They started on their high school career un- certain of themselvesg step by step they advanced. Occasionally some would stumble and fall, but through the encouragement of Mr. Conran and experienced teachers, the again began to walk. These steps have led them to 1959 - graduation year. The journey will not stop here, however. They have chosen as their class motto, One step at a time, but always forwardf' 3 MR. ROBINSON Even though a purchase price is fixed for the hook, it is difficult to deter- mine all the values that accompany it. The staff has gained some invaluable experiences in planning, composing, photography, and arrangement. Some salesmanship was involved in obtaining advertising and disposing of the hook to students and others. Cooperation with others was necessary. The educational and social values to the staff of those experiences cannot he fixed in terms of money. To the students, the purchasers, the worth of the book lies in the written and pictured record of fond memories of friends and events. Congratulations to Mr. Boeskool and the staff for an outstanding yearbook. BOARD OF EDUCATION BUILDING 4 MR. NOE The years spent in preparation for life can be of great value or of little use. The education that will help the suclent realize his potential is available in the classrooms of the Coopersville Public Schools. lt is up to the stuclent to put his time to wise use, and in later years he can look at the ZENITH and feel that the years depicted therein were wisely spent. Congratulations to the staff of the ZENITH for accurately recording the years at Coopersville High School. ELEMENTARY BUILDING 5 MR. CONRAN The 1959 ZENITH unfolds another cha :ter of events in the l history of Coo ersville Hiffh School, ictoriallv, statisticall , ecli- . P 1- P . Y torially. As years pass this chronicle of events becomes a souvenir piece and serves to refresh our memories of happy times spent in the atmosphere of learning, and of faces and occurrences from the past. To the aulvisor, ,lack Bocskool, anrl the staff of the 1959 ZE- NITH, I offer my congratulations for a fine yearbook. 6 Dedication LARRY KASTELIN 1 want to live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man . . . Everyone who knew Larry was his friend. He stood ever ready with his beautiful smile, a cheery word, and a quick bit of laughter to help anyone who needed it. He was a staunch and loyal friend when ever and wherever one was needed. His unfortunate accident and his untimely death affected all who knew and loved him. And so, even though he is no longer among us, he is still very much a part of us. It is with a great deal of pride and affection that we, the staff of the 1959 ZENITH, dedicate this, our yearbook, to Larry Kastelin, our beloved and so-well-remembered friend. 7 Autographs Table of C O N T E N T S ADMINISTRATION DEDICATION BOARD OF ED. RASMUSSEN P. uvmcsrom , -16 HISTORY Chapter 1, Volume 1 THE RISE OF THE '59ERS Oh, I can hardly wait for the summer t0 end.', Isn't it wonderful? 'flust think, we'll soon be in high school! These were some of the remarks coming from a class of ex-8th graders about four years ago. When the long summer was finally over, 159 stary-eyed children, called freshmen, enter- ed the Coopersville gymnasium with a varied group of other individuals, to be welcomed by Mr. Conran. Whatever these youngsters' illusions., some of them were certainly dampened after the first half-day of high school. Why, this was nothing more than a glorified grade school. A few weeks later these curious, inexperienced, partially educated, short, wimpy little freshmen were called together by their advisors, Mrs. Ruster and Mr. Vassallo, to choose their class officers. VV e elected the following people: President-Jerry Davison Secretary--Carol Timmerman Vice-President-Norma Bronkema Treasurer-Clark Throop Then we were informed that someone had planned a Freshmen Parents, Night, so our par- ents could meet our teachers. Most of us were very thankful for this timely information-we either refox-medf?5 or told our parents the true facts about teachers. After many long months in the penitentiary the school year came to a close. Our class celebrated with a picnic at North Shore, and left some mighty disturbed sand-dunes. The coming fall we returned like good little BRONCOS, ready to gallop through another year. Although we were no longer the high school babies and felt mighty neglected, we, never- theless, continued to give the teachers miserable daydreams and terrific nightmares. With the assistance of Miss Moxon and Mr. Busman, our sophomore sponsors, we elect- ed the following classmates as our officers: President--Paul Bliss Secretary-John Prichard Vice-President-Ken Hillman Treasurer-Bob Rasmussen Later in the year we chose our class rings, many of which had already been disposed of fin one way or anotherj by the time we brought our second studious year of high school to a grand conclusion with a picnic at Long Lake. Returning the coming fall, we were a group of kids with a purpose in mind, the Great Upheaval. We were no longer ufraidy-cat freshmen, or silly sophomores-we were juniors, a a title which was almost as good as seniors. Perhaps we also earned another title-Big-Wigs. fOn account of our heads, you know.j At our first class meeting of the year we elected the following officers: President-Bob Rasmussen Secretary-Carol Timmerman Vice-President-Gary Schwartz Treasurer-Ken Simpson Around Valentine's Day we sponsored a lov-a-ly dance entitled, Swinging Sweethearts for which we elected a king, queen and the courts. In March we presented the play Kissing Cousins which immediately became a hilar- ious hit. lAnd this was certainly not due wholly to the lines in the book.1 In May we gave a poem entitled I Love Paris for our superiors, the serious seniors. For this very special occasion we transformed the gym into a sparkling Parisian Cafe, and we even borrowed a TV antenna called the Eiffel Tower, so that we might create the righ effect. At the close of our ambitious year, our class and its weary, footsore sponsors, Mrs. Taylor and Mr. Boeskool, went to Long Lake for a picnic. After a tragically short summer we once again retumed to the Halls of C'ville. At first we looked and behaved much the same as before until . . . well, perhaps we began to change be- cause we now had the added responsibility of setting a good', example for the younger classes. We became known as the solemn for was it stupidj seniors. We elected the following people to lead us in our class activities: President-Paul Bliss Secretary-Delores Walt Vice-President-Gary Schwartz Treasurer--Barb Johnson Under the guidance of our sponsors, Miss Streeter and Mr. Speet, we were soon in a re- ular twirl of events. A short time after our senior pictures were taken we made plans for a class trip to Chicogo, so -- we began selling almost everything to almost everyone so that we could raise some more money. In the month of November our class presented the play, The Great Big Doorstep, which was a Hillbillyish masterpiece. We zoomed along until May when we sailed away to Chicago for a few happy days of no school, no sleep, and no devilish attainments-hardly any. Soon after we returned home, the junior class gave a prom in our honor. On June 4, 1959, our past history came to a smashing or rather devastating close. We were given a few needed words of advice by those far wiser than wen and a diploma. Then we were sent out into a crazy mixed-up world with two guides, which stirred up in the right amounts, make wisdom, - these are are knowledge and our experiences. C. J. T.
