D IVIASI Having returned to COONTZafter a two year absence, I can say that she is still and always will be the finest warship in the LLS. Navy. For an individual ship to maintain the same high standards of operational readiness over a four year period is an amazing accomplishment. COONTZ has done this! This achievement is entirely due to the fine American sailors who have made up her crew. As the ship has matured, so have the officers, chief petty officers, and crewmen grown professionally and militarily, striving to be battle ready at any time on a moments notice. I am proud to be a part of this battle proven warship. fl ' -fr A F IIIW1 X jf 1 f x 2 X fy , 'f Q7 ,,,i.....a.am Js.. .CEU ,1 1 , W , S , . 1554 sid ..,1. :in-. Naples. Italy was the first port of call for the USS COONTZ, and a new experience for those sailors who had never been in the Med before. Hey Joe's were abundant everywhere, as well as the crazy cab drivers who would go anywhere for a Lire. Naples is a city where almost anything can. and did. happen. Who can forget Pyro Woman. the young lady that lit furniture on fire in the busy streets of the city? Or the midget who ran the streetside music store which sold tapes by everyone from ACIDC to Lawrence Welk? Sailors with a more historical point of view enjoyed the many tours to Rome and Pompei, the city destroyed by a volcano centuries ago. Naples itself had many works of art in its streets. Ancient statues, fountains and cathedrals were a common sight. Naples is a city that no sailor will easily forget when he thinks back to his days in Italy as the city of Hey Joe's and square pizza. Transiting the Turkish Straits. One of the more romantic sights. TCIRKE Y! One of the many Turkish castles we encountered. Station the Special Sea and Anchor Detail, said the Boat- swain's Mate of the Watch as the USS COONTZ steered on course for the Turkish Straits. For the next six hours. crew members remained on station while the ship maneuvered around the countless numbers of fishing vessels. Once through the Straits. the GSS COONTZ exercised its right of free passage by cruising as near as eight miles from the coast of the Soviet Union. Soviet Naval ships were a common and everyday sight. The Black Sea has been called The Backyard of the Soviet Union, yet the USS COONTZ and other ships from the battle- group waived the flag, providing a show of United States Naval Seapower.
