J. Lan-ders QD FACUL V. A. ALTENBURG Superintendent Life Certificate-Western Michigan College A. B. Western Michigan College A. M. University of Michigan Science Seniors: You have graduated from this foimal round of study called High School. Some of you will go through another period of higher technical or vocational train- ing. Sooner or later, however, all of you will be .plunged into a real world where nobody tells you what to -do next, and nobody seems to care very much what hap- pens to you. If you are to find a satisfying life, you must be keen, res-olute, and adaptable. You must undertake kind-s of work and -tasks that may not be easy or pleasant. You must know how to co-operate with others. Your high school teachers have not tried to teach you what to think, but they have endeavored to show you how to think. Use your -time well, for everything of value must be earned. You have made an excellent record thus far. Best wishes for future success. - V. A. Altenburg. Poundrr SENIORS Clan Hilary A fine day early in September, 1942, found an anxious. .group of Freshmen warily approach- ing the portals of Coopersville High School. This clas-s was the largest ever enrolled up to that time. The new school buses, which had been purchased, made high school available to more stu- dents. Our Freshman class officers were: President ...........,.,.. ...... D onald Vander Zyl Vice-President ...... ...,..,,.l R oger Whitman Secretary ............ .......,......... J ean Roth Treasurer .......,......,...,...,,..,..,...,....,.......,.,, Marilyn Wolbrink An exceptionally large number of our group took part in the extra-curricular acti.vities offered at C. H. S. Many of us were a trifie bewildered by the different halls and rooms of Ole' C'ville Highf at first, but by the time September. 1943 arrived, we knew all the ins and outs and could sym-pathize with the troulbles of the Fres.h1es who had taken our place. As Sophomores, we chose the following officers: President ,,.,............ ...... .,.,. L a wrence McMullin Vice-President ...... ..,...,,,, R oger Whitman Secretary ............ .....,,,, H elen Holmes Treasurer ...,........................................,...,........,.... Betty Aney Although our Freshman year had been strangely void of parties., we started our 1943 social affairs off with a ban-g, in the way of a miscellaneous-games party in the school gym. Our enrollment had decreased somewhat, but as yet, the war had not taken its toll of our students for service in the army and navy. Several of those in our midst proved themselves to be outstanding in athletics. We began our very active Junior year with .a large turnout at a hayride and weiner-roast party at Eastmanville. We also successfully sponsored the second student-mixer of the school year. Two banquets, followed by theater parties. were given during the year - one, given by the boys in the fall, and the other given by the girls in the latter part of March 1945. The Junior- Senior Banquet was a gala affair given in a Mexican afmosohere. The school 'gym was beautifully decorated in brilliant colors, set off by cactus and liowers. The Junior Play, Act Your Age, was one ,of the most successful ever to be given at C. H. S. It was a play which was completely up with the times and it was proclaimed a huge success by the public. The ofiicers who so ably conducted the class through this completely successful year werezl President .......,.....................,............................ Kent Haystead ViceePresident ...... ...... M arian Fromholz Secretary ,.,,......... ...... R obert Ackerman Treasurer ......... ...........,.......,...,........,.... Helen Aulm And then, here we were Seniors already! We all entered our final year at C'ville High with hop-es for an extremely enjoyable season. We elected as class officers to represent us: President ................ ......... D onald Steffen Vice-President ...,... ..........,... H elen Holmes Secretary ............. .....,.,,,,,, H arriet Murray Treasurer ..........................,......,,.........,.,, Donald Vander Zyl Our athletic program was somewhat disrupted by Uncle Slam, when he took several of our star ath- letes into service. During Christmas vacation, Harriet Murray entertained us at her home with a party. It was a lovely evening spent in dancing, singing, playing games, and EATING. Before we had realized it, the first semester exams were at hand. Every one came throu-gh all right, with at least no visible bad effects. The next big event was the Senior Play. Strictly 'Contfidentialn which proved to be another of Mrs. Altenburg's dramatic successes. On May 12, we all set forth on our trip to Chicago on the ship. Everyone had a wonderful tim-e even though Tuesday found a very weary group trudging homeward. The Juniors entertained us in a most enjoyable fashion at the Junior-Senior Banquet. Frank Lockage's orchestra furnished the music. Baccalaureate services. were held on Sunday evenin-g, June 2, at the Reformed Church, and graduation was on June 7, climaxing our high school careers. I know each of us Seniors felt a little tinge of regret at having to leave Coopersville High School, the building which had come to symbolize the joys, sorrows. and achievements we knew together. - Helen Holmes. C aff Prophecy ' Aboard the plane bound for the city of Coopersville are many notorious characters. It ap- pears that it will give me an excellent opportunity to gather bits of information for my news col- umn concerning the members of the class of 1946. Seated behind me is Miss Marilyn Wolbrink who has just returned from Hollywood where she starred in a picture produced by the Peterson-Van Dyke Studio. With her are Dorothy Thur- kettle, winner'of the Academy Award for D-ancmgg Betty Aney, author of Red River -this year's best sellerg and Audry Waldie, employed at the White House as the President's private maid. The airline hostesses, Mary Ruthven and Patricia Reed, have just entered the cabin. They informed us that the pilot, Kenneth Wolbrink, is ready to land at the Coopersville landing field. On the landing field, Mayor Ralph Roman waits to greet us. The mayor will accompany us on a tour of this prosperous city. At the left of the airport i.s the new Lotterman Furniture Factory. Contractors Lester Langeland and LaVerne Stroven, have the building n-early completed. Joyce Grasman has been employed as a private secretary. Located in the quiet section of the citv is the Coopersville Memorial Hospital. The hospital is very capably managed by Doctor Harold Sheridan and Joanne Ray-Jones, head nurse. Coming up the street, we see that insistant, door-to-door, shoe-polish salesman, Don Van Der Ploeg. Mayor Roman directs. our a'ttention to the new Fromholz Pharmacy. The store was de- signed by that artistic team, E. Rozema and V. Crall. Amidst the test tubes and chemical appa- ratus is Harriet Murray, energetically filling prescriptions. Notice across the street, the exclusive hat shop owned by the scientific hat-designer, Mon- sieur Andre Aisseau tRobert Ackermanl. Waiting to sell you the latest atomic creations is Mon- sieur Petit Pierrot CJack Rietsmal. With an Uaves, l'amour tone of voice. he flatters the ladies into buying their hats. We quickly pass by as very few ladies are able to resist Pierrot's. tres char- mant sales approach. The local radio station is just ahead. Mary Jasiak, elevator operator, will take us to studio HB. As we enter, Burton Rankins is giving the latest news report: . In The Sports Field- James Morrison broke all speed records in the auto race. Laurence McMullin was award- ed the title of National Swimming Champion. Otterlbein and Vander Zyl will participate in the coming Rose Bowl games. College News- Ruth Hodson has been promoted Physical Education instructor at the L. C. Smith Univer- sity. Fred Anderson has accepted .a position as Professor of Agriculture. Latest Scientific Developments- A darinlg young scientist named Courtade has applied for a patent for a 'twear-proof lip- stick. He concocted it by using an amazing formulae: 1 dozen red roses Cfor colorl, 1 pint of axle grease to give it softness for the male friendsl, 1 pint of wax tfor wearing qualityj, an-d 2 grams- of nitroglycerin Cfor that ah umh qualityl. Farmers in the News- And here in Coopersville, we learn of Lester Werly's new invention-a jet propelled grain binder. County Agricultural Agent Eisen will demonstrate it at the Vollema and Bly Feed Elevator. Now we bring to you 'the Music Hour featuring Junior Busman, organist: the soprano voice of Ruth Van Weeldeg and the Coopersville Crooner, Don Steffen. Let us leave the studio for a period of relaxation at the Lorry Delicatessen Shop operated by Dolores McCue. Chatting over their chocolate sodas, are Harriet Harmsen an-d Dona Danen- berg, researchers at the Venem.a Laboratory. Only two veterans, Don Vander Zyl and Harvey Otterbein, returned from l44's team and Vander Zyl was injured during the second week of practice. September 21st, Sparta invaded Coopersville to take a close decision 7 to 0. The next week the Broncos dropped a 7 'to 6 decision to the Muskegon Heights Re- serves during a rainstorm. October 5th, the Broncos played Comstock Park to a 0 to 0 deadlock. Neither team threatened. On the l2'th, Coopers-ville journeyed to Zeeland where they lost a free-scoring game 19 to 18. At Hudsonville, the following week, the Broncos were snowed un-der 313 to 6. October 24th, the Muskegon Reserves defeated the Broncos 27 to 7. November 2nd, the Broncos returned home to defeat Cedar Springs 19 to 13, for the only Coopersville victory of the season. On the 9th, the season was con- cluded when Coopersville traveled to Muskegon to drop a 38 to 14 game to a pow- erful St. Mary's eleven. Although the record books show a very poor season's record, the 1945 seas-on has been a success in many respects. First, much ability has been brought to the front. Second, many players were shifted to positions to which they were better suitedid Third, one team member, Don Vander Zyl, placed on the All-League team as tac e. Our first league tilt was at Cedar Springs where we won an overtime thriller 34-32. Our team this year finished in fourth place in the Ken-Owa league with 6 victories and 5 defeats. The team felt very greatly the loss. of Vander Zyl and Whitman who left for the Navy in the middle of the season. The last week of our basketball practice was spent in getting the tournament tram in shape. The Broncos drew East Grand Rapids for their first game. This would seem to indicate that there is some very good material on the second team for next year's team. Don Sehmelling was the outstanding player for the Little Broncos.
