Thy faithful abound and swell this sotmd, Honor and pride, WE WILL NOT FAIL. To Thee! C. H. S., the theme of the 1961 TALISMAN, presents to the student body and faculty the founding of a fine school--COOPER HIGH SCHOOL. The establishment of a new school, the growth of tradition, the development of skills and abil- ities, and the upholding of school honor, along with numerous memorable experiences, are presented by the 1961 TALISMAN--TO THEE! C. H. S. THE 1961 TALISMAN STAFF DEDICATION Dr. Cooper attained outstanding achievements as a great man and educator and as a master builder in the history of Texas education. He was a man of high honor and unselfish devotion, both to education and to the destiny of Texas youth. Among his accomplishments of leadership and service, Dr. Cooper was founder of Cooper Boys' Ranch, the superintendent of the Galveston public schools, and a college president. In tribute to the traits and accomplishments of Oscar Henry Cooper, the first edition of the TALISMAN is dedicated to his memory. STUDENT COUNCIL PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Dear Student Body, I am sure that all of us would agree that this has been a very successful first year for Cooper High School. In serving as the government of the student body, the Student Council has worked very hard for what it feels has best served the interests of Cooper High School. It is my sincerest wish that students of Cooper may secure the best education possible and, at the same time, enjoy the rich pleasures that come our way during high school years. May the future of Cooper High School build on the firm foundation of success. A fumble, recovered by Whorton, led to the next touch- down for the Cougars. Boyd ran from the one to put the Cougars ahead. Outstanding defensive players include Manning, Whorton, and Smith. A COOPER 26 CLYDE 6 Led by the passing of Waggoner and McCharen, the Cougars defeated a stubborn Clyde eleven 26-6. Wag- goner scored the only touchdown in the first half. Pol- son of Clyde scored their only touchdown on a 14 - yard pass. Chapman scored first in the third quarter w i th a 22-yard sprint. Tucker scored the next one on a tw o - yard smash off tackle. Midland scored soon after, and the score was '7-6 at halftime. In four downs Cooper scored again on a roll out by Waggoner. The third Cougar touchdown was a 25-yard pass to Chapman. Perhaps the most spec- tacular Cooper play thus far this year was a 94-yard kick off runback by Yarbrough for the final touchdown with 54 seconds remaining in the game. Even the tackles got into the scoring column as the Cougars ran over the Loraine Bulldogs in a brilliant de- fensive as well as offensive game. Coo per, scoring almost every time they had the ball, were for ced to punt just once.
