At halftime during Homecoming night at Friday night's game, the Sophomore float Bears Are Dynomite caught on fire. It was quickly extinguished, and no damage was done. In spite of the mishap, the float won third place. Attendants Kim Rowe and Phillip Montijo represented the Sophomore class. As the Sophomores entered their second year, they had their school days filled with Freak Week, Western Week, Homecoming and the Sophomore Welcome Dance that was held in November, where the Freshmen were admitted free. As a money making project they sold snowcones in the breezeway for a week. With the support of their sponsors, Mrs. Claussen and Mr. Folley, the Sophomores had a successful year. s ' A -A iw ZF? Under the guidance of Larry Delbridge, Freshmen coach, and Dick Maynes, j.V. Coach, the teams met their opponents well prepared. Mr. Delbridge said, All in all we had a good year, the team plays well together, and we didn't have any selfish playing. Defense was stressed this season according to Mr. Delbridge. Mr. Maynes said, The team lacks height, and there was a lack of concentration not only at games, but at practices as well. lf the j.V. players expect to play Var., that is one thing they have to improve on. Both coaches saw quite a few prospective Varsity players. 1, Tommy Martinez rebounds for Coolidge. 2. Phillip Montijo shoots for two. 3. Even though the club started late, many activities were accomplished. The club earned money by having bakesales and selling Santa Claus Iollipops. A membership party was held in the latter part of the year. The highlight of the club was the Cinco de Mayo Assembly, which was held in early May. This assembly consisted of Mexican music played by a band from out of town and our own school band. Dancing was done by Casa Grande and CHS students, and speeches were given by spe ial guests. . Their season started in the summer as they prepared dances for competition at Gamp of Champs at N.A,U. At camp, they learned dances, skits, and won several awards: the Super-Star Squad Award, two Red Ribbo'ns, and several Blue and Red Ribbons for individual competition. Every year, the Pom Pon and Cheer- leaders work together to put on the Annual Dinner. The money raised from this dinner was used to buy new uniforms. During football season, the Pom line was a part of the marching band, they performed with the band at pre-game and half-time shows, attended Band Day and other band activities. Basketball sea- son set the Pom Pon Girls on their own, where hours of practice kept time work- ing to regain victory for their basketball team. This was the first year these four girls have cheered together. Cheerleading was a good experience for the girls, and they really did build the team and class spirit. The girls and the other cheerleaders sponsored a banquet. It was a job well done. The Freshmen cheerleaders traveled to the away games to keep the spirit going all the time. A change from the usual comedy, the play, written in 1908, offered a challenge to the cast, Only three cast members had any acting exper- ience, and the new actors will provide a boost to the Drama department. Many of the cast members who had been working on The Crucible before were in rehearsal for twelve weeks before presenting the play on April 29 and 30. The cast played to limited but responsive audiences. The play was set in a boarding house. There were an assortment of shifty charac- ters who were changed by the presence of The Stranger.
