Nearly 500 eighth grade students entered the high school, and 185 seniors began the last lap leading toward the high school diploma. Our Superintendent and Board of Education had anticipated the big increases in enrollments and pushed plans to provide urgently needed school buildings. In November, citizens in the city and county of XX'ilson carried, hy a wide margin, a bond election that would hnance the construction of a new Senior High School as well as other needed school buildings. Donations of valuable property by Mr. VU. O. Harrison and Mr. XV. D. Adams provided sites for two school plans, and the Board of Education selected Deitrick and Knight to complete the architectural planning for our building program. The school year, which opened with housing problems of great proportions, closes on a note of B?fft'7' Drip Ahead. 1 ff Mr. Cbtzpfvell and Mr. . P1'i11i'ijh1f of Cl1iz1'fe.i' L. C0012 High Sffwonf Mr. George S. Wfillard, jr. has won for himself a permanent place in our hearts for his never failing devotion to us and our welfare.XWith his ever-ready smile denoting his habitual good-will, with his deep and unfailing sympathy exhibited to us at all times, and with his complete understanding of our problems, he has given us needed guidance throughout our high school years. We love and admire him, and he will remain in our memories as one who, on all occasions, has given us a feeling of pride in ourselves, and in our school. Because of his own pattern of life, we recognize him as one who is capable of, and en- gaged in, one of the most important jobs on earth-shaping and directing the minds of our youth towards the best there is in them for the glory of their nation, their state, their city, their home, their school, and their God. 1161 Each student in high school has his name on some homeroom roll, and his homeroom teacher assumes the responsibility for making him feel wanted and needed, Each teacher is a counselor and therein lies the strength of our school. How- ever, if special problems arise, or if information is desired on such subjects as college entrance re- quirements, vocational guidance, or personal mat- ters, the students receive a welcome from the specially assigned counselors, who are glad to study their problems, listen to their woes and help them in every way possible. They render the students a real service in guidance. may fAe way DEAN Oli BOYS- lVll'. Roscoe A. lfllelt. Assls'I'AN'1's ef.c'fl lu rflrflff .l. Sasser, M. Teacher, H. I.. Lamm. D. Adjusting onels self to school routine isn't easy after three lazy months of summer vacation. Fas- cinated by the attractive variety of salads, desserts, and doughnuts dis- played in the cafeteria, the eighth graders look forward to a chance to choose just what they want for lunch. The girls look longingly at the candy for they have suddenly become calorie conscious. The eighth grade advisers line up for their picture. They are: iiflizzg- Mrs. Clara Stewart, Mrs. Mildred Bullard, Mrs. Maxine O'Connell, .ilamlizzg-Mr. Howard O'Connell, Mr. Gilbert Rose and Miss Virginia Knowles. Mrs. Kathleen Patterson erases a late comer's name from the at- tendance slip. Mrs. Flora I-lanschrow gives a friendly word of advice to her eighth grade son and some of his friends while Mrs. Walls awaits her turn. Miss Knowles needs a refreshing drink after teaching her physical education class. Cold feet, holey socks, and mixed up shoes-all a part of the fun at our annual sock-hop. Whe11 I blow the whistle, said Miss Knowles, freeze . . . and Sonny took the picture. George Ann Willard and Rosa- lind Pittman add some toys to the collection for the Christmas op- portunities, and day by day the eighth graders learn the ways of the high school. We were soon to feel the difliculties of weaving together the pages of this, our story, in word and picture. Beginning eagerly and enthusiastically, we, a raw crew, found ourselves in the midst of a new and strange world-one of picture taking, consultations, layouts, selling ads and subscrip- tions, and editing a book to express the entire student body's activities and emotions through- out this history-making year. We went about our separate tasks in earnest, determined to do our very best. Our first difficult task was the selection of an appropriate theme. When we came upon the words, We are shaped and fashioned by what we love, we knew we had found it! With love in our hearts, we began to evaluate things that we had heretofore taken for granted. We knew that our school had played a more important role in the shaping of our lives than we had ever realized. From year to year our teachers had helped us to learn better how to get along with COC others. Early in life we began to value our friendships which, intensified and cherished, have also helped to shape our lives. Our growing sense of duty, pride, and patriot- ism has accented our love for our town and state. We appreciate the privileges granted us by them. Our homes have given us stability. We have learned how to become socially acceptable in them. From birth, our parents have nurtured us and guided us toward worthy citizenship. They have given us all the joys that love can bestow. We have seen, through their unselfishness and sacrifices, their hearts, pure and good. Their love for us and our love for them have helped to shape and fashion us. And finally, we humbly bow to the all-en- veloping love of God. For It is He that hath made us and not we ourselves. Our love of God has shaped the deepest part of our souls and has given us the power to weave our other loves together to make us what we areg for truly, We are shaped and fashioned by what we love. 4751 MARX' EVELYN PARKER Edilw'-ill-Chief Miss LELA AYCOCK Editorial fldiifef' Miss COR.-I BoNb Bzzrizzerr Adriier Miss VIRGINIA KNowIEs Bzrmzerr Adrifer FRANCIS Looms: EAGLES Blzfizzerf Mivfzizgcaf' Qeg Tiff ,1,L,,:. f , ...wavlzzf f 1 KEY CLUB INTERNATIONAL The memhers of the Key Cluh work hard throughout the year to lixe up to their motto XX'e Build. This is a familiar phrase which is anticipated from month to month. Everyone awaits the arrival of the paper with enthusiasm and the hope that his name will appear in this edition. Under the supervision of Miss Mary Elder, the news is gathered, the pictures are snapped, and the features, editorials, columns, and stories are written. The newspaper then begins to take shape in the form of the dummy. After being proofread, the dummy is sent to the printers. Soon, the galley sheet returns, and again, work begins for the staff in the final proofreading of the newspaper. The paper is sent for the hnal printing and returns in the form that we know and love best, our Rtldffflgfdlll. The Izzlcffllgllllll represents us in our school life. The club includes all juniors and seniors who are interested in becom- ing teachers. Many of the activities of the club include: a joint meeting with the Atlantic Christian College chapter, a Christmas dinner meet- ing, Mr. Willard's talk on Teaching As A Career, ordering catalogues from dihcerent colleges in North Carolina, visiting other schools, and observing classes. A line in the F.T.A. pledge expresses the goal towards which every future teacher aspires: The good teacher requires physical ability, mental vigor, moral discrimination, wholesome personality, helpfulness, knowledge, and leadership. Our Student Council sponsors projects that will improve our school, community and nation. Some of their many and varied enterprises are promoting Homecoming Tag Day and furnishing the sponsors for the game, supporting donations to Radio Free Europe, selecting and sending get-well cards to shut-in students and teachers, ln the spring Scrub- It-l'p week, when students wielding mops, rags, and buckets compete for the cleanest homeroom, offers a bit of the competitive spirit to the spice of life and the school environment improves. The Council sponsors the faculty-student basketball game when the faculty women play the girls of the Student Council and the faculty men play the Monogram boys. Students look forward every year to the celebration of Sadie Haw- kins Day--the time for the Daisy Maes to chase the L'il Abners, and they are delighted with the dance which climaxes the clay. Election time comes in the spring and the campaign managers burn the midnight oil, preparing for campaign stunts. Then election day arrives with the bellow of speeches, blast of brass bands and flash of posters. Students go to the auditorium at lunch to cast their ballots and await impatiently to learn who their next year's leaders will be. EL CIRCULO ESPANOL Once each month, our Spanish Club members meet to further their knowledge of the Spanish speaking coun- tries. XY'ith Mrs. Kathleen Patterson as adviser, El Circulo Espanol learns much of the customs, clothing, climate, and geography of the Latin American countries. Programs are presented about different places each month. Besides its regular meetings the Spanish Club holds a Christmas Party, and attends the annual banquet held by Spanish Clubs in this district. This club was organized in 1953. lts purpose is to give students from all the high school grades an op- portunity to express their loyalty to ole Charlie Coon by participating in its activities. Under the supervision of Miss Knowles, sell- ing programs at the home football games has become an annual project of the Boosters. This year, before the Wiliiiington football game, a homecoming parade was planned and sponsored by the members to arouse school spirit. The day of the Raleigh game found the Boosters earnestly staging a successful tag day. Also the club held a dance in the school gym after the Raleigh basketball game, which was chaperoned by the advisers, Miss Stanton and Miss Cline, and other members of the faculty. This club helps to shape and fashion the levels of Wilson students around the school which they love. lfi M. ,.,,,, G .,,T.Il,. 'N 5-1 3,73 , T. W.: wr 1 4 v . f 2 ' - 2 5 'V 1 V 1: 5 x .. 4 'ff f . Forty-one students make up our choir which brings to us here at Charles L. Coon, joy and happiness in song. This year the choir is under the direction of Miss Ruth Moore, and with her guidance they have sung the wonderful music that we love so well. They sing at our annual Thanksgiving and Christmas chapel Oyff 71101123 can? y programs and at public meetings. This year in addition to these programs, they sang for the National Federation of Music Clubs. Sacred songs, well known songs of the day, and many classical numbers are included in their reper- toire. Whether the song is I'll Walk With God, or A Whale of a Tale, it is sung with great feeling and enthusiasm. The choir, through music, gives us many of the joys that money can't buy. THE VARSITY BAND is a glorious sight as it marches down the street to the strains of martial music. With high-stepping majorettes and drum major leading it, the Varsity Band is quite well known wherever it goes. This year our band is clad in beautiful new uniforms of familiar blue and gold. These outstanding uniforms are donned with pride by one hundred and ten sophomores, juniors, and seniors. No matter if it is a parade under red and green Christmas lights, a half-time show on a wind- swept football field, or in a hot auditorium, our Varsity Band is always there adding color and spirit to the occasion. Beginning in September with long, tiring hours of drilling on the playing field behind the school building, the band is constantly marching and playing through the year. Patiently directed by Mr. liller, the band has become an institution within itself. Being in the band is regarded as an honor by every musit student in Charles L. Coon High School. Our school and town are splendidly represented by the Varsity Band. XIIENIBIERS B 'kk J -Xnthon Ci Barbour E Barbour J Barbour J, . .- . ew. . . V. ,. i . . . , . . , Barbour, D. Barfielcl. J. With Mr. Eller always ready to lend a helping hand, its members quickly learn about their instru- ments and how to play them well. Much time is spent practicing scales, basic rhythms, and all the fundamentals of music. Then one day they play their tirst number as a group. It may be only a simple song like Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, but to these eager musicians it is as thrilling as a full symphony. They play better and better as the year goes on, and at the end of the year they also participate in the Annual Music Concert. Now they can look forward to becoming members of the Junior Band. Ole daddy luck slipped out on Wilson when they visited the Capital City. Missing an extra point in the closing minutes, the Cyclones bowed 7-6 to the Raleigh Caps. A jack- in-the-box, by the name of Kinston, popped out and surprised the Cyclones to a 27-0 win in the Red Devils' favor. After the unwelcome visit by the Red Devils, Wilson was once again on the road, this time, the guest of Durham. If an almost touchdown had counted, Wilson would have had an easy victory but due to misfortune, Wilson was unable to push over the goal line, but came very close several times. After a terrific battle, the Cycs yielded 7-0. Fayetteville, host to the Cyclones and their supporters, was very gracious to us Wilsoni- 7 ans, giving us our fourth victory, 22-0. From the Port City came a heavy and victorious team seeking victory. The Wilmington Wildcats' wish came true when they took home with them a 13-0 victory, but not without a struggle. After the setback by Wilmington, Coach Rogers piloted his fighting Cycs to a great 44-0 win over the Panthers in Greenville. just hve minutes more-only live minutes more-and the Wilson Cyclones would have won over the Rocky Mount Blackbirds for the second consecutive year and would have been able to keep the Shelton Looms Trophy for another year. But time ran out on the Cycs, who were slow starting and were forced to yield 26-19. The season ended up just as Coach Rogers had predicted, 5 wins, and 5 defeats, the best season since 1950. Next de- feating Goldsboro 21-14, and Fayetteville 6-0, the juclones again defeated Goldsboro 20-6. Stopping Kinston and Raleigh, 20-6 and 19-6 respectively, the juclones ended a very successful season by tieing Rocky Mount 7-7. The juclones were coached by Mr. Dickens who did an outstanding job. Many of the junior Varsity boys saw a great deal of Varsity action. With all of this taken into consider- ation the Cyclone future looks very bright. This team was started by Coach Rogers in 1954, in order to give eighth and ninth grade boys who were not old or big enough to play junior Varsity football and were too old to play city league midget football, a chance to play football under a capable instructor. In its two years of action on the gridiron, they have lost only one game and that was to Daniels High of Raleigh. The juclones, opening game was an easy 34-7 victory over Rocky Mount. The Whirlwinds defeated Raleigh 14-O in the first game, and then bowed 20-12 in the second game. The young Whirlwinds stamped the Goldsboro team 39-6 and 42-7 in the two tilts. A safety gave the Wilson Junior High team a 2-O win over a powerful Kinston team. This new team has proved a great boon to both the coaches and the boys. Ffrif mzzx' D. Wfalston, J. XX'ilson, B. The Clycs knocked off three non-confer- ence foes, Wfashington 60-51, North Durham 70-64, and Wfashington again 49-47 to open the 1955-56 season. The Cyclones then made their bid in the non-conference Tobaccoland Tournament and finished second after winning over New Bern 70-42 and Goldsboro 70-67, but losing in the finals to Rocky Mount 70-63. In a return match the Cycs again defeated North Durham 65-58. The first conference game of the season was with Durham and the Clycs were forced to bow 64-48. The Cyclones quickly recovered from this loss by romping over Fayetteville 60-56. The Wfilson lads yielded to Rocky Mount 66-57 and Xlifilmington 65-44 before trouncing Goldsboro 69-59. The Cycs pulled a great upset by beating Raleigh 61-57. The Cycs chalked up another victory by romping Fayetteville 74-64. A three game losing streak followed, first to Rocky Mount 62-44, second to Durham 52-51, third to Wfilmington 66-60 in an overtime. Ending the losing streak, Wilsora stopped Goldsboro 54-52 but fell short to Raleigh 60-57. The Cyclones had a successful season by landing fifth place in the Eastern AAA Conference with a 5-7 con- ference record and a 9-7 all games record, MEMBERS: Lcff In 17,qZvf.' T. Fish, li. Seate, H. After the gradu- ation of seven of his stars and the ineligibility of four others, he was left with only two lettermen. Many thought the chances for the freshman and sophomore laden team were very few, but the season turned out surprisingly well. After three setbacks, the Cyclones started rolling. Tying Goldsboro 11-11, and defeating Rocky Mount, Durham, and Fayetteville 10-4, 7-5, and 20-11 respectively, the Cyclones were finally stopped by Wilmington 14-2. Losing a close 17-15 tilt to Raleigh, the Cyclones went on to defeat Goldsboro 7-3 and then bowed in their last three games to end the season with 4 wins, 8 defeats, and 1 tie.
