If I THE AWARDS While Moored in KAOHSIUNG, TAIWAN BAY, Commander Charles W. Cummings, of Coronado, California, Thomas L. Lanmon, RDl of Elgin, Texas, and Eugene R. Self, RDl, of Lancaster, South Carolina, were awarded the Navy Commen- dation Medal with Combat V . Commander De- stroyer Squadron Seventeen, Captain Elmer L. Fox, of La Jolla California, presented the dec- orations in behalf of Commander in Chief U.S. Pacific Fleet, Admiral Roy L. Johnson. The medals were awarded for meritorious achievement in combat operations against the enemy while serving with the U. S. Seventh Fleet off the coast of VIETNAM on the early morning of 14 JUNE 1966. COONTZ under the command of Commander Cummings detected unidentified low fljdng aircraft on radar off the coast of Vietnam near THANH HOA. Self was on watch in COONTZ combat in- formation center serving as air controller, Lanmon was awal ened for special air controller duties and responded immediately. Together Self and Lanmon assumed control of an armed combat air patrol launched from the USS RANGER using proper voice radio Telephone precedures, and precision air controlling Self and Lanmon directed the intercept to a successful completion in the shortest possible time, providing maximum safety for friendly forces. Following the initial intercept a second intercept was made with sparrow missiles fired for a downing of one hostile air craft. The skillful application of professional knowledge and devotion to duty displayed by both Self and Lanmon aided the success of this rare shipboard controlled intercept. During the intercept Commander Cummings personally supervised the intercept from the combat information center. His out- standing leadership and professional skill during the night air action reflects great credit upon Commander Cummings. 74
