ELLER Page Nina HAT a warmth of fellowship have we shared in walking together with friends and teachers at Charles L. Coon High School! What cheerful comrades have we been for each other! YVhat elements of happiness have we found here matching ideals and standards, exploring new fields of knowledge or nature's beauty, or making our lives richer with new friends. As underclassmen, we walked boldly down the visible pathways that led from classroom to auditorium, from school to stadium or courthouse for pep rallies, or from the local drugstore or movies or church, and home again. And the ways were familiar, and the paths were not new. But now that the top step of our high school life is in clear view, we look ahead with trepidation in search of the invisible pathways of a more responsible life. Together we will walk away from Charles L. Coon High School, our haven for many years. With our leaders, help wc will decide which new pathways to venture upon. There will be footprints of those whoive gone before to guide us, and we will leave our imprints for others to follow. into a new world which lies before us, we will go to establish a good life. llfljafling jogem Mn. You might know that they are Key Club boys looking for another project! Since it was first organized in 1946, the Key Club has been dedicated to serv- ing the school and community. Though the club has some social functions and good times, its main purpose is to render service. even if it takes hard work. Striv- ing to seek and develop the activities that will be of the greatest value for the great- est number, the Key Club is a builder of both leadership and character through responsibilities given to each member for different projects. It has become a tradition that the club sponsor the annual toy drive and the VVhite Christmas program within the school. The members practice being good hosts at parties given for the faculty and student leaders in December, their parents in March, and the Kiwanians in April. They have also helped to organile a new club in Elm City, our neighboring town. This year the club has completed over sixty worthwhile projects. The club recently added to their long list of awards both the achievement and attendance prizes at thc Carolinas District Convention. Mr. Wlillard is the adviser of both the Kev and Kcvette Clubs. That is a Kevette Club pin, came the reply. VVhat is the Keyette Club? asked the girl. Tell me about it. VVell, said the upperclassman, the Keyette Club is a service club which was organiled in I9-18 and has spent its years in promoting projects and activities for the betterment of the school and commun- ity. This year the local Kiwanis Club is sponsoring the Keyettes. Visiting the coun- ty home on Sundays, working with the VVilson Kennel Club in sponsoring a clog show, and giving donations to the Red Cross and Community Chest are some of the club's community projects. Some of the school projects have been to sponsor the girls' intramural basketball teams, to honor their mothers at a tea, and to help the Masketcers by sponsoring the concession stand at their various plays. The members of this organization rank in the upper third of their classes and are selected from the sophomore, junior, and senior classes on a basis of leadership, scholarship, and character. Gee, l hope l can be a Keyette mem- ber next year, exclaimed the freshman. Members arc, left to right, top to bot- tom: Allen, E. Baltzegar, P. Barnes, G. Bass, Benton, A. Blount, Boyette, C. Brooks. Our athletic program draws crowds of both participants and spectators who, through this fun, develop a love for clean competitive sport. How to win and, more important, how to lose are lessons learned well by the students at Charles L. Coon. Projects! Meetings! Community Work! Our clubs and organizations provide opportunities for us to render greater service to others. And we are thankful for them. These extracurricular activities add a spice to our lives which we all need and love, but, in reality, they make up the smallest part of living together. Many common place things we take for granted, such as trips to the locker, standing in the lunch line, studying in the library, voting for our leaders, just attending classes, and doing the daily tasks which form the nucleus of our school life. i oofin 1 uact uvon tie ianiness tie sac ness ie tu ies we ver- Lkglll 1111 ,l l ,tl it llt 'ormec ie ac iievemen s earnet iv mart ant uorinv wor ', anc ie Goa s l l,tl l t llll l ll D k lrlgl left for others to attain, we see the had and good blend into a sweet melody of everyday's experience in . . . saving .s7ogef!ze , A I.
