CLASS HISTORY by Iva Lane McClure We, the Class of 1958, have many pleasant memories as we look over our years of high school. We began just as any other freshmen class, afraid, and with great fears and anxieties. As we took our respective seats in the gymnasium, we sensed that almost all of us would be spending three more years here, possibly the best years of our lives. Under the leadership of our class sponsors, Mrs. Ruster and Mr. Vas- sallo, we chose the following to serve as our class officers: President, Peter Van Kempen; Vice-President, Robert Ter Avest; Secretary, Vicki Lee Scott; and Treasurer, Melvin Modderman. In the way of activities, we had a few parties and climaxed the year with a class picnic at North Shore. As sophomores we returned with a little more assurance of our stay at C’ville. With the help of our sponsors, Mr. Busman and Mr. Bakker, and our officers — Robert Crouse, President; Patricia Kennedy, Vice-President; Ronda Ulrich, Secretary; and Leo Klein, Treasurer — we selected and ordered our class rings. As a class we sponsored our first big dance, Cupid’s Ball”, which was a great success. We also had a hayride and a class picnic at Long Lake Park in Kent City, Michigan. As juniors we were really up in the world, for now we could sit in the bleachers during assemblies. We knew, too, that we had two years behind us and two more ahead. This year we chose Robert Ter Avest as President, while Max Smith, Judy Shavalier, and Ora Smith were chosen as Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer, respectively. Our sponsors were Mr. Koon and Mr. Boeskool. We sponsored two big dances, Tie TW1RIL” and Hobo Ball”, and also presented our class play, One Foot in Heaven”. Then, we honored the seniors with our prom, Red Sails in the Sunset”. On September 4, 1957, we returned to C-ville as seniors. We had a very difficult time realizing that we were actually in our last year of high school. This year our class sponsors were Miss Streeter and Mr. Speet, and our first item of business was the election of officers. Robert Ter Avest was again chosen President, while Mary Johnson served as Vice-President, Janet Lundberg as Secretary, and Thomas Le Mieux as Treasurer. We immediately began to organize money-making projects, so that we would have enough points to go on our senior trip. Some of these projects were the selling of Christmas cards and candy, candy bars, and also selling refreshments at the games. We sponsored a number of record hops such as; 'Bronco Bounce”, Winter Whirl”, Candy Cane Capers”, Delight- ful Dilemma”, and Final Fling”. Next we presented our play, Accidental Hero”, which was a great hit. Then the juniors honored us with their prom, I Love Paris.” One of our most unforgettable experiences was our class trip to Chicago. We will never forget the wonderful sights we saw nor the grand times we had. And, now, as we look over our four years of high school at Coopersville High, we regret that they have passed so rapidly. But we are proud of our education and, also, proud and honored that we attended Coopersville High School. 30
