One sees him everywhere-on the campus, in the cafeteria, in the gym, and in the office, if necessary. lle will lend a willing ear to students and teachers alike, wherever they find him. lle is sympathetic and understanding, kind and patient, a friend to everyone, and a guide to many. OF course, the seniors feel that Mr. VVillard belongs especially to them, as he came to the high school as principal when they were freshmen, and they have braved the storm together. hlemorics of Charles L. Coon lligh School will ever be found in memories of him! little things like his standing in the halls during the change of classes, the Winsome smile at the close of day, waving a friendly hello from a distance, being stern, if he has to be. l'Ve, the seniors, will never forget our Mr. Willzi1'd. We, who started out as little caterpillars have emerged from our cocoons as full grown butterflies, ready to make our hrst flight into the world. The year 1945 saw us hrmly footed as freshmen and brought to us a wonderful new principal, Mr. Willard, who helped guide us over the rocky paths always traveled by new students. No woe that we suffered as freshmen, though, could subdue our spirits for long, for we were an enthusiastic group and entered whole-heartedly into al school activities. Happy were we when some of our classmates became junior cheerleaders, band members, and junior football and basketball players. Many of our girls took part, too, in the intramural sports, and continued this practice all through the school years. As we entered into our sophomore year in '46, we realized that there lay a rough road ahead of us, and we seriously settled down to our school work. We were proud of our sophomore boys elected as members to the Key Club in the spring. The mighty Cyclones soared to state championship during this school year, and our basketball learns made a good showing also. VVhen we returned to school in the fall of '47, we took upon ourselves the honors and responsibilities of juniors. For the Hrst time we met together as a class and elected our oflicers, who led us through the year to the completion of many profitable vrojects. Rom Llewellyn served as our capable president, Pat Patteson, as vice-president, j oy Allgood, as secretary, and Robert Deans, as treasurer. The most important project of the year, of course, was the -lunioreSenior. VVC worked hard all the year making money to defray the expenses for this occasion, and when the night came we were happy that we had done our best. During the year the Keyette Club was organized and nine of our girls were chosen members. Some of our junior boys were chosen as replacements in the Key Club. The achievement record presented by this club to the international Key Club con- vention at lklemphis, Tennessee, took first honors and won for us the coveted Dr. Fox award and international recognition from other clubs. Pride surged in us when our boys and their sponsors returned bearing trophies and a huge Hag presented by Canada. The football team of this year included many valuable members from the ranks of the junior class, who made up a large portion of the basketball and baseball rosters. That season produced the best basketball team, also, ever to represent our school. They fought to the Hnals of the state Class AA tournament, only to be edged out by a towering High Point team. ln the spring, the band made a very good rating at the district contest in Creenville, which concluded an outstanding year for the high school. ln September of '48, we reached the climax of our high school career. We were now proud seniors, willing to make a record that would stand as a memorial to the Class of '-19. The Student Council, with Rom Llewellyn, president, Len Brooks, vice-president, Betty Clyde Hill, secretary, and Bronna Brooks, treasurer, assumed the duties of guiding the ship of state. Len Brooks, president, and Battle Pittman, vice-president, Eulalia Barnhill, secretary, Roy Holdford, treasurer, and Paul Dew, sergeant-at-arms, led the Senior Class. The Keyette Club and the Kev Club led the school in many worthwhile projects. The hlonogram Club for 1948-'49 was one of the outstanding groups. Our football team fought hard, showed a good spirit, and partially compensated for their losses of former members, by defeating Rocky Mount and winning the coveted Shelton Looms trophy. We were also blessed with hard hghting basketball and baseball teams. The band, as usual, co-operated fully with all school and civic affairs, and represented us well at all public performances. We, the Class of '49, stand ready now for the long awaited diplomas. We have worked hard this year, and in the past, and have had much fun doing it. As we go on to bigger and better things we shall never forget our days at Charles L. Coon, for many of us, perhaps the four happiest years of our lives. We'x'e conquered the hill of knowledge, VVe've come to the end of this climb, VVe've placed our feet in the fresh new earth, Leaving prints in the sands of time. So turn your eyes to the distant hills And place your foot straight and sure, And lift your head in the golden sun, And breathe the air, fresh and pure. They're rivht when they say that we are young, And still right when they say we're scared, But we know that our school has taught us well, ' And were facing the challenge prepared. It is a modification of the old form of part-time co- operative training arrangement to serve the smaller cities. Most of the skilled occupations in Vllilson need onlv a few trained workers vearlv. Students in our high schools desire a greater varietv of training than can be afforded bv the schools. Diversified occupational training meets the needs of the occupations and satisfies the varietv of training wanted bv students in a better wav than anv other method vet devised. Witli great pride we watch our varsity band members-whether they are marching on the held or sitting on the concert stage. Their beautiful blue and gold uniforms add color and splendor to any occasion. At a football game, it's the bandis opening with The Star Spangled Banner, and their tireless playing throughout the game, that gives us the true spirit. They participate in all school and civic activities, and never hesitate to serve wherever they can. This year, the band performed at the Duke-Wake Forest game with a number of other bands. They willingly marched in the cold, brisk air of December, for the annual Christmas parade. They practice, practice and practice to be ready for the District Contest Festival, when they travel to Greenville. lmagine that we are in the auditorium, and the band is ready to give one of its many concerts during the year. The director, Mr. Eller, raises his baton, and we hear the first strains of the exciting march, His Honor. Then we hear several concert pieces: Colden Clow, Panis Angelicusf' and Midnight Sun. As the last chord dies out, we realize that this band deserves the greatest of credit, not only for its musical ability, but for its willingness to lend a helping hand wherever it is needed. FUUTBALL RESUME At the beginning of the season, Coach lVladdcn was faced with the prob- lem of rebuilding the football team. Only three men remained from last year's first string team. The material Coach Madden had to work with was capable but inexperienced. Wilson won from a versatile VVashington team, 7-O, lost to Goldsboro and Raleigh in that order, and then won from a highly regarded Mount Airy team, later Glass A State Champions. The next three games were lost to Durham, 28-7, Fayetteville, 35-O, and VVilmington, 48-6. The statistics in the Fayetteville battle show that the game was closer than the score might indicate. The next game was the annual classic between VVilson and Rocky Mount. The team showed amazing teamwork and won a terrific game, 13-6. They not only won the game but also the beautiful Shelton Looms Trophy presented by Sidney Blumenthal Go., lnc., for the promotion of good sportmanship. This trophy was presented for the first time and will remain in the school until game time next year. The team that wins it ten times first will keep it permanently. The next game was with a highly favored Parker High team of Green- ville, S. G., and again the team showed the much improved teamwork to win handily, 19-7. The last game of the season was lost to a power-laden Central High team of Charlotte. UN THE DIAMUNU Another banner year was enjoyed by the Cyclone baseballers in 718. Ten straight opponents were swept aside before the Cyclones tasted defeat in their last game of the season. By then the Eastern Conference AA Cham- pionship was copped and a chance at the State Championship was earned. However, the Cyclones were defeated by Gastonia in the play-offs for the championship. In the first game VVilmington was defeated 7 to 3. This marked the Cyclones' first victory over the VVildcats in 3 years. This accomplishment seemed to give the Cycs the needed punch, and every other school soon fell victim to the locals. The 1949 team will be weakened by the loss of such standouts as Ham Crowder, Spurgeon Speight, Jimmy Zrakas, Virgil Eason, and Dickie Davis. Although hit hard by these graduations, the Cyclones will try to carry on where they left off in '48 Page Eighty-eight l .
