G ass jlgbfor One beautiful fall day in September, found a bunch of eager youngsters walking down the halls of Cooper Elementary School. This was just our beginning. Our teachers were the first outside of the home that had the chance of molding our minds and training us into becoming good American citizens. These first years were most important in helping us get ourselves adjusted and in making new acquaintances. The knowledge that we acquired during these years was to serve as a footstool for even greater things to come, such as participating in operettas and holding offices in the Elementary Student Council and the junior patrols. When we were in the seventh grade, we took a trip to Raleigh. We toured the Governor's Mansion, the museums, the Shaw University Inn, the Hall of History and had lunch at Washington Junior High School. We graduated from elementary school in May, 1954. We adopted our class motto, Pressing Onward, which we have kept all through high school. Our song, We're Marching to High School, was written by Virginia Green. Entering into high school in September, 1954, was the most exciting experience of our lives. Selecting the subjects we wanted to take, changing classes and different instructors were very new to us. fAfter getting accustomed to high school life, we found that it lost much of its thrill.j One of the most well remembered things that our class has enjoyed together was the formal dinner the Home Economics Class gave the entire tenth grade. Everyone was dressed in formal clothing. After dinner everyone went outside and took pictures. The dinner required a lot of work, but everyone agreed it was well worth the effort. Our next grand occasion was the Junior-Senior Prom, held May 17, 1957. Our theme was Hawaiian Cruise. We hired an interior decorator from Durham to do our decorating for us. The Rhythm Kids from Smithfield furnished our music. The most exciting thing that has happened so far in our senior year is the selection of our class ring and getting material for our annual. During our years we have gained and lost many of our classmates. Shirley Watson and Mildred Williamson left us but they decided to join us again. We lost Doris Kirby, Joe Louis Hinton and Bettie Jean Newkirk for matrimonial reasons. Willis Mitchell and Leroy Mitchell left us a few years ago. But above all that has happened to us, everyone remembers the fine relationship we have maintained between ourselves, the student body and the faculty members of Cooper High School.

Gkss yj!'O!0 QCY In the year of 1963, my husband and I decided to take a trip around the world to see our classmates. We are both employed at Fayetteville State Teachers' College. I teach French and English and James teaches Physlical Education and Mathematics. To our surprise as we boarded the plane, the stewardess was none other than Ella Everette, who informed us that Shirell Rowland was the pilot and Willie Williams was the co- pilot. Our first stop was in Washington, We were greeted there by Nellie Sanders and Marjorie Lockett, who were stenographers at the White House. They took us to Howard University where George Sanders was President. William Byrd and James McCalvin were athletic instructors, Winnie Eason and Flossie Williams are Biology teachers. After leaving there, we went to Byrant's Hotel, which was owned by Royastine Bryant. His wife, Lucinda Badgett was head Dietician. Working with her were Bettie Hood and Ruby Watson. After bidding farewell to our friends, we went to New York. On the plane were Mildred Williamson, who had gotten married and has two boys: Verdell Morgan, who is teaching at U.C. L.A. , and Ella Troublefield, who was head Beautician at the Troublefield's Beauty Salon in New York, on Fifth Avenue. After chatting for awhile, I picked up an Ebony magazine and discovered that Joseph DeLaine was the editor. On the cover was Miss Dorothy Cooper, featured actress of Unforgotten Love, which was produced by Jimmie Rowland, and directed by Samuel Whitley. We finally reached New York, where we found the Rest In Heavenly Peace funeral home owned by Paul Mangum, with Martha Williams as his private secretary. That evening we went to the office of Dr. Donzell Hunter, and found Mary Hagins, his nurse. In the adjoining office was Dr. Pauline Watson, who informed us that Pinese Utley and Arnetta Watkins were Laboratory Technicians at Columbia University, with Virginia Green as Dean. Then we flew to California. We went to the Welfare Department and found Cynthia Gardner, President. Leaving there, we went to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where we found Shirley Bell studying for her Ph. D. degree at the University of New Mexico. Dorothy Mitchell was there also, teaching psychology. We are now returning home, thinking over the things we used to do at Dear Old Cooper High. We can hardly wait until we get to North Carolina, to tell Principal N. L. Cannady, of the progress made by the noted class of '58. 1 I . , ff X14 .2 ' 'ETX f ffxxl 1-.xx sg ' M,ff,.zf A x ffl X Z X
