THE PATHFINDER TIME THE UNTENABLE TYRANT EVERY nation has been the slave of some besettmg idea The Egyp tians yyere slaves to the idea of life after death the Greeks to the idea of beauty, the Romans to that of conquest, the Rlediaevals to that of the church the Germans to that of the autocracy, our fathers to that of money We are slaves to the idea of time Time is the tyrant of our lives, it is the one god yye serve implicitly, universally, exclusively Art yye slight religion yye pass by poetry yye abandon Health yye neglect, beauty yye disdain love yve mock But time yye yyorship Time prescribes our every act VVe dare not move yy ithout consulting time It is almost impossible to state a thought yyithout bringing IU the idea of time VVe Cat by time, sleep by time, yyork by time, plav by time We record accomplishments, plan our future and even measure the distance from one place to another by time Even today cartoomsts portray time as a feeble old man yy 1th an hour glass in one hand and a scythe in the other But they still cling to the obsolete In reality he should be portrayed in the fulness of his youth yy ith a stop yy atch in one hand to keep tabs on us and a machine gun in the other to mow us down Some people, it is true, still cling to the idea that their time is thelr oyyn If there is anything they argue, that is free, it is time As they grow older poverty stricken For time is the most precious thmg in the yy orld yyhen yye remember that a sum of yy asted days yvill not give a year that is yyorth yy hile, and a sum of yy asted years yyill not give a lifetime When yye yyish to speak about accomplishments yyithout yyhispering the august name of time, vye refer, but with almost equal reverence to efficiency Efficiency is fondly regarded in the American mmd as the greatest contribution of this age to civilization It is deemed an agency for good, a thmg of yyhich one can not have too great a supply And so, since procrastination is the thief of time, efficiency is the policeman set to catch the thief By the use of efhciency minutes are changed into dollars, yyhich is after all, yyhat most of the yy orld is trying to do Time is money, our forefathers yy ere fond of saying But yye have gone farther, yye have learned that monev IS time But still there is danger in our conversions Money is tangible and the more you save the more vou have But time is far more subtle stuff VVe have Just tyy enty four hours a day income from God and the yyonderful thing about this income in time is that yye can save it only by spending it The more you save, the less you have The man yy ho begins saving time no longer has a mmute to spare Y . . y . v 7 , , ' Y 1 l . y v ' ' , v v ' ' v v ' Y . . . , . . . . t v hoyvever, they will begin to realize that when it comes to time they are v it ' 7 V. . v . v .
