartiest congratulations for a job well done.
