But We Were ot Alone Venturing into the Black Sea, the Aegian Sea and the various other areas which were new to many of the crew, was a time of curiosity and great adventure. Crew' members saw vessels from other nations, planes of sorts from local countries, many sights which come once in a lifetime for a down-home country man born back in the woods of North Carolina with merely dreams and fantasies of the other side of the world. But now all of that is reality as these ventures brought the dreams to real life: real people, real places, real experiences, nothing money can buy but remains a lifetime memory. 50

But for the crew of COONTZ it was much, much more. There were the great ports of call. There were the rough seas. There were the new people to meet. And there were the times of work, hard work. One such time was into the Black Sea, one of the primary operating areas of the Soviet Navy. The object of being there - freedom of navigation - was strongly illustrated by COONTZ and her crew. It wasn't the most exciting place to spend the '81 Thanksgiving, but there was a job to be done, and COONTZ did it right. Many were the times we saw Soviet vessels and other vessels of other nations, but our freedom of navigation was imminent. And we let it be known.
