Page Fort v-fi Ve WE LOOK BACK Vlle, the seniors of Charles L. Coon lligh School, have reached that point where we Inav look back reminiscentlv upon the happiest vears of our lives, vears of fellowship in studying, working, and plaving together. High school first saw us as livelv, vet inconspicuous, freshmen. Hager to make our presence felt, we wholeheartedly entered into school activitv. The band, iunior cheerleading, iunior football and basketball, and intramural sports found manv of us added to each group. Vlle were indeed proud of the bovs from our class who lcd the .luclones through an undefeated season, and prouder of our mightv Cvclones, who captured the state AA championship. Truly delighted were the few girls from our class among the group forming the first Kcvette Club. Five bovs represented us in the internationallv recognized Kev Club of that vear. Having presented an achievement surpassed bv none in the United States and Canada, our Kev Club was awarded the Dr. Fox plaque for outstanding service. Our hand made an A rating in the Eastern Carolina band contest, and a good showing in the state contest. Certainlv our sophomore vear in high school found each one of us able to sav that, along with Ulvsses of old, I am a part of all that I have met. The following vcar we had become a name -the junior Class, Our officers were Harrv Yarbrough, john lYIoore, Ann VVebb, and Malphus Bradburv. VVe all found places which htted us appropriately in school activities. blost important of our goals for the vear was an unfor- gettable lunior-Senior. The all-out selling of tags, the decoratrng of the gvmnasium and cafeteria, the excitement prior to the evening, questions evervwhere . . . Then came Honor Dav and that solemn portion of the program wherein we took over the vacated senior positions. Wlith vouthful vigor and swelling hearts we moved into our final VCHI' aetivelv and enthusiastieallv engaged, striving to mold a fitting climax in our last whirl through high school. Soon we began to look around for those proven worthv of becoming our leaders. and we chose Nickv Lazio, Bobbv Sharpe, Ann Beamon, VVillie Vl'oodard and Kenneth nlattox as souls that have toiled and wrought and thought with us as our class officers. According to precedent of long vears' standing. we knew that the one big task of the veai' would be producing the vearbook, the Cocooisx, and earlv in the vear we started raising monev. Never can we forget nights in the concession stands fishing pop from the icv water and the mornings after, gathering bottles, bright and earlv. Nor can we forget the iov and responsibilitv we felt in working eo-operativelv to sponsor the flinnant Review and to produce the big show, Stunt Night. All times we have cniovedn . . . velling at pep meetings at the courthouse, football at the Municipal Stadium, basketball games at the Atlantic Christian College gvmnasium, chartered train and bus trips to games and conferences, going to fellowship meetings on Sundav night, helping in communitv proieets . . . ushering at and attending concerts and programs of our communitv eivie organi- zations . . . singing Christmas Carols, laughing in the Citv Librarv when we should be studving. writing themes and tvping timeftests. loafing on the front steps after school hours, wearing caps and gowns on Commencement Sundav. The Council conducts many activities during the year. It operates a lost and found bureau, sells tags, and operates a concession stand at games. During the year, the Council sponsors many school parties and dances, one of which, the Sadie Hawkins dance, has become traditional. A Cood Will Tour to Rocky Mount is staged each year in the interest of promoting a feel- ing of friendly rivalry between the two schools. Both schools look forward to this occasion as a Red-Letter Day. At Christmas the Council plays Santa Claus to poor families by filling boxes with food and toys for them. The Council conducts a political rally in the spring and elects ofhcers for the following year. 'llhrough the capable leadership of Mr. Eller, faculty adviser, the Student Council has had a very successful year in its varied activities. CO-CAPTAINS BILLY CEARDNER The co-captains of the successful 1949 football team, Malphus Bradbury and Billy Gardner, were outstanding in every game during the regular season, and in the Shrine Bowl game were standouts on ol- fense and defense. Gardner made the long- est touchdown gallop of the day-a run of 73 yards. Both players were selected on the All-Eastern team, and made strong bids for All-State honors. RESUME ln a way the Charles L, Coon Iligh School football team is like the month ol' March: it dances into the season like a lamb and roars out like Ll lion. Knowing that the Cyclones would have a good line, formed mostly by seniors, and a last backlield, local fans were almost certain they would be in the thick of the fight for eastern honors. After a hardffought encounter with highly rated Charlotte Central, everyone was well pleased with the Cyc's ability, even though they were on the short end of a l-V13 score. - The following' week a good crowd went out to Municipal Stadium to see the Cyclones defeat a strong team from Kinston High, but the Red Devils surprised everyone but the visiting fans by defeating VVilson 13-6. Kinston later won the state Class A title. The outlook darkened considerably when a dark horse squad from Coldsboro stopped the Cyclones again, 13-6, Then. however, came the game with Mt. Airy, which usually starts the team on the right path, the Cyclones played an excellent game and upended the visitors I9-15. The Cyclones then hir the roadug defeated Raleigh 7-6, lost a mud battle, 12-6, to Durham, who copped the state AA championship, and swallowed Fayette- ville, 6-O, on the way back home. 'lihe Vllildcats of VVilminvton at this uoint in the rv l season were strong contenders for the eastern title. but that meant nothing to the Cyclones, who played a magnificent game in sweeping past the contenders 7-6. The VVilson-Rocky Mount game was, as usual, a very colorful affair as well as one of the most thrilling games of the season. The Cyclones scored two touchdowns in the first half on a 40-yard run hy Gardner and a beautiful pass play from Lyles to hlattox. Rocky hlount came hack strong in the second half to score on a run hy lXlczXdams, but the Wlilson defense fought oil a second threat and se! cured the yictory. The Shelton Looms 'liophy pictured at the right was retained hy Vvilson hy virtue ol' their win. A fast, well-balanced backfield behind a heavy but slow line presented the prob- lems and Wilsoii lost the first two games to Goldsboro 19-O and Rocky Mount 13-2. With an improving line opening the holes for the backs, the Iuelones came back to conquer Goldsboro and Rocky Mount in return engage- ments, 20-12, 14-13 respectively. ln the hnal en- counter of the season the juclones roared to a decisive 19-O victory over a heavy Raleigh squad. Although moving up to the varsity is a big jump, several members of the junior team show promise of being good prospects to bolster the Cyclones next year. lklanv of the freshmen and sophomores who form the juclones are of the size and weight for varsity action but are lacking in experience. The junior team is formed essentially to teach bovs the fundamen- tals of football and to develop the qualities of good sportsmanship, the record reveals that the jucloncs have achieved this aim. 'lihe Cvclones were easily the shortest team in the liastern AA Conference: however, all of their opponents learned to respect their last, nexcr-gix'e-up brand ol' play. The Cycs entered the State AA Tournament at Durham in a tie for second place with a respectable record of eight wins and four losses. ln the tournament, the team met defeat in the hrst round of play at the hands ol' Burlington Iligh, a team that the Cycs had beaten twice during the regular season. fit fm. 411.2 6 K 'nl NBA, W K x A 'Lid' yi 1 f V, Jil'- A 1 fl JUNIOR BASKETBALL Playing against several ol' the hetter county high school teams ancl the junior squads ol' the larger schools, the 1949-50 .luclones postccl a recorcl ol' nineteen wins anal thirteen losses. As the close of the schedule approached, the Cyclones and the Wilmingtciii Wildczits were tied for hrst place in the Eastern Conference. ln the last game of the season, the Wildcaits defeated VVilson, 76, to clinch the title.
