To WM Division belongs the responsi- bility of maintaining the Terrier Guided Missile Launching System and the Terrier Guided Missiles themselves. The many missiles must be periodically tested to ensure that they are GO , ready for firing at all times. The electrical and hydraulic Missile Loading and Launching equipment requires loving care to keep it in top notch condition. When a threat to the ship exists and General Quarters is sounded, each man quickly mans his station in the mis- sile House. The Missiles are brought up to the assembly area from the maga- zine, fitted with fins and readied for firing. They can then be moved directly on to the launcher for the immediate defense of the ship. Division 2' ,-r LTJG R. P. REMPT, USN Missile Officer Boyette, L. Anderson, S. F. Caskey, G. R. Compton, G. VV 511: Va 22 lst Division W p With lst Division rests the responsi- bility of maintaining all the deck gear and of keeping the fc'c'sle, the port and star- board sides of the main deck, and the sides of the ship and lower superstructure free from rust and covered with a smooth coat- ing of fresh paint. With all the salt water and incessant spray hitting these areas, it's a never-ending job. It seems as if 'each time they take a surface down to bare metal, sand it, cover it with red lead, and then paint it gray, it's ready to start again. It's an inescapable fact however that lst Division is responsible for the sharp ap- pearance that COONTZ always presents. 'Q r N 1 i L'l'-IG J. C. Responsible for the boats, boat- decks, fantail and especially the Quarter- deck area, 2nd Division has it's hands full. The Quarterdeck is normally the first spot a visitor sees, and thanks to 2nd Division his first impression is always highly fa- vorable. The crew depends on them for liberty boats, and 2nd Division is always called on to repair the damage after a mis- sile shoot. Though labeled 2nd , the spaces and equipment under their care are always 1st rate. 1-Q ENS J. H. BARKER, III, USN Second Lieutenant Wood, 'D. E. Alexis, J. J. Avarello, J. Binyon, J. G. A short time later he returns with the facts fully analyzed. The chief assigns his most competent man and sends him into the troubled area. In most cases the troubleshooter returns shortly with the satisfaction of a job well done. This briefly describes a segment of the operation of the Electronics Technician Gang, known as the ET Gang . Made up of Dama e Controlmen Elec g 2 ' trician Mates, Enginemen, Interior Commun- icators, Machinist Mates, Machinery Repair men and Shipfitters, R Division is definitely the most diversified division aboard ship. The spaces for which the men of R Division are responsibile are scattered throughout the ship and the equipment they must repair ranges from ship's service generators to potatoe peelers. Keep 'em well oiled P ettit HC-lfs Fidel Castro Checked by the Doc THE CRUISE It was a warm California day on that fateful Monday July 25th, 1967 when we left San Diego for COONTZ'S Fifth WESTPAC Deployment. There were heavy hearts, both on the pier and on the ship, knowing that there would be six lonely months ahead. For us aboard COONTZ that day saw the culmination of a long period of' prep- aration. After a lengthy stay in Bong Beach Naval Shipyard following her pre- vious deployment, COONTZ had returned to San Diego on March 21st and resumed intensive training for her return to South- east Asian waters. The seven weeks of refresher training will not be easily forgotten. The long work- ing hours and many days at sea had paid off, for COONTZ was ready -- ready to assume any task assigned to her. Poor weather precluded extensive tours of the countryside, but visits to A-33, with its many bargains, made several of us go broke saving money! After this stay, Subic became our base of oper- ations prior to and following periods on station in the Gulf of Tonkin. This was the first visit of a United States Naval Warship to an Indonesian port since early 1963. Our visit was one of many formal functions, and yet, each man aboard had an opportunity to see a small part of the country and meet its friendly people. The first day began with the exchange of calls by the Commodore and Captain with high ranking Indonesian Naval Dfficers and the United States Ambassador. At noon the Wardroom hosted a luncheon for Ambassador Green and 14 Indonesian flag officers. That evening RAd.m Nimpuno held an informal dinner party at his home for the officers of COONTZ and DESRON 17 Staff. A small group departed on an overnight bus tour to Bandung, 120 miles to the South, where they played softball with University students and enjoyed outstanding hospitality. Twice daily tours took men around Djakarta and enabled them to shop where selection and bargains were best. COONTZ played local teams in basketball, volleyball, softball, golf and badminton. On both evenings the crew hosted a party at Tandjung Priok for the Indonesian sailors, with dancing, refreshments and American movies. During the two days, over 6,000 visitors were able to tour the ship. On the final evening the COONTZ Wardroom held a reception on the fantail for over 100 high ranking guests. The visit was an exciting one, filled with new experiences and new friendships. 72 A , . jg , V, 9 'v.f Pilots departing RAdm. One of the main highlights of the cruise was the visit to Hong Kong from December 23rd - December 27th. This is a city where East and West mergeg a real blend of cul- tures and customs. The new pay raise went to good use as COONTZ sailors took ad- vantage ofthe bargain prices, and the many places of sightseeing interest. Christmas day was highlighted by a steak cookout on the ship. The following day, COONTZ sail- ors distinguished themselves by assisting at a Christmas party for four thousand orphans. Hong Kong was truly an unusual Place to spend Christmas. ... The visit was highlighted by a dance and reception on the first night given by mem- bers of the Australian American Asso- ciation. The ships dance band made their debut here and were very well received. The sincere hospitality and friendliness of the Australians was truly remarkable. While here, over 9,000 Visitors toured COONTZ. It was a visit which will not be soon forgotten. 'Roo in a zoo N86 J .4 M -- , ,qi a :aa A n , s n X, , , 'Q F --. The COONTZ popular music group made a real American impression during its six appearances, and the soft- ball and basketball teams gallantly played local clubs. In appreciation for the ex- cellent hospitality, the officers hosted a reception that' was attended by over 100 influential New Zealanders.
