JUS T PASSING THRUUGH . Transiting the Turkish Straits. One of the more romantic sights. TCIRKE Y! One of the many Turkish castles we encountered. Station the Special Sea and Anchor Detail, said the Boat- swain's Mate of the Watch as the USS COONTZ steered on course for the Turkish Straits. For the next six hours. crew members remained on station while the ship maneuvered around the countless numbers of fishing vessels. Once through the Straits. the GSS COONTZ exercised its right of free passage by cruising as near as eight miles from the coast of the Soviet Union. Soviet Naval ships were a common and everyday sight. The Black Sea has been called The Backyard of the Soviet Union, yet the USS COONTZ and other ships from the battle- group waived the flag, providing a show of United States Naval Seapower.
