tiuJs the greatest hope for peace in the world. The crying need of our untry today is the trained mind, the skilled worker, the creative thinker, great is the need that our continued existence as a nation depends upon it. Vo'arc currently in a race with Russia in the production of scholars. Out qRuyational system is being challenged by a nation whose success is Wse tupon assignment and control, something we despise rather than on free will and free choice, things we cherish. This race will be won or lost in the class room where scholars develop their minds. The great men of America are saying this daily in the newspapers. In our school there is a weakness in this respect. A number of our stu- dents, who are fully capable of doing good work in the most difficult sub- jects offered, are detouring around these subjects to others of lesser difficulty. Classes such as Physics, Chemistry, Advanced Mathematics, Foreign Language should include these students, but do not. Why? If encouragement is needed, we offer it; if getting by is your highest aim, con- sider it; if you are understimating your ability, ask about it. Let us continue to be more concerned with scholarship and the con- tribution scholars can make to the national need. The urgency is vital. Russel F. Conran High School Principal 5
