Division Deep within the ship are located the two large 42,500 shaft-horsepower main engines. The operation and maintenance of these steam turbine units is the main responsibility of M Division. M Division personnel must be ready on split-second notice to make engine changes as ordered by the bridge. A The ship must provide all of the services which are necessary for it's own operation, as Well as the comfort and good health of the crew. These include such services as electrical power to pro- vide lighting and to drive vital equipment, and 24,000 gallons of fresh Water per day. It is M Division's responsibility to maintain these services by operating and maintaining the ship's generators, distilling plants, and other auxiliary e- quipment, in addition to the main engines.
