Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1987 volume:

1987 To every thing, turn, turn, turn, there is a season, turn, turn, turn, and a time to every purpose under heaven; A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to piant, and a time to harvest. 2 A time to get and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; V'.S - . • i •..............''-fa ?,- : ■ ' :• ✓ m- . •. ■ o TTTT 1 ’ + - 4j: '. •- ' -V -£ '■ir '■■ 1 (HI nil mum - u, .. r.:., : ' a, r--’--r;o. . v-‘-g U-:_ JR l .v :-' ,1 «z xs dfp DEDICATION Your persistent dedication to our community and to our school has not gone unnoticed and your presence here in future years will be great- ly missed. Asa teacher, coach, elementary prin- cipal and finally as our school superintendent, you have shown to us your sense of under- standing. For all of your magic tricks that we as kindergartners could not understand and the friendly smiles that we as seniors can appreci- ate, we, the Class of 1987, dedicated our year- book to you, Mr. Lambert. Just lying around. Raise your hands if you 're sure. 8 SENIORS WILLIAM CHARLES WALLER PRESIDENT The ultimate test of a person is not where he stands in moments of comfort... but where he stands in times of challenge. JOHN FRANCIS LAMBERT VICE-PRESIDENT Surrender is not a RANGER word. JONATHAN DAVID SVAHN SECRETARY SVAHN. one syllable. KEVIN PAUL LAMBERSON STUDENT COUNCIL The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds; and the pessimist fears this is true. LAUREEN ELIZABETH WOOD STUDENT COUNCIL If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however mea- sured or far away. PHILIP ROBERT STOUT JOHNSON TREASURER If I can rid your town of rats, will you give me a thousand guilders? ORION BE A DUNG SHELLY LYNNE BACHORIK The ladder of life is full of splinters, but they prick the hardest when we’re sliding down. Soap and education are not as sudden as a massacre, but they are more deadly in the long run. TODD SCOTT BAKER 13 ANNE MARIE BELROSE JENNIFER MARY BLAND You may not see it now, but whatever we learn has a purpose and whatever we do affects everything and everyone else, if even in the tiniest way. And remember, also that many places you would like to see are just off the map and many things you want to know are just out of sight or a little beyond your reach. But someday you’ll reach them all, for what you learn today, for no reason at all, will help you discover all the wonderful secrets of tomorrow. - ■' Sometimes the world's a storm but someday the storm will pass and all will be bright and peaceful. If you believe, look to the dawn and fearlessly bathe in the purple rain. DANIEL J. BOBNICK If I leave here tomorrow Would you still remember me? For I must be traveling on, now, ’Cause there’s too many places I’ve got to see. But if I stayed here with you, girl. Well, things just couldn’t be the same. 'Cause, I’m as free as a bird, now. STEPHEN W. BRIDGER Why can't everybody leave everybody else alone. TIM BUTHE LAURA ANN BUIE You cannot teach a man anything; You can only help him discover it within himself REBECCA HANNA BULLARD Then they were in an elevator bounding skyward. “What floor please?” said the elevator man. “Any floor, said Mr. In. ‘‘Top floor, ” said Mr. Out. “This is the top floor, ” said the elevator man. ‘‘Have another floor put on,” said Mr. Out. “Higher,” said Mr. In. “Heaven,” said Mr. Out. RICHARD CAMPBELL If there weren’t people unafraid to be judged insane by their peers, we'd still be living in caves. STEPHEN CARSON Tragt’s den Fuchs, so tragi's den Jager. SUE E. CHASE When the heart rules the mind One look and love is blind. When you want the dream to last Take a chance forget the past. Seasons will change You must move on. Follow your dream. KATHLEEN M. CHASE Fly But remember Don’t look down Take as much as you think you ought to Give just as much as you can Don’t forget what your failures have taught you Or else you will have to team them all over again. GUSTA V P. CH1ARELLO Striving for success without hard work is like trying to harvest where you haven’t planted. REBECCA SUZANNE CLARKE You ask yourself, where do we go from here? It seems so all too near. Just as far beyond as I can see. I still don’t know what this all means to me. LEIGH ST. JOHN CONNOR Someday our questions will be answers, and we’ll be caught in something so bright.... PATRICIA LEE CORCORAN Be yourself, who else is better qualified. SUSAN CRAIN While there is time, Let’s go out and feel everything. If you hold me, i will let you into my dreams. For time is a river rolling into nowhere. We must live while we can. And we’ll drink our cup of laughter. DEAN J. CORNELL You know I’ve always been a dreamer. (Spent my life running ’round.) And it’s so hard to change. (I can’t seem to settle down.) But the dreams I’ve seen lately. Keep on turnin’ out, and burnin’ out, and turnin’ out the same. So put me on a highway and show me a sign And take it to the limit one more time. TODD A. CURTIS JENNIFER DEMPSEY If I make a mark in time can’t say the mark is mine. I'm only the underline of the word. Yes, I’m like him, just like you I can’t tell you what to do Like everybody else I’m searching through. MyTFine!?! The thing to remember when traveling is that the road is the thing, not the end of the road. Travel too fast and you miss ah you are traveling for. KIRK A. DENNY CHARLES NOEL DOUCAS To be hurt, you first have to care. NICOLE PAULINE DOUCAS To be a champ you have to believe in yourself when nobody else will. DANIEL E. DUBOIS What a man thinks of himself, that it is which deter- mines, or rather indicates, his fate. ALEXANDER ELKAN Landing on your feet often requires using your head. LORI ANN FASSETT if the path be beautiful, let us not ask where it leads MICHELLE DENISE DCIDA Time, time is well spent only if you enjoy what you do. 22 BRIAN CURTIS FLACK There are but three events in a man’s life: birth, life, and death. He is not conscious of being born, he dies in pain, and he forgets to live. LAURA FORT We can go from boom to bust From dreams to a bowl of dust We can fall from rockets red glare Down to ‘‘Brother can you spare—” Another war ■ - - another waste land— And another lost generation . . . LAUREL F. GRAHAM Living, in fact, is nothing else than this process of accommodation; when we fail in it a little we are stupid, when we fail flagrantly we are mad, when we suspend it temporarily we sleep, when we give up the attempt altogether, we die. 2 KELLY GUTMAN If you’re going to climb, you’ve got to grab the branches, not the blossoms. ANDREW C. HAGE Time keeps on slipping . . . slipping . . . sli Into the future. Time keeps on slipping . . . slipping . . . sh] Into the future, want to fly like an eagle . ... to the sea. Fly like an eagle ... let my spirit carry me I want to fly like an eagle . . . till I’m free. Find your frivol revolution. BILL GRAHAM But there’s booze in the blender and soon it will render that frozen concoction that helps me hang on. TIMOTHY W. HANEY In a cold world you need your friends to keep you warm. JENNIFER LEIGH HEITZ The journey of life takes us through many times of happiness and sadness. We remember the happy times as the most loved and enriching experiences of all. Although the sad times do not outwardly appear to benefit us, they are, in reality, what builds strength and character in all of us. GREGORY C. HEAD All men should strive for perfection; however, they should expect it of only themselves. TAMARA ELLEN HIGGINS Only tame birds have longing desires. The wild ones fly. STEVEN HEWITT I love the thrill of speed. If you stay out of trouble, you can keep on going; but if trouble catches you, you’ll find yourself either dead or in the hands of the law. ARDEN HILL Life is a succession of moments, to live each one is to succeed. JA NINE C. HUNTINGTON Did I tell you why Mickey Mouse left Minnie Mouse? BOB JACKSON Never be afraid to fail or else you’ll never succeed. TIMOTHY R. IVERSEN For every problem there is at least one solution that is quick, neat, simple, and wrong. LYNIV ALEXANDRIA JEX MARISSA JA NINE JOSEPH A harbour, even if it is a little harbour, is a good thing, since adventurers come into it as well as go out, and the life in it grows strong, because it takes something from the world and has something to give in return. Nothing can bring back the hour of splendor in the grass, glory in the flow. But. we shall grieve not and rather find strength in what remains behind. WILLIAM ALEXANDER KERR This too shall pass . . . After all, tomorrow is another day. DAVE KNAPP You never know what you got till it's gone. AMY R. KUKENBERGER Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true. TED KIRK Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting: The soul that rises with us, our life’s star. Hath had elsewhere its setting, And cometh from afar. CHRIS LAVERS Beverly Hills, Century City. Everything's so nice and pretty. All the poeple they look the same, But don’t they know they’re so damn lame. ANDREA R. LUOMA PETER MATSUO Being an underclassman is almost as bad as shopping at J. C. Penney. Though much is taken, much abides: and though We are not now the strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are- One equal temper of heroic hearts. Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. MELISSA J. MERRIFIELD And if you ever hear me calling out And if you’ve been by paupers crowned Between the worlds of men and make-believe I can be found. GENE HOOT MILLER I traced my footprints through the sands of yesterday, back the way I came I was returning. FRANK E. MILLER if you can spend a perfectly useless afternoon in a perfectly useless manner, you have learned how to live. SANDRA L. MILLER When night falls, everything dies except my love. MICHAEL NELSON Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. JENNIFER ANNE NICOLS Everyone needs someone (especially when the phone has just rung for the third time) to remind them it’s always O.K. to laugh. TIMOTHY C. PETRIE Never measure the height of a mountain, until you have reached the top. Then you will see how low it was. DANIELLE MARIE PILEK And so the battle’s just begun there’s many lost but tell me who has won. The friendships built within our hearts and mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn apart. JOHN NICHOLSON One of life’s greatest sorrows is the impermanence of joy■ is LEILA REYNOLDS AH life is a purposeful struggle, and your only choice the choice of a goal. KIMBERLY ANN RIKER Until I learn how to catch rainbows and build mountains let me do for you that which I know best ... let me simply be your friend. GINAMARIE PUGLIESE I stood proud—I stood tall, high above it all, I still believed in my dreams. r.% EMILY DEXTER RODD “Pooh, promise you won't forget about me, ever. Not even when I’m a hundred. ” Pooh thought a little. “How old shall I be then?’’ “Ninety-nine. ” Pooh nodded. “I promise, ” he said. GEOFFREY RUDLOFF MATTHEW J. SAVOIE He who laughs, lasts. JOANN SCHALLERT The most difficult thing in the world is to know how to do a thing and to watch someone else doing it wrong, without comment. GAIA SCHERMERHORN Rivers flow. Oceans roar. Seas sing. Tides rise. Who am i? A small pebble On a giant shore? Who am i? To ask who i am? Isn’t it enough to be? AMY MORGAN SCHULTZ You know the day destroys the night Night divides the day. You try to run You try and hide Break on through to the other side. MARZYA ANN SDREWSKI We travel each alone. Our destinations dimly known. Pathways cross, recross. Run parallel or even side by side. And then divide. I learn—sometimes even change— Through sharing bits of me. Through knowing that there once was we. Goodbye, ” What makes it good” is knowing that the days we shared. Go with us on our separate ways. JEFFREY S. SHAUGER A man may fail and fail many times, but he isn’t failure until he blames somebody else for pushing him. NORTON X. SMITH Success is relative: It is what you can make of the mess you have made of things. When we lift the covers from our feelings. We expose our insecure spots. Trust is just as rare as devotion. Forgive us our cynical thoughts. If we need too much attention. Not content with being cool. We must throw ourselves wide open. And start acting like a fool. . . RANDALL C. SMITH The one with the most toys wins. JEFFREY S. TABOR The earth may not quake as I hoof through the sky, but the trail I blaze will be well traveled by. With the men among men and the boys with their toys, the Christian Hill Crew will make the most noise. 40 ROBERT K. TRIPP Raffiniert ist der Herrgott aber boshaft ist er nicht. 'M ALEXANDER R. THOMAS I look to the sea Reflections in the waves spark my memory. Some happy, some sad I think of childhood friends And the dreams we had. SCOTT E. WALRATH 18 years now where they go, 18 years now I don’t know. 1 sit and I wonder sometimes Where they’ve gone. JEFFREY D. WA YMAIS And all this could be just a dream so it seems never was much at goodbye. KATRINA E. WART Live every moment—love every day ’Cause before you know it your precious time slips away. Live every moment—love every day ’Cause if you don’t you might just throw your love away. MICHAEL W. WEEKS I am glad I did it, partly because it was well worth it, and chiefly because I shall never have to do it again. EDWARD S. WEIDNER I’ve been down a few times And it always makes me strong. You gotta love the wrong ones 'Til the right ones come along. CHRISTINA MARIE WILSON Days turn to minutes And minutes to memories Life sweeps away the dreams That we have planned. You are young and you are the future So live it up and tough it out And be the best you can. ROBERT D. YAKOS We should be careful to get out of an experience only the wisdom that is in it—and stop there; lest we be like the cat that sits down on a hot stove lid. She will never sit down on a hot stove lid againt and that is well; but she will never sit down on a cold one any more. THOMAS P. WIMHE Eggheads cussin’. Rednecks cussin Hippies for their hair. Others laugh at Straights who laugh at Freaks who laugh at Squares; Some folks hate the Whites who hate Blacks who hate the Klan; Most of us hate any- thing that we don't understand. Tarlac. a small town of about 200.000 people located on Luzan. the largest of the Philippine Is- lands. I studied at the College of the Holy Spirit, an exclusive school run by the sisters of the S.SP.S. order. Their system of education is extremely different from ours. A great emphasis is placed on morals and ethics rather than on academics. I would like to thank the Cooperstown Rotary Club for sponsoring my year abroad. It was an enriching experience! Laurel Graham 54 AUSTRALIA AUSTRALIA AUSTRALIA G’day, flates! I spent the 1985-86 school year as a Rotary Exchange Student in Geraldton, Western Austrailia. Geraldton is a town of about 20.000 people, located directly on the Indian Ocean. Due to its location, Geraldton has wet, cool winters and dry. hot summers that reach temperatures of over 120 degrees Farenheit. Its location also provides an excellent atmosphere for surfing, wind surfing, skin diving and many other outdoor sports. It is also the capital of the Rock Lobster Industry. I stayed with two top families during my stay and would like to thank the Roches and the Peppers for their hospitality. would also like to thank the Rotary Clubs of Cooperstown and Geraldton for their support of this program which has provided me with more memories than any other experience of my life. Nicole Doucas 56 TO THE CLASS OF 1987: You high school years will soon be over, and you will be leaving C.C.S. to pursue the goals you have estab- lished for the next phase of your careers. I've followed the progress of your class with great interest, and have been most impressed with the strength of character that you have displayed. In your academic and extra-curricu- lar endeavors, you have reached a level of success that you can be justifiably proud of having attained. Never lose your “can do” attitude. Your class will always be very special to me because it will be the final graduating class of my career at Cooperstown. !Ay best wishes go with you. Paul J. Lambert BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. Bushnell. Mr. Murdock. Mr. Monie. President: Dr. Lewis. Mr. Ellsworth. Mr. Selover. Vice-President: Mrs. Smith. 58 TO THE CLASS OF 1987: As citizens in our complex society we are constant- ly faced with the difficlut task of making decisions that are permanently going to effect our lives in some way. This decision-making process, and the enusing responsibility for it. is a challenge that all of you have had to accept through your high school years. For the most part, as a class, you have done an outstand- ing job in accepting responsibility for your actions: and for making decisions that are well thought out and realistic. In leaving Cooperstown you will find that the pres- sure to make more complex decisions and accept responsibility for them will grow in proportion to the number of activities you are involved in. Don't be frightened by this prospect! Insteadf consider the fact that you have learned to handle these pressures and challenges and that, as you mature, you learn to deal with stressful situations and accept them as part of our growing-up process.
