Coon high school was not a great one, but it was a season in which a light and inexperienced team played good, hard football to outshine many of their opponents even if the score was in the other team's favor. When the 1945 season began, the Cyclones had nine lettermen back including four members of the 1944 State Championship first team and five from the 1944 second team. The 1945 eleven was captained by All-Southern tackle, Bobby Hackney, a 195-pound veteran of three years of varsity experience. and Archie Webb, a 165-pound guard holdover from the Championship team. At the ends were Charles Anthony and Spurgeon Speight. The other tackle and guard positions were ably held down by Bernard Matrox and Sidney Switzer, Jimmy Zrakas, a sixty minute man, held down the pivot post. The backfield con- sisted of Jay Clark and Tunney Brooks at the quarter- back positions, while the halfback positions were occupied by Mickey Moore, Clyde Sullivan. Eddie Rabil. and Jimmy Hayes. The fullback position was filled by Robert Overman, weighing only 135 pounds. and Doug Darden. , The Cyclones were crippled from the start of their season by first losing their two starting guards. Marshall Long and Jimmy Womble. and then losing their star halfback. Clyde Sullivan. This made the Cycs turn to passing as their big offensive power and here they were fortunate in having the two best high school passers in the state in Tunney Brooks and Jay Clark. The Wilson team received many honors this past fall. At the close of the season Mickey Moore received the most valuable player award chosen by his own teammates. Bobby Hackney and Jay Clark received bids to play in the North Carolina-South Carolina Shrine All-Star Game at Charlotte. Along with this Hackney also received all-state honors and made the high school all-southern team from his state along with five other high school players. At a banquet given the team by the business men in the city the Cyclones elected as their next year's captains, Tunney Brooks and Jimmy Zrakas. The Cyclones of 1945 won three games, lost six, and tied one. The most important game of the season was with the l.eon Brogden coached Wilmington eleven. The locals won the game easily by a score of 33 to l-l. This could not be called a great season. but all the boys played good ball and with twelve lettermen back for the '46 season. it should be a very successful one. 1945 EOOTBALI. Page Seventy-Iwo BASEBALL---1945 The 1945 baseball season at CLCHS was indeed a successful one with the Cycs winning the eastern championship. Not being able to play Gastonia for the State Championship, due to an ODT ruling, b-oth teams were named Co-Champions of North Carolina. This marked the fourth consecutive year that the Cyclones have been Eastern Class A Champs, and the third year that they have won the State Baseball Championship. With Bennett Flowers, Jay Clark, Herman Vick, Tunney Brooks. and Bud Ruffin back from the 1944 State Champion outfit plus the addition of several American Legion performers on the starting nine, the Cyclones won l5 games and lost 2. The hitting of Jay Clark. Thorp Smith, Herman Vick, and Tunney Brooks added to the great pitching of Big Bennett Flowers, and the fielding abilities of Bud Ruffin, Clyde Sullivan, Charles Anthony, and Eld- ridge Watson, made this indeed a great team. The great hitting of the Cyclone squad was an outstanding factor in the winning of the Championship. The highest batting average in North Carolina Class A Baseball was compiled by Shortstop Jay Clark, who hit a handsome .-ll5. Thorp Smith was close behind with .-lO5, and Tunney Brooks and Clyde Sullivan each hit close to 375. This was really great hitting for high school basef ball players. For their splendid job of winning the CofChampionship -of N. C.. the following players were awarded letters: C a p t a i n Tunney Brooks. Thorp Smith, Bennett Flowers. Bud Ruffin. Jay Clark. Charles Anthony, Clyde Sullivan, Mac Davis, Boisie Barnes, Roland Boyette, Eldridge Watson, Bobby Hackney and Tommy Watson. Man- agers: and Dr. Badie T. Clark, team physician. At the close of the season Bennett Flowers was signed by the Boston Red Sox and pitched in the Class B Piedmont League. He won l'5 games and lost 6 for the season, 19-+5 STATE CHAMPICNS Ptlgt' St'L't'l7Itl - fftrit Tl-IE CLASS PROPHECY OF 1946 Wow! This is a smooth sailing atom plane. Our 1956 model from the Atomic Power Corporation is a real bar- gain. Rabbit Overman, the Atomic magnate, knows his business. Look! There go test pilots Pete Winbourne and Holloway Burgess zooming by in their sleek convertible plane. Incidentally, this is an invention of Jesse Joyner. We should be seeing the White Cliffs soon, but wait, isn't that a raft down here? Gosh. it's Eldridge Watson and Kenneth Lamm--they must have lost their yacht in a poker game. Well, we're over London now, so let's park our job and see what's cooking downstairs. We can drop in on Lady Droopinghaven's private party. Of course you remem- ber her-the former Margaret Rawlings. Upon arriv- ing we recognize Elizabeth Tomlinson and Evelyn Tudor sipping tea-both are now duchesses. Sauntering across the room, whom should we see but Speed Mumford of Scot- land Yard, crawling along behind a huge magnifying glass, with his nose pressed to the fioor. He tells us that he is still working on the case. Who Threw the Whiskey in the Well. The most obvious suspect at the present is the swoon crooner, Spec Dillon. Entertainment is furnished to us by that spotlight trio, The Knottingham Sisters -- Alma Moore, Trudy Riley, and Frankie Llewellyn. After the tea party. our hostess, while having her portrait painted by that famous artist, Vivian Turnmyre, relates to us all of the latest gossip. In this way we learn that there are three new pages in the King's court: namely, Marcelle. Irvin. and Doris Jean. Also. among the late arrivals from America is the vivacious movie actress, Bar- bara Jeffries, who has signed a contract to play in the celebrated new play by H. F, Flowers, Mavis Boyette, and Collette Bartholomew. Tiring of English society, we travel on to Paris. The highlight of our short stay in this city is. The Fashion Premiere of 1956. We are greeted by Charles Anthony, president of Anthony and Sons Modeling Agency. As we take our seats, we are dazzled by the appearance of Betty Brewer in an exotic red bathing suit. Daisy Dixon models an alluring silver mink coat, followed by Rae Harrison in a black and white checked taffeta afternoon dress with matching parasol. Our attention is then drawn to a sequin Spangled gold evening gown modeled by Julia Dew, These are a few of the creations by the talented young designer. Bettye Newton. After the fashion show we stop in for a Pepsi at the extravagant new sidewalk cafe, Harvey's Lunch, owned and managed by Harvey Clayton. Then, once again, we are on our way. After traveling for many miles, we are forced .down in the Libyan desert. There we refuel at Robert Plerces atom filling station. Shortly we find ourselves in Bagdad, city of romance and intrigue. Wandering along the streets we hear familiar music coming from one of the small bazaars. There Helen Grimsley, Virginia Holloman, and Marie Willoughby swoon over a record by Frank Sinatra. croon- er of a decade ago. They are sales girls in Joyce Lewis's antique shop. Farther down the street we run into Barbara Anne Boole and Helen Wheeler, dealers in worn out magic carpets and used cars. Turning a corner we find Thorp 'tAladdin Smith, vigorously rubbing an old brass lamp. Immediately his Geni with the peroxide hair appeared. This is none other than Jean Lester. We also stop for a moment at the royal palace where King Bo Rabil is sitting on his throne. He is fasci- nated by the jitterbugging of Walter Furlong and Monkey Driver, while Curtis Curlin, his faithful attend- ant. continually fans him. As we leave the city, we see a caravan of camels walking across the desert. We are informed that this caravan is part of the freight line owned by Billy Barefoot and Billy Poole. We see Doug Whitley bringing his load of furniture to sell in Bag- dag: Wiley Corbett bringing a new Buick: C. V. Poy- thress bringing a supply of his famous mineral water, Spirits of Toisnot : John Gill bringing wholesale groceries. and Chick Beamon bringing up the rear-e thus our last glimpse of Bagdad is truly a romantic one. As we make our way to India, we see Grady Griffin and Millard Mantooth diving for pearls in the Persian Gulf. They are the chief divers for the Arabian Dehydraded Oyster Company, owned by Margaret Sholar and Juanita Jones. Arriving in Bombay, we stop at the Public Relations Bureau and engage a guide who proves to be Nancy Lucas. On our tour of the city we visit the annual Holy Cow Festival. The main attraction is a thoroughbred white cow from Tom Boswell's modern dairy. Our attention is drawn to a gathering crowd a few yards away. Upon closer inspection we find Marshall Long reclining peace- fully on his bed of nails before going into his weight lifting act. Roland Boyette, a wealthy tourist from America, continually annoys him by throwing crumbs in his bed. We also notice Ada Catherine Brewer and Hazel Collier selling cotton candy to the crowds. Nearby, Val Brooks is employed with charming a snake with his saxophone. Beside him, HHFFY Bateman IS faggihg UD by thrusting flaming torches down his throat. Tiring of the festival, we bump into John Cflfbett- who is Organizing a big hunting expedition. Also, in the expedition is Vernon Morton, who will go along to sketch some wild life in India. Before we leave, we stop at Bess Parris' hot dog stand for a hasty bite to eat. Here we are served one of the latest concoctions by Mary Gray Strickland and Mildred Ruffin, Hot Dog a la Bess. We are startled to see Helen Moskos, the newly appointed ambassadoress to Russia, who is on her way to Moscow. Refreshed, we thus move on for new experiences in Hong- kong. China. Soaring over the Himalayas. we discover a large health resort. the Triple A, under the direction of Audrey Bos- well, Audrey Davis, and Audrey Downing. Being situated on the top of Mt. Everest, we are satisfied that these girls have reached their peak in life and are now sitting on top of the world. We stop next in Hongkong. Seeking entertainment, we hurry to the classiest joint in town, The Diamond Horse- face. The proprietor is that experienced man of society, Ray McFall Lamm, who is the big shot of a very elaborate set up. He is under the constant protection of his private body guard. Wade Saleeby: the club is kept orderly by his two efficient bouncers, Bernard Mattox and Billy Miller, His pretty secretary, Ruth Mercer, handles all of his business for him. As we are seated, the floor show begins. Over in the corner, Tom Hoagy Moore is softly plunking a few pieces on the piano. Next on the program is an enticing dance by Frances Dobbins. As she finishes. our attention is attracted by two cigarette girls, Sarah Ann Williams and Lydia James. After a moment's hesi- tation we decided to buy a package of Kools. After this Archie Webb renders a medley of songs from the old South, accompanied by Dolly Taylor and her all girl orchestra. Among these talented musicians we find Annie Ruth Bailey, Sally Mintz, and Brownie Jones. At the close of the floor show we are served a delicious dinner. The dietitian, Catharine Thomas, plans all of the menus and supervises all cooking for the club. After finishing our meal, we make our exit. Searching for souvenirs, we find a quaint little gift shop. We are surprised to find behind the counter Colev Wilcox and Ruth Hathaway enjoying the fruits of good fortune. Having bought a few trinkets, we leave Hongkong far behind us. On our way across the Pacific, we pass over a small island, on which we see a tall observatory where Don Barnes and Alban Sindler are attempting to calculate the exact width of the equator. Speeding onward, we arrive in Honolulu. As we nre- pare to land, we get a glimpse of Doris Magness, Mar- garet Tyson, and Helen Saleeby dancing on the sand. It seems to be a combination of the Lindy Hop and the Hula. Upon landing, we encounter Dr. Doug Darden, international foot specialist, accompanied by Sara Wal- ston, his head nurse. In the business section we see that Mickey Moore's pool parlor, The Twin Palms. and Bobby Hackney's pawn shop are side by side. We then make a tour of the large pineapple canning fag- torv which is under the supervision of Verta Mae Eason and Bettv Lou Hodges. At the close of our tour we then gay Aloha to picturesque Hawaii and are homeward ound. Soon we can see the shores of the Western coast of our native land. As we near San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge comes into view. Flying under this great structure, we wave to Claude Smith, who is the keeper of the bridge. Anxious to reach the East, we flv non-ston from Frisco to New York. Landing at La Guardia Field we meet Edith Wiggs who is now a hostess for the Pan- American Air Lines. On our way to the stadium at Ebbets Field to see the last game of the World Series, we pass the extravagant pent house belonging to the wife of the late millionaire J. Pinpoint Morgue. She is the former Elizabeth Holdford. In the business district we pass the Empire State Building, where the secretaries. Mabel Ellis and Daisy Howell, of the ninety-fifth and ninetv-sixth floors, respectively, are engaged in a con- versation while leaning out of the windows. Reaching the stadium, we hurry inside to find that Jay Clark, short stop for the Brooklyn Dodgers, has just hit a home run. Immediately Bennett Flowers, ace right-hander for the Boston Red Sox, is sent in as a relief pitcher. He is thrown a new ball by the umpire, Geraldine Ferrell. Thus, after our long journey around the globe we are satisfied to settle back in our seats and enjoy America's favorite sport. History of the Class of 1946 The year 1940, a year of doubt and indecision, saw our arrival at Charles I.. Coon High School just as the world was being torn asunder by aggression. Our minds were clouded and confused as we entered a new phase of our life. As our nation cast aside all doubts and gained a clear vision after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, we in filling out our first elective slips. broke from our uncertainty into understanding. As our freshman year rolled around, we found ourselves participating in various drives and rallies to further the cause of the Allies. With the organization of the Victory Corps we began to feel the nearness of the war and the effect it would have upon our school life. Thus we had begun to work together and to prepare ourselves for harder blows to come. Hy the time we reached our sophomore year, the war had reached its climax, and we had gained confidence as a nation and self-assurance as a class: for our school had led the state in the sale of war bonds and stamps. All, however, was not work: for our football team won the eastern champion- ship: and our baseball team went on to greater glory by winning the state championship. 1944-at last we were- juniors! We- elected officers and lost ourselves in the planning of thc Junior-Senior Banquet. For the first time in several years we decided not to have a Christmas Carnival but instead to sell football tags to raise money for the banquet. Again we had cause to be proud of our Athletic Department. Our football team took the state championship, and our baseball team became one of the co-champions of North Carolina. As we approached the end of our junior year. the war in Europe was brought to a close: and' we looked forward to our senior year with hope and thanksgiving. We entered our last year of high school life in a world of peace. Mr, George S. Willard came back as our new principal. Soon we had our class organized and were looking forward to the happy experiences of graduation. Our senior year in high school has certainly proved to be one of the happiest and most fruitful milestones in our journey along the highway of life. Even though we shall forever hold dear the fond memories of our high school days, we Will always look forward to bigger and better things to come. SARAH ANN WILLIAMS, DON BARNES.
