Fujiyama as the ship entered the harbor of Yokosuka, J apan. It was to be our first and last visit to this modern island nation. Poor weather precluded extensive tours of the countryside, but visits to A-33, with its many bargains, made several of us go broke saving money! For those who had the op- portunity, the sights' of nearby Tokyo, Kamakura, and Yokosuka provided an ex- cellent reflection of the industriousness and charm of the Japanese people.

hawaii The stop at our fiftieth state was, for many, the first visit to this island paradise Although preparations for the work ahead were foremost in most minds, the five day stay gave each some opportunity to explore the island of Oahu and savour its pictur- esque beauty. Whether touring the island in a rented jeep or surfing on Waikiki, Honolulu was an enjoyable port for the first stop of the cruise. Departing Hawaii, we again headed west, our next stop, Japan. subic ba From Yokosuka we headed south for sumo Bay, Republic of the Philippines- Here, thirty days of COONTZ'S time away from home were spent during five different visits. Inexpensive liberty, warm, tropical sun, and. the good base facilities were the feature attractions here. The first visit, only lasting three days, was highlighted by a ship's party at nearby Grande Island. After this stay, Subic became our base of oper- ations prior to and following periods on station in the Gulf of Tonkin. This in- cluded an eighteen day stay in late October and early November, when the enlisted and officers' clubs on the base gave us all a chance to relax. Other highlights included surviving the eye of Typhoon Emma while moored to the pier and celebrating New Years Eve in the tropics. The Great White Way Hey Ioe - you want cheep chow?
