WEESE Business Education STUDENT COUNCIL Ofiicers of the Council include Richard Pincus, Treasurer, Barbara Harrison, Vice- President, Eugene Horowitz, President, Barbara Cohan, Secretary, and Morton Berg, Sergeant-at-Arms. The Calvin Coolidge Student Council is the agent between the student body and the faculty. Its activities make Coolidge a democratic school. Throughout the year the Council spon- sored before-game pep rallies in the cafeteria and provided programs for ar- dent fans at football and basketball games. The Football Finale, with music by the Sensational Six, dancing in the armory dur- ing the lunch periods, decorating a Christ- mas tree for the main hall, and a talent show in March were other proiects of the year. The Coolidge-Tech dance held in the Tech gymnasium on January 8 created good will between the two schools. Throughout the term, the Council cam- paigned vigorously for charitable activi- ties. In December Council members opened Coolidge's Country Store to collect canned goods for needy families. They sponsored the Toys for Tots Dance. The Bolling Field Air Force Band played at this event, at which large numbers of toys collected for distribution by the Marine Corps added to the Christmas Cheer. The Student Council also sent CARE packages to Korea and col- lected donations for the Tuberculosis Fund. One representative from each section becomes a member of the Council. The Council members are David Epstein, Neil Zarin, Morton Berg, Richard Pincus, Barbara Cohen, Eugene Horowitz, Barbara Harrison, Carol Isaacson, Linda Smith, Stella Striner. EDO S. o re t the On George Washington's Birthday, 1954, Coolidge High School was awarded a Principal Award by Free- doms Foundation, an organization in- terested in promoting the ideals of Americanism, democracy, and free- dom. The credit for this honor belongs to the faculty and the students, whose work, effort, and mutual respect and understanding, in the day by day routine of the school, contribute to the achievement of ideals in which we all believe. This awards program involved a presentation and documentation of the programs carried out in Coolidge High School in 1952-53 which brought about a better understanding of the American Way of Life and more effec- tive training for active United States citizenship. fl A The UNITED NATIONS DAY assembly was the most impressive of the year. Sixty foreign students at Coolidge participated in the exercises. if ACTIVITIES SPANISH CLUB The largest and the liveliest club at Coolidge has over 100 members. The Polemics Club has brought to Coolidge various types of discussion programs. Through informal panel discussions, it acquaints the students with events current in our nation and in other parts of the world. The democratic manner in which these discussions are presented trains the club mem- bers in group participation. It sharpens their minds, intensi- ties their interests in local, national, and world affairs, and affords its members opportunity to practice Parlimentary pro- cedures. The George Washington University Speech Conference is another Polemics Club activity. Each fall it selects twelve students to represent Coolidge at the University. In the spring three of the twelve attend a speech conference in which they compete for three one-year scholarships offered by the Uni- versity Speech Department. In the past, many of the Polemics Club members have been awarded these scholarships. Eugene Lambert, chosen in the '53 competition, was our latest winner. For over a month the candi- dates studied daily newspapers relig- iously, and during the final two weeks the panel and alternates reviewed daily papers from cover to cover. At the assembly on December 3, Mr. Alfred Friendly, the assistant managing- editor of the POST, conducted the IN- QUIRING EDITOR quiz, which was later broadcast over station WTOP. Participating in the program were Betty Lou Hornstein, Frances Press, Pris- cilla Rose, Naomi Weiss, James Dunlap, Eugene Lipkowitz, Marvin Simon, and William Stone. Deborah Dobkin, Sandra Parzow, and George Kraftover, alternates, worked up until the last minute. The boys were victorious in this spirited session, but as Mr. Friendly pointed out, lt was not that the girls missed the answers, but that the boys were Iuckier on tougher questions for more points. Probably more variety and more chatter come from the Coolidge dramatists' corner than from any other wing of the building. New committees and four separate acting groups set up within the organization of players make a lot of noise, most of which signifies some- thing. Adrienne Abelman, Dorothea Sherman, Carolyn lnotf, and Diane Harrison, chairmen of the acting groups, compete in staging small but complete productions for club meetings. Two of the best of these performances were The Miracle of the Dreidle and Our Lady's Juggler . A make-up group, filled with ideas derived from classes at George Washington University, and an ambitious publicity committee have been initiated by the club. The Players, as a group, attended the Catholic University produc- tion of Harvey . The ambitious proiect of the year, however, was the gay comedy Men Are Like Streetcars , which the Players staged as its spring play. Miss Elizabeth Smith is the new sponsor of the club. Sometimes it is difficult to determine who is having more fun at club meetings-the members or OUR MISS SMITH. 4 STAGE CREW Regulators of lights and sounds for every performance on the Coolidge stage: Albert Greenfield calls the pro- iection room. Mrs. Ellen Glassman, Art Director, makes up Georgina Alarcon before the show. Colt Capers of 1954, produced by Mrs. Anna Barrett and directed by Barbara Cohan, proved to be one of the finest shows ever presented at Coolidge. The enthusiasm of the audience matched that of the cast as each act was intro- duced by the two emcees, Sandra Damewood and Joel Rubenstein. Elaine Snyder's singing and sketching was enioyed by everyone. Aletha Agee, Sylvia Devy, Art Lamb, and Jack Rowzie, our guests of honor, acting as iudges selected the outstanding acts of the show. One of the acts chosen was the Tennes- see Wig-Walk, by Dobbie Gordon, Myrna Gordon, Eileen Kragh, Sue Cole, and Jane So- ber. Others who took prizes were Bernie Sto- pak, saxophone player, Robert Cummings, who sang and played the guitar, and David Fram, pianist. The reviews of the program were so compli- mentary that a repeat performance of the show was presented, upon invitation, for the boys of National Training School. Capitol Recording star Robert Cummings became a big hit at Coolidge. His rendition of Hey, Joe brought the house down as the call for encore was heard throughout the auditorium. Paul Garner and Richard Pincus pantomime the rage, Little Blue Riding Hood. Lovely Hula Hands was beautifully interpreted by Betty McKnew, Carolyn Donohue, and Evelyn Seigel. One of the funniest acts was the football ballet. Two of the twinkle-toed stars were Sam Bran and Irwin Ruben. Y My e-,, A ski The Football Sfory-game by game COOLIDGE 0-MECHANICKSBURG 27 Beginning the season with a new opponent, the Colts were defeated by a more experienced Mechanicksburg eleven 27-0. There were many iniuries in this game including Bruce Tucker, Larry Blanken, Irwin Ruben, Stan Kay, Bill Lewis, and Willy Edwards. Roger Panneton didn't even dress be- cause of an injured knee. Ted Lindahl was also sidelined with a broken ankle. The Colts never threatened as the game was played mostly inside the Coolidge 50-yard line. COOLIDGE 12-BELL 7 Opening their inter-hiqh season, the Colts took on a high-spirited Bell eleven. Getting off to an early 6-0 lead on a twenty yard end run by Stan Kay, the Colts led throughout the first half. The second Colt score came on a pass from Stan Kay to end Danny Pratt, who made a sen- sational finger-tip catch of the ball. The second half went to Bell as they drove out yardage on power plays which eventually set up their only score. A strong defense throughout the second half quenched any chance of another Colt score. COOLIDGE 21-WASHINGTON-LEE 41 The Colts met up with one of the area's top teams in Washington-Lee, and despite losing a hard-fought contest, the Colts made an excellent showing, scoring more points than any other of the Little Generals' opponents. The Colts' main offense centered around the passing of Jack Silas, who completed 11 out of 21 passes and hit for two touchdowns. But the fleet-footed W-L halfbacks proved too much for the inexperienced Colt defense. COOLIDGE 6-ROOSEVELT 25 The spirited leadership and sharp ball handling of Rider Quarterback, Phil Perlo, led the interhigh champs over a game Colt team. Getting most of the breaks, the Riders scored early as Perlo went twenty-five yards on a quarterback sneak in the first five minutes of play to take a lead that was never threatened. The Colt offense was moving but failed several times deep inside Rough Rider territory. The single Colt tally came as the result of a wide-awake defensive play as line- backer Willie Edwards intercepted a Perlo flat pass and scampered 60 yards untouched late in the final period. COOLIDGE 20-CHAMBERLAIN O Break-away running showed for the Colts for the first time this season as quarterback Roger Panneton and iunior halfback .lack Silas each went through right guard for fifty-yard touchdown runs early in the second half. Speedy Stan Kay scored the other Colt touchdown by scampering around left end on a reverse for a twenty- yard tally. Linebacker Burt Liss added the two extra points. COOLIDGE 13-WILSON 12 Rated as underdogs to a powerful Wilson eleven, the Colts invaded the home of the Green Tigers and did a bit of growling of their own. Midway in the third quarter with the score 6-0, in favor of Wilson, Roger Panneton broke loose over right tackle for a touchdown. Burt Liss converted, to make the score 7-6 Coolidge. Five minutes later Willy Edwards romped over right guard for 27 yards and another Colt score. This time Liss kicked wide of the goal posts. In the dying minutes of the game, Wilson's Bob Chatfield scored but failed to kick the tying point. ln this game the Orange and Grey pulled the years' biggest upset. COOLIDGE 0-BLAIR 7 Only the superior puntinq of Roger Panneton and fierce tackling of Dick Malloy held the score down. The Colts never seriously threatened, getting inside the Blazers 50-yard line only once. The game, which fol- lowed the heavy snow, was a sloppy affair. Reds Smith accounted for BIair's single score by skirting his own left end for twenty yards. COOLIDGE 7-WESTERN 21 Going into the game with saddened hearts, the Colts bowed down to a mediocre Western team. The team had just seen all title hopes fade away as RooseveIt's Rough Riders defeated Tech 21-0. With the combination of Silas to Panneton clicking for a forty-yard touchdown play in the final seconds, the Colts avoided a shut-out, Burt Liss converted to make the final score 21-7. COOLIDGE 0-TECH 14 Always wanting to take the season finale, the Colts met a superior Tech team and went down in defeat 14-0. Led by the hard driving of Larry 0'Cleary, All-High full- back, the Trainers twice drove the distance of the field for scores. Only once did Coolidge threaten. Stan Kay re- turned a punt 71 yards to the Tech 11 only to have the surge come to an abrupt end on the four-yard line. Deep despair is- shown on the faces of members of the team as the Colts are being handed a defeat by Tech. On the bench are Al Krause, Leslie Bonde Bert Schartz, Willie Edwards, Joe Fisher. Stan Kav. Paul Yorkdale. Benton Becker. Joel Beiser. Jerrv Zanelotti. Ed Gants. and Donald Pincus.
