VENTH GRAD HR NFTl,Ffr1L Q. 1' ff 1 ,: T , ff Sir , SEVENTH and EIGHTH GRADE SNAPS Mr. Slavin, a seventh grade teacher, super- vises the production of a very unusual play entitled Visitors from Space. ln the top picture, the cast, dressed for their parts, is shown discussing the success of their per- formance. Each year before Christmas, the P. T. A. sponsors the annual Christmas Card Sale for the seventh and eighth grades. A prize is given to the students who sell the greatest number of boxes. Nliss Knowles is shown talking with this year's winners, R. Parker, Walsttin, J. Maclntosh, G. E. Nlinschew. Another interesting phase of sub-freshman life is that of actual work. But Nliss Dees pro- vides her students with a new and different way of accomplishing this. In their study of science and natural resources, they complete a frieze denoting the various natural re- sources which we get from our soil. Mrs. Stewart's seventh grade also has charge of an assembly program, a T. V. Variety Show . Both backstage and on-stage they give everyone the true impression of happi- ness. Especially enjoyable to the audience are the Grow-All Babies - sponsored by the Crow-All Milk Co. Again we see Mr. Slavin's students during a rehearsal of their chapel program. The scenery seems to be very fragile and mysteri- 01.15. Students in the sub-freshman group take a Reading Achievement Test. Mrs. Capps and lylrs. Overman are shown monitoring the test which is being given in the library. Miss Berry's seventh grade students find much amusement and pleasure in producing their own version of the long-loved story of Tom Sawyer. From these snaps of the activities of the seventh and eighth grades, we realize that even the sub-freshmen are well on their way to finding in their school life true happiness. 8 1 x , 1 Stmfeuts gutlzer IIVUIHILI tlze 12115 as the Clzeerf H. WORK ENDED. .STILL SHADOWED. . CONSCIENCE-STRICKEN Late in the night we have struggled to present to the student hody a hook that we would consider an over-all picture of our ,54-'55 school year. VVe have laughed our way through certain pages and tram ped hack only to find them faded with our tears. Our nerves have grown tense and our eyes sore. VVe have lost sleep, weight, friends, and as Nancy says, our senses. We have struggled with time, schedules, photographers, people, and NVEATI IFR! lrlazel ruined our first picture schedule, influenced all the others, and stopped the sale of ads. As for usfthc editorial staff-our grammar has improved hut our patience has disappeared, hlorning, noon, and night we have lived the Cocooisi, and now, like the moth, we are ready to emerge from Room I5 with a hook which we hope you will treasure all your lives. THE 1954 SEASON The I95-I edition of the Cyclones verified the old adage that If at first you dont succeed, try and try again. After a fi-O first game defeat by Creenville, they started to gain mo- mentum. The second game with VVashington ended in a scoreless tie and Coldsboro handed the Cycs their second loss. And then on September 2-I, the Raleigh Capitals came to Wilson and it was in this game that the Cyclone offense gained much needed confidence. Even though they bowed by a score of 20-13, they left the impression that better days were ahead. Losses to Kinston and Durham followed and a cancellation caused by I Iurricane Hazel omitted Henderson from the sched- ule. The two-weclx lay-off proved disastrous as the Cyclones sustained a I5-O Homecoming defeat by Fayetteville. Against VVilmington, they found themselves outweighed man for man by a heavily favored Wildczit squad. Although the outcome of the game remained in doubt until the final minutes, the weight and depth of the port city crew proved to be a deciding factor as the Cycs toolt a 20-I3 loss. hlud and cold weather in Rocky IX'Iount revived memories of last year's contest against the Blaclxbirds, but that was the only resemblance. The spirit, hustle and teamwork of thc blue and gold warriors from VViIson accounted for the over- wht-Iming victory. Because of the keen rivalry between the two schools for the Shelton Looms Trophy, the ISHS-I Season was considered a success. VVILSON O WILSON O , VVILSON O , WILSON I3 . 'If Clark, Qzmrierlmckg Murphv, Fulllmclc THE JUCLONES. A record of two wins and six losses was compiled by the ,Iuclones during the 1954 football season. Raleigh and Goldsboro handed the -lucs two defeats apiece while Fayetteville came out on top in the only game played between the two teams. Rocky Mount bowed to the junior Varsity in Wilscin but got revenge when the squads met later in the season. Although this overall record is not impressive, the spirit of these boys was outstanding. Several times during the year the luclones went into the game without the services of a few regulars who had been promoted to the varsity. Gaps in the line and backfield were filled with boys small in stature but with plenty of spirit and intestinal fortitude and though sometimes outscored were never outfought. THE WHIRLWINDS. A Junior High team coached by Irv Dickens created a stir among followers of Charles L. Coons' football fortunes this year. The eighth and ninth graders comprised what Coach Dickens declared to be the best-looking bunch of youngsters he's seen at the local high school in years. Five wins and no losses to teams from Rocky Mount, Golds- boro, and Raleigh rewarded the efforts of our hustling griddcrs who finally came through in fine style with scores of 20-O, 14-O, 31-6, and 20-O. Prospects have brightened considerably what appears to be a preview of some fine football squads in the future. A few years ago, our city recreation department started the midget football pro- gram in VVilson. After several lean seasons, the midget program has begun to pay off. This defeat gave the Cycs a determi- nation to win that brought them some exciting last minute victories. After a 66-51 loss to Wfilmington, in their first eastern AAA game, VVi1son moved into a tie for third place in the conference standings as they posted a 61-49 victory over the Goldsboro Earthquakes. Our first conference home game furnished us with a 64-53 win over Fayetteville. P. Blake racked up thirty- one points, with T. Jordan and F. Deans following with twelve and ten points respectively. Raleigh 11igh's State Champs ran up against some stiff local opposition with S. Yionoulis and -1. lladge playing one of their finest games. The Cycs missed a chance for a tie in the last fifteen seconds and took a disappointing 60-57 loss. The local cagers got off to a good start against Rocky Mount and staved off a last quarter Blackbird threat and rallied to a 49-40 decision. F. Deans continued his jinx over Rocky Mount by grabbing twenty rebounds and T. Rrandon was outstanding on defense- Going on a road trip to Durham, the varsity cagers trailed all the way ti11 the last quarter. Leading by one point, the Bulldogs started a freeze and, with only seconds remaining, tried to clinch the game with a lavup. 1t was no good, and VVi1son's P. Blake got the rebound and passed to F. Deans who whipped it back to Rlakc. The gun went off as Paul arched a one-handed push shot that swished the net in an exciting 45-44 victory for the Cyclones. VVi1mington tripped the locals in the following home game, but VVi1son got revenge by edging the winless Goldsboro Earthquakes 52-50. Raleigh was hitting on all cylinders in the Cyclones' next meeting. Subs for both teams saw considerable action with A. Thomas, A. Wheeler, C. Griffin, and W. Lee standing out for VVi1son as they suffered a 66-40 defeat. Another last second 41-39 victory in Fayetteville and a 41-38 win from Durham assured the Cycs a place in the State tournament. Rocky Mount, with no chance to get into the top four, was relieved of all pressure and posted a 52-43 victory in the last game for the Wilstiii squad. The 1951 season was the first phase of the program and considering the loss of seventeen lettermen from last year's championship team, the overall record proves that Wilsoii can still hold its own even during a lean season. Using his few remaining regu- lars as the backbone of the squad, Coach Irv Dickens developed a smooth-running ball club and by substituting his younger boys freely, gave them much valuable experience. Fayetteville bowed to Wilson midway through the season by a score of 7-6 and from that point on the Cyclones went on a five- game losing streak.
