U£ Foreword The senior class and annual staff proudly present this golden anniversary edition of the first yearbook, which was produced in 1906. It is our sincerest wish that it will recall memories of the past, record the present, and serve as a resource for the future. THE STAFF OF 56 8 Board of Education G. Fynewever, 1). Riemeisma, Ur. H. A. Schwartz, W. Shears, 11. Hekhuis. Heartiest congratulations to the Class of 1956 for having successfully passed another milstone on the pathway of life. For each of you we trust that Com- mencement” will not be the “end,” but only the “beginning,” and that you will continue your education by attending some higher institution of learning. This age needs you and all that you can give it — physically, mentally, spirit- ually, and socially. You have been a credit to your school and to the parents whose sacrifices have made your graduation possible. May you always be worthy of them! We are proud to have played a small role in your high school program, and we shall follow your future careers with interest. We should also like to add our congratulations on this, the 50th issue of The Zenith,” and to those whose efforts have made it possible. THE BOARD OF EDUCATION Dr. H. H. Schwartz, President Glenn |. The Hot Lunch Club was organized in the fall of 1017 and with much success has continued up to the present date. The membership this year is fifteen. Among the sidelines of the school, the H.L.C. is one of the best, especially with the system we have been using the past year. Each girl who does the required amount of work obtains a half credit. We, as members of the H.L.C., feel very much honored for still holding the position as being the best H.L.C. in the county. The girls feel very grateful for the kind advice given to them by Mr. Conrad and Miss Taylor. They also appreciate Mr. Knowlton’s assistance by keeping the kitchen floor clean. We hope to close this year with a social as has been done in the past years. When we began these four years, as a class of 122 Freshmen, we felt lost and uncertain. Amidst our uncertainty and instability we were fortunate to elect the following officers: President.......................... Charles town Vice-President ......................Paul Lachman Secretary........................... Connie Pfahler Treasurer...................................... Don Jablonski Advisors...................................... Miss Sawyer Mr. Vassallo Mr. Dunn In the fall we had a get-accjuainted party, in the winter a roller skating party, and at the close of the year a picnic at North Shore Park. When we came back as Sophomores, a little more intelligent and grown-up, we ordered our class rings under the direction of the following officers and advisors: President ....................... Dan Herrinlon Vice-President ................. Dale Bronkema Secretary ..................... Barbara Carlson Treasurer ................... Raynell Van Haver Advisors .................................. Mr. Bakkar Mr. Busman After the many festivities and much hardwork of the summer, we came back as Juniors, and now felt that we were really a part of the school. We elected the following officers to start us on our way to a busy and successful season: President.................................Lois all Vice-President ......................Tom VanDyk Secretary ....................... Virginia Bronkema Treasurer .................................... Loren I-othschutz Advisors.................................. Mr. Koon Mr. Blakkan We had a year filled with festivities, including the sponsorship of our play “Seventeenth Summer,” which was a terrific hit. We chose “Blue Hawaii lor the theme of our Junior-Senior banquet and took part in the baccalaureate and graduation exercises of the class ol T 5. Finally our dream came true. We were Seniors at last! The first job we did was to elect the following officers to guide us in the many activities of the year: President .......................... Robert Ulrich Vice-President .............................. Dale Bronkema Secretary ...................... Raynell VanHaver Treasurer...........................Gerald Holman Advisors..................................... Miss Streeter Mr. Speet The first activity was having our Senior pictures taken. Then came our play “Only Sallv Ann,” which was a great success. After selling a little bit of everything at the games and dining noon hour and sponsoring record dances to build our treasury, we decided to go to Washington. |).C. for our Senior trip. May 30 through June 2nd. Then, in the spring, came the Junior- Senior banquet, given in our honor by the Juniors. After our commencement exercises were over, with all of us together, our school clays ended. And now, with a feeling of regret that our school davs arc completed and hoping that each and every one of us will be a success, we enter this big, vast world, each going his own way. All we have left arc memories, and we feel that these four years of our lives have been spent in the best place ever — in the halls ol C ville High! T. A. F. 61 The Line Up Class Beauty.............. The play centered around eighteen-year-old Sally Ann Ross. Her father went on a treasure hunt, and she was told to stay at her Uncle Timothy Ross' while he was away. She was constantly humiliated by her Aunt Martha and Cousin Ruth. A new minister moved into town and fell in love with Sally Ann, which fact made Ruth very jealous. Three months after her father left for the treasure hunt, Sally received word that he would never return. One night when the family went to a church bazaar and Sally was home alone, a wealthy man. Hector Larkins, who wanted to marry Sally, came in the house and threatened her. A friend of Sally's, Crazy Jake, who was mentally ill, saved her by shooting Hector. Of course, since no one else was at home, Sally got the blame for the shooting. In the last moments of the third scene, Sally's father returned with more treasure than he had ever dreamed of. Two old maids, Adeline and Hyacinth, made the play hilarious. The characters were: Martha Ross (Mistress of the house)........................Lois Walt Drucilla (A poor relation) ...........................Garreta Buell Adeline (of the Sewing Circle)..........................Jerre Brittain Hyacinth (of the Sewing Circle).......................Heather Murray Ruth (Matha’s daughter) ..............................Oletha Powers Timothy Ross (Martha's husband).....................Loren Lothschutz AI Piper (known as “Huckleberry”)...................Roger Gunnenian Sally Ann (Martha's niece)............................Theresa Kinkier Crazy Jake (a poor unfortunate).........................Dick Lampc Hector Larkins (a friend of Timothy)..................Dan Herrinton Rev. Arlene 75 Room For One More The plot centered around Poppy and Mother Rose, who could never say no to a hopeless child, no matter how hard it was to make ends meet. In the “Pumpkin Shell,” their tiny summer cottage by the ocean, it was often hard to tell their own children from the strangers they took under their wing. Janey, a child from the home, became a problem. She was very shy and always afraid of everything. Miss Winston, a lady from the home, promised Jane she could stay at the Rose home for two weeks, but came home a day early to take Janey back. During the two weeks stay Janey had come to like the family, and it was agreed that she should become one of them. Jimmy John, another unfortunate child, who wore braces on his legs, had come along with Miss Winston on one of her visits to the Rose home. Peppy, Mother Rose, anti their family felt sorry for the child and asked him to stay. Jimmy John was very backward in his speech, writing, and actions. Through many denials and persuasions, in two weeks’ time he became a boy who found life was worth while. Poppy Rose died of a heart attack and the family became very poor. Mother Rose became almost hearbroken because of her unfortunate link in getting money for the family. Joey was going to college, and Jimmy John was having operations lor the betterment of his legs. Finally, after almost having to sell the “Pumpkin Shell” for money, one of Mother’s stories brought her enough money to run a happy home. Jimmy John was finally able to walk without braces and Joey was able to finish college. Teensie, with her little snake and turtle, added humor to the play. Dyke — Absent when picture was taken. Outs was an unusual stair, producing an exceptional yearbook under rare circumstances. This being the fiftieth anniversary of the first yearbook it called for special effort on the part of all of us. 1 In previous years duties were assigned according to our wishes and talents. This year we all had lew choices of work and an abundance of talent, so we pooled it by all working on whatever there was to do whenever it needed to be done. As time went on it was noticeable that most of us distinguished ourselves in certain fields of endeavor. Neil Halpin featured himself in art work; Madlyn Scott typed like mad much of the time. Hob Groencveld. solicited much of our advertising and generally offered stimulating company. Raynell Van Haver proved to be the hardest person to find for Saturday tours to pick up advertising, but in subscription work she was a “whiz ”. Theresa Finkler pounded the portable, headache or fair weather, setting up advertising copy. What Richard Quick lacked in work he supplied in willingness. Florence Dyke and Oletha Powers captioned most of the group pictures and solicited advertising along with their visiting. Duiing the subscription drive we became short-handed; Marjorie Austin, a senior but not a stall member, was so kind as to help us out. At times we were all positive we would never get this book produced, but we have done so with the aid ol Mr. La Due, who directed the “headache” department. 118 Sentinel Staff Seated — C. VanderVeen. The “Sentinel has been published by the advanced typing classes every two weeks. This project required typing stencils, duplicating the copies on the mimeograph machine, and stapling the copies. There has been no definite staff, as different people have worked on each issue. The editorial has been written by a class member, but each class and club has had a reported who has been responsible for the reports of their activities. A student in the art class has drawn and cut the stencil for the cover of each issue. Some cartoons have also been made by them. The first hour mechanical drawing class has sold each issue of the “Sentinel” in the various home- rooms. Members of this class also have done necessary bookkeeping. Approximately 250 copies at 5 cents each were sold each time. During the year the “Sentinel” exchanged papers with Comstock Park, Sparta, Zeeland, Hart, White- hall, Fremont, Otsego, Grant, Newaygo, and North Muskegon. The local board members received a copy of each issue. We think this exchange has helped to create a friendly feeling in sports, clubs, and classes and has thus included the entire student body. Mrs. VanDoorn and Mr. DeGeus are advisors for the Sentinel. 119 Girls’Glee Club T First Row 1). Schippcr. H. Crum. . Christian. L, Luben. S. Harmscn. M. Pool. I.. Six. D. I m lor. J. Cook. The vocal music department has had a year of major expansion. In the space of one year we grew from sisty seven mem- bers to approximately one hundred and seventy-five. Instead of one large chorus rehearsing in separate sections, we have three performing groups — a boys glee club, a girls' glee club, and a mixed chorus. Also, we have three ensambles formed out of these groups — the girls’ double sextet, the boys' tentet. and a barbershop quartet. Combining all three groups for the first activity, a marching chorus was formed to sing for a home football game. We then p resented our Thanksgiving as- sembly for the high school and began on ouur Christmas concert. An invocation also this wear was the presentation of Handel's wonderful oratario. THE MESSIAH. This was given by the mixed chorus in conjunction with a community chorus and was an unqualified success. Our next big undertaking was participating in our district vocal festival. I'his year we had nine entries — the chorus, boys' tentet, girls’ double sextet, and six soloists. Three of our soloists — Jerry Bonwkamp. Leo Klein, and Carol Flicarman — received a first division rating, as did the tentet. The chorus; sextet: and Marsha Cooper, Clark Reister. and Rodney Shim- mel received second division ratings. Our 1 joys’ quartet made several appearances, most notably the one on television on the Talent Quest program. We concluded our activities for the year with our production of Sigmund Romberg’s famous operetta, I HE SIIDENI PRINCE, on April 19. 1956. and our spring concert given in the school gymnasium on May llth. Our year was an industrious year of building our department. We feel. too. that is was a success, not only from a standpoint of building but from a standpoint of performances given well and given professionally. We hope to continue building until Coopersville ranks high on the list of top vocal organizations. 121 Senior Band First Row — I.. Courson. R. Quick. J. Handlogton, I). Inman. I). Jablonski, (). We finished the school year with a chicken banquet on April 27th. It was well attended, and all who came were exceedingly full of chicken when they leit. On June 18th eleven of our Ag boys, accompanied by Mr. Harris and two other adults leaders, left on an achievement trip to the Upper Peninsula and Canada. During the summer we harvested 1,850 bales of hay. We also had a food stand at the Berlin Fair. Between times we played softball. During the school year our Junior boys built two brooder coops. We Bar-B-Qued chicken for the Rotary Club and also for the faculty and their guests. We played basketball, sponsored a donkey ball game, and sent delegates to district F.F.A. meeting, at which time Dick Lampe was elected District Vice-President. We also sent delegates to State Convention and Leadership Training School. We awarded two schol- arships to graduating seniors. We started a calf chain and planted 15 acres of wheat. Officers are: Sherman Hecksei, President; Eddie urer; Rex Brittian, Reporter; Jim Verluis, Sentinel. Smith, Vice-President: Ronald Mr. Harris is our advisor. The girls enroll in 4-H Clubs that they may learn to do by doing. Since their interests vary, the club is divided into three groups — knitting, clothing, and junior leadership. Many of the girls enter 4-H that they may continue work started in their local communities. The •1-11 groups complete the requirements as outlined by the State Extension Department. In the Knitting Club the girls learn to make many useful articles and at the same time acquire skill for a very worth- while leisure time activity. The girls who elect 4-H clothing usually do so because they like sewing. In addition to making their garments, the girls also select the accessories to complete their costumes. Then theY model the completed costumes at the County 4-H Style Revue and compete for valuable awards. Some of the girls are acting as junior leaders ol groups organized in the grade school. Tim work can lead to a scholarship at Michigan State University. Last year Mary Hudson, a 1955 senior, earned the county 1-11 scholarship. Mrs. Vanderhyde and Mrs. VanDoorn are the sponsors of this club. 125 Art Department Future Teachers Club First Row — C. Flicarman, Vice President; E. Schesiag, C. Lowing, B. Schilling. N. Young. I . We have the honor of being the largest school club, with a membership of more than ninety students. We have sponsored many school projects during the past year. This result has been accom- plished successfully by working on a large scale with many volunteers from the group. Among these projects was a Pep Rally held in back of school the night before Homecoming. Followed by this project were the Homecoming festivities. 1 he Pep Club was in charge of all the general arrangements, in addition to the field and gym ceremonies. Throughout the basketball season, we placed Welcome” signs in the hall for our opponents, decorated goal posts before each football game, and sponsored Dads Night for the football boys. We also sponsored a Parents’ Night for the basketball girls, followed by Moms’ Night for the lxiys’ varsity team. 132 Second Team Cheerleaders First Row — M. Fyncwcver. I). Schmidt. J. Baldus. The weather was warm for that time of the year; in fact, it was so warm that much of the second half of the football game be- tween the C’ville Broncos and the Comstock Park Panthers was played in a fine rain. The Broncos were warm too. They continued their drive for Ken-New- League title by winning (19 13). Each class made a float to enter in the parade. The Juniors’ lloat was judged the best entry. The Sophomores' float was given second place by the judges. '1 hi Queen’s float was very beautiful. It was made by the Student Council, but did not enter the judging contest. The high school band led the colorful parade of floats and students down Main Street and back to the football field. The “Queen,” Barbara Carlson, and “King,” Robert IJulrich, were chosen by popular vote of the student body. The Queen’s court consisted of: Janet Anderson, Theresa Kinkier, Madlyn Scott, Sharon Nordwall, Virginia Bronkcma, and Connie Pfahler. Their escorts were: Jim Versluis, Tom Davis, Gary Ander- sen, Norm Lemieux, Tom Rasmussen, and Dale Bronkcma. The Queen, Barbara Carlson, was crowned during the first half ceremonies by last year’s Queen. Peggy Hastings. Robert Ulrich was crowned King by Queen Barbara at the dance in the gym following the game. The dance, sponsored by the alumni, featured Frank Lock- age’s Orchestra. Oletha Powers, President of the Pep Club, was the general chairman of the homecoming. 135 Dramatics Club First Rou' — I . Davis, k. Hurley, S. Hanson, M. Cook, M. Murray. M. Brown, M. Groleau. Make promises sparingly and keep them faithfully — no matter what it costs. 3. Never let an opportunity pass to say a kind and encouraging word to or about someone. Praise good work done, regardless of who did it. If criticism is needed, save face. 4. Be interested in others — interested in their pursuits, their welfare, their homes and families. Let everyone you meet, however humble, feel that you regard him as a person of importance. 5. Be cheerful. Keep the corners of your mouth turned up. Hide your pains, worries, and disap- pointments under a smile. 6. Preserve an open mind on all debatable questions. Discuss, but do not argue. It is a mark of superior minds to disagree and yet be friendly. 7. Let your virtues speak for themselves, and refuse to talk of another's vices. Discourage gossip. 8. Be careful of other people s feelings. Wit and humor at the other fellow’s expense are rarely in good taste, and may hurt where least expected. 9. Pay no attention to ill-natured remarks about you. Just live so that nobody will believe them. 10. Don’t be too anxious about your dues.
