COMMANDING OFFICER COMiMANDER C, V. CUMMINGS, US. NAVY, a native of Porterville, California, assumed command of USS COONTZ on 14 August 1965. He reported to COONTZ from duty under instruction at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Washington, D. C. Subsequent to graduation from Porterville High School, he received two years of undergraduate study at Stanford University, Fol- lowing Stanford University he entered the United States Naval Academy from which he graduated in 1946. Previous experience at sea include billets aboard USS DULUTH (CL-87), USS GUNSTON HALL (LSD-5), USS MOUNT McKINLEY (AGC-7), and the USS BRADFORD (DD-546) prior to attending the Naval War College at Newport, Rhode Island. Following a tour on the staff of Commander-in-Chief, U, S„ Pacific Fleet, he assumed command of the Pearl Harbor homeported USS CARPENTER (DD-825). During the cruise on COONTZ, Commander CUMMINGS has been awarded the Naw Commendation Medal with the Combat V and the Navy Bronze Star. E X o E C F F I E V R LIEUTENANT COMMANDER E. W. HAYS, U.S. NAVY LIEUTENANT COMMANDER E. W. HAYS U.S. NAVY, a native of Giltner, Nebraska reported aboard USS COONTZ in September 1965 from duty as an instructor at the United States Naval Academy. Upon entering the Navy in 1949 following the graduation from Giltner High School, he attended the Naval Academy, graduating with the class of 1953. Previous experience includes sea duty on board the USS MENIFEE (APA 202) and USS RAYMOND (DE-341) plus duty with the pre- commissioning and on board USS TOPEKA (CLG-8) and USS HOEL (DDG-13) Lieutenant Commander HAYS graduated from the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School in 1960 and grad- uated from George Washington University in 1965. Lieutenant Commander HAYS resides in San Diego with his wife and three children.
