VICK uneaw., 'qt M' , Y' W' 4--N 63,110 ' Uur town is fortunate in having a progressive Board of 'lirustees made up of seliesacrificing, lar-sighted leaders who are never willing to give up a fight if it is for the good of the children ol' our town, or the hetterment of the community. Meeting the needs of the rapidly growing school population has, as in most places, offered a challenge to these puhlic spirited servants of the people. ilihe almost llercu- lean joh of providing adequate facilities for classroom worlt, alone, has offered its many prohlems. Because of the tireless efforts of these trustees in soliciting the cooperation of the citizens, the Wilsoll Board of Education is now launching a four-project school huilding program to he completed within the ensuing months. Present day high school juniors and seniors suffer pangs of regret, perhaps, that they will not have a chance to weave their memories of the old Charles L. Coon High School with the new huilding to he located hetween Nash and Tilghman Roads. The freshmen and sophomores an- ticipate heing among the first to graduate from the new school. Surely they will give all honor and credit due to the Board of Trustees. U01 Forever, we shall rememher our principal, lklr. George S. VVillard, lr., as the key to our golden memories. hir. VVillard has opened the door to an important era in our lives. lo us he is an example of a gracious gentleman, an ever-helpful adviser and a trustworthy friend. ln short, he is like a partatime father. VVe shall always rememher little pictures ol' him -his wistful smile, his ready humor, his quick sym' pathy, his fitting jokes, and his justice to all. 'lihis spring, as we leave, we will rememher our golden moments of memories which he has lived with us, and we will keep in mind his amhitions for us and his desire that we live good and useful lives. On November 20, 1956, school officials, city digni- taries, representatives of civic and church groups gathered at the site of the new senior high school to participate in the ground-breaking exercises. Dr. Ralph Pike, chair- man of the Board of Trustees, presided at the hriel cere- mony which was closed with a prayer led hy the Reverend Clyde E. Coon lligh School started the 1956 football season rather slow, losing their first three games in a row. hlost of these losses can he ac- counted to injuries and sickness. Many of the kev men, on defense especially, were out of action. Their first loss of the season came at the hands of the powerful Northeastern AA team from VVashington. The team showed they were willing to fight down to the end, but lost 19 to 12. Then came the defeat at the hands of the Goldsboro Earthquakes, 20 to 13. Meeting the Raleigh i'Caps at Fleming Stadium, the Cycs were ready to get into the win column. Before the evening was over, the Caps had defeated the Cycs by a score of 46 to 13. The next game of the season was against the Bed Devils from Kinston. The boys who were missing action got into this game, coming hack home with a 20 to 14 victory. Ol The Cyclones were on the road to one of their most sucf cessfuliseasons in many years. Durham furnished the competition for the Cyclones next. ln this game the Cyclones defeated the Bulldogs bv a score of 14 to 7. Traveling to New Bern, the Cvclones had one of their best nighlts of the season. They came back home with a 34 to O win. lt looked as if the 'ICvcs could have set the score for this game, but were held to only 34 points. The Fayetteville Bulldogs came to Wilson for the Home coming Came. By this point in the season, the school spirit was really booming. After a hard-fought battle, the Bulldogs went home with a 14 to 7 victory. The Bulldogs went on to become co-champions of the State AAA. This defeat seemed to fire the Cycs up. Coing to Wilmirig- ton on the regular train trip, the Cyclones were able to fight out a 13 to 7 decision over the Port city boys. L. C. ll. S. During the football, basket- ball, and baseball seasons, the enthusiastic spirit that en- gulfs us all can be largely accredited to the Booster Club. lhe Sock llop, at which clean socks become dirty, and dirty socks, dirtier, and Pep Week, preceding our tra- ditional football game with Bocky Mount, are some of the projects of this active group. Anywhere there is team action and frantic excitement surrounding it, you will find the Booster Club in the midst, leading the cheers and proclaiming their loyalty to the school. Picture taking, word choosing, midnight oil burn- ing, laughter, tears-all unforgettable experiences- When our staff first met last fall we discovered that we had no place to work due to the crowded conditions. After numerous explorations of everv corner and cubby hole we settled ourselves on a Hshelf under the balcony of the auditorium. At times we were on the verge of hysteria- readv to quit in desperation-but we didnlt. We smiled. grabbed our umbrellas, prayed for the sun to come out, took another picture anyway, wrote more copv, and surprisingly we made itl llere is the bookl VVe hope that it will be, for you, Todays golden Inoments preserved for tomorrow. With eagerness, this group went forth last fall with one purpose in mind, to sell the school in the eyes of the merchants of VVilson. This they did with pleasing attitudes and polite words and provided the financial foundation upon which the yearbook IS set. It wasnt an easy taslt, but they went after it with happy hearts and an enthusiasm which enabled them to complete it successfully. The rainy days, the interviews with businessmen, and the salesn will remain in the memories of those who formed the 1957 Business Staff. ws. ,LIB 'Ql- mm-or I7 'il N nas f' K 11 Q17 'GFS' t mir: IIYDE, llluu, CRAWLEY.
