C FOREWORD To the students of Coolidge whose comradeship and cooperation made this book possible we present the '46 Corral. Bigger than ever before, our first peacetime yearbook is a product of that teamwork which exhibited itself in the enthusiastic support of every school activity from Student Council dances to basketball games and caused Coolidgites to be aptly referred to as an 'all-high' student body. All high , meaning championship caliber, is the best word to de- fine the spirit which has prevailed at our school. We won't attempt to analyze this spirit or even profess to know how it came into existence. But we do recognize it as being a living, vigorous, motivating force in our school. Perhaps in the years to come while glancing over this book we shall recall what was accomplished through teamwork in high school, and we may ask ourselves why such spirit and active co- operation should be confined to our high school society, why it could not grow with individuals and become a power for real good in our national and international communities! Here, then, is our school year of 45-46, all wrapped up in a neat little package. We hope that the pictures are good, the write-ups are interesting, and the spirit is there. So to you, all high student body, we present the '46 Corral. 1 MR. T. J. HOLMES Principal As the members of this year's graduating classes ioin the growing ranks of Coolidge Alumni, we wish for them the best of everything in all of their undertakings. We hope that their days in this school have been interesting, enioyable, and profitable. We ask that each one, in the best Coolidge tradition, take his work, whatever it may be, seriously and make his contribution to his community, his country, and to humanity. May God bless each one of you! SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Now that we are leaving Coolidge to follow many and diversified ways of life, it is fitting that we, as a class, should review once more the events of the past three years that have meant so much to us. All of us remember vividly the fall of 1943, with every Friday afternoon mark- ing a new victory for our football team, which in the end rewarded our greatest hope by becoming the champion high-school team of the District. Football tactics remind us of our mad rush to get into the right clubs on the right day, a trick we could never seem to master even after three years' practice. As the spring of i944 approached, a girl cadet corps was organized, and many girls of our class added To the rear, march! and ln cadence to their vocabularies. That spring, too, our tennis team captured the championship and began pre- paring for the repeat performance they were to stage the following year. As we came back to Coolidge in the fall of '44 for our iunior year, we began nine months of hard work, intermingled with more fun than we'd ever had before. Our social life moved at a faster tempo this year, with the Touchdown Dance, the Turnabout Dance, the Cadet Ball, the lnterhigh Dance, and finally, in the spring, the big success of the year for us, our Junior Prom. As we grew older our appetites grew with us, and the faculty thought it advis- able to give us earlier lunch periods. The first lunch soon became affectionately known as the Breakfast Club. After games this year we went home with our ears deafened by the resounding noise of the newly founded Varsity Band. During our iunior year, the new Club Room, open to seniors during lunch periods, became the center of the school's social life. The spring play of 1945, Arsenic and Old Lace, was as great a success as its predecessor, The Man Who Came to Dinner . ln April we watched the flag above the plaza fly at half mast, and our voices were hushed in tribute to the memory of our great war leader, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Before the flag was raised again, however, we witnessed the triumph of our Allied forces in Europe, and here at Coolidge we marked this V-E Day with a simple, religious service. lt seemed strange to be going to school during our senior year in a world at peace. The first effect of this change on Coolidge was the return from the armed forces of its principal, Mr. Tommy Holmes, whom we were proud and glad to welcome back. lt was hard to say good-bye to Mr. Brougher, though, and we tried to express our gratitude by presenting him with a silver service and our best wishes for continued success. ln the fall of our senior year the cast of the H.M.S. Pinafore presented a two nights' performance and succeeded in singing their way into the hearts of their audience. The February class, suddenly finding commencement iust over the horizon, elected their class officers and on January i8 held their Senior Prom at the Shoreham Hotel. For the most part our three years at Coolidge have been happy ones. We've worked together as a class to hold high the standards of our school. As commence- ment draws near, and we are about to become alumni of this school, it is with real sorrow that we think of leaving it. We know, however, that we will treasure through- out our lives the bonds of affection formed here. We are leaving with high hopes both for our future and for that of Coolidge. Our interest was soon directed toward the football season, which gave us, as new students, our first taste of school spirit. Our first opportunity to show our diversified talents came with the fall show, The Pied Piper , with all semesters represented in the cast. Basketball next took the stage, with a victory over undefeated Eastern, 40-38, climaxing the SSCISOI1. The beginning of the new semester brought tryouts for the spring play, Arsenic and Old Lace , in which a member of our class played one of the leads. Then came baseball, tennis, swimming, and the cadet competitions to entertain us until the end of the semester. Report cards brought our first year at Coolidge to a sobering close, with their reminder of progress achieved or neglected. When we returned after a summer spent in working, attending summer school, or just loafing, All work and no play was not our motto. With the beginning of the new semester we were iuniors, of age at last. The football team again went into action, with many of our classmates playing on the team. In December, Mrs. Mc- Adoo and the chorus presented H. M. S. Pinafore , in which several members of our class sang leading roles. The next important events were the basketball games, which brought the championship to Coolidge. We were proud of the contribution to that achievement made by the members of the iunior class who were on the team. One of these boys was placed on the all-high team. We are all looking forward to the Junior Prom, a festive celebration of our status as upper classmen. Soon we shall be seniors. We know that with this position will come a greater responsibility not only to our school, but also to ourselves, Individually and as a group. ff If SECTION 307-6 Lf' Mr. Gilbert I5 In - 'eq-in , eer on , I up S., Pollack, A., Regeimbal, N., Rooney, T. I 1 1 I 1 1 f MNMLN GG H1179 rf ,Q-If SP ORTS FOOTBALL ROUND-UP After winning 6, losing 2, and tying l, the Coolidge football team placed third in the 1945 interhigh competition. ln the opening game the Colts, with 7 returning leltermen, easily took Western, 12-0. On Nimitz day C.C.H.S. fought a tough game with Anacostia, ending with a tie of T3-13. They then gained an easy victory over St. Johns, I9-0. The Colts next conquered our arch-rival Roosevelt, I9-6, and a week later defeated Central by the same score. After this game, Coolidge triumphed over a previously untied, undefeated Gonzaga, 6-0. But the powerful Wilson Tigers broke this beautiful winning streak, 18-T3, and then Eastern blanked us, 20-0. On Thanksgiving Day the Colts came back to win their last game over Tech, 14-7. At this point Eastern led the league while Coolidge and Wilson tied for second place. Then Wilson and Western played a game that had been rained out twice. Wilson won and relegated the Colts to third. ln the All-High-All-Prep clash at Griffith Stadium, Coolidge was represented by Chuck Ackerman, Char- lie Kiesgen, and Stan King. For the third consecutive season the game ended in a tie, with this year's score, 6-6. Those team members who received a big orange C were Charles Ackerman, Ted Barnett, Clifton Browne, Norman Chaudet, .lack Doffort, Chauncey D'Pugh, Lawrence Drew, Frank Geraci, Norman Gul- lickson, Bill Hepburn, William Hulbert, Charles Kies- gen, Stanley King, Warren Malkin, Dick Taylor, Wil- liam Witzel, George Lindsay, Robert Weiman, Charles Travers, and William Cannon. ,. BASKETBALL The interhigh championship, the metropolitan championship, and a possible southern states cham- pionship sums up the accomplishments of the 1945- 1946 Coolidge basketball team, whose chances at the beginning of the season looked definitely poor. When the team was organized on November 1, the single letterman was Bill Cannon, and only eleven others had varsity or iunior varsity experience. Prac- ticing hard, however, the Colts took St. Johns in their first game, 36-34. Meeting their first interhigh oppo- nent, Western on January 4, the team won easily, 31-19. Again playing St. Johns, Coolidge came out on top, 36--21. A close victory over Anacostia, 28-26, put the Colts with Tech and Wilson in a three-way tie for first place. The next victim was Episcopal, who lost 36-32. As the opponents became tougher the Coolidge fans consistently increased in numbers and noise and, aided by the Varsity Band and Cheerleaders, fostered such a determined spirit among the members of the team that they upset a favored Roosevelt squad with the decisive score of 45-28, thus tying with Wilson for first place. Fighting hard, the Colts went down for their first defeat of the season to an almost college-quality Bullis quint, with a score of 26--37. In a tight, hard-fought game with Central, the Cool- idge cagers lost 33-37, but later snapped back to down Blair, 27-17, and St. Anthony, 24-15. Playing a fast, first-place Wilson squad, the Colts suffered a defeat by the narrowest margin possible, one point, 30-31. Aroused by this upset, the Coolidge team licked St. Albans with a big score of 51-32, and Eastern very decisively, 46-34. Gonzaga next fell to the Colts, 36-29. ln the last scheduled game of the season on February 15, the Coolidge team nosed out Tech 33-32, thus assuring itself a place in the inter- wigli playoffs. Drawing Tech as their first opponent in the play- offs, the Coolidge cagers, in a real thriller that was decided only at the final gun, licked their opponents, 40-36, and the next night met Wilson to decide the interhigh championship. ln a hard-fought game the Colts topped a favored Wilson team, with a nine point margin, 41-32, before a sellout crowd at Tech gym. As a result of this game both Coolidge and Wilson were invited to play in the Star tournament for the metropolitan championship. With Bethesda as their opponent in the first game at Ritchie Coliseum, the Coolidge five won with little trouble, 40-36. On Wednesday, February 27, the Colts edged Gonzaga, with Dick Taylor's foul shot in the last eight seconds of the game, 21-20, winning the opportunity to play Wilson Saturday for the metropolitan championship. Determined to prove that they were not a club who lucked out its vic- tories, the Coolidge boys played their finest game on Saturday, March 2, they beat Wilson by eighteen points, 40-22, outscoring and out playing them in every department, with the Coolidge captain, Bill Cannon, scoring nineteen points alone. The reward for winning the metropolitan championship, a small gold basketball, is now proudly worn by each mem- ber of the team. As the best high-school team in the Washington area, the Colts will travel to Durham, North Carolina, on March 15 and 16 to compete in the tournament to determine the best team in the southern states. We know the boys will do their best to win, and we wish them all possible luck. The boys responsible for this championship season who will receive letters are as follows: Bill Cannon, Dick Taylor, Stan King, Bob Kleinknecht, Bob Rohr, Warren Malkin, Bob King, Richard Sturges, Bill Wit- zel, and Dick Reed, manager, the coach, who with but one letterman brought this victory to us, is Mr. Julian Colangelo. For the third consecutive season the Coolidge tennis team, coached by Mr. Leonard Himes, captured first place in interhigh competition. As reward, the Colt net-men received the Western Maryland Cup. They also were runners-up for team honors in the Sidwell Friends' contest. The Colts lost their opening match to Woodberry Forest, 5-l, but two weeks later they came back to blank Wilson, 6-0. C.C.H.S. dropped the following 'ETENNIS i l game to St. Albans, 5-4, but then came fighting back to win five straight, decisive victories, they defeated Tech 6-0, Roosevelt 6-l, Central 7-0, Landon Prep 6-3, and polished off the season by shutting out Western 7-0. Those team members who received letters were Richard Fink, Eugene Griffin, Olin Newton, Robert Spangler, George Sponsler, John McKinley, and Sam Phillips. , 1i-ii The Coolidge track team of 1945, with no coach, ended their season fifth in interhigh competition. ln the first two meets the Colts did not do well, but in the third meet Larry Drew ran second in the mile, and Hausrath, Tash, Drew, and Lindsay took first place in the medley relay. At the C Club meet Drew scored again with fourth place in the 880 yard run. At the interhigh Meet the team finished the season's contests very well, with Vitamin Drew coming through again with first in the 880 yard run and one team- mate, Tash, not far behind in fourth place, also, Ferguson and Espey won third and fifth places re- spectively in the mile run, and Lindsay, Davidson, Hausrath, and Krider placed fifth in the mile relay. Those winning letters were as follows: Dean Haus- rath, Lawrence Drew, Ralph Tash, Robert Ferguson, Thomas Davidson, Raymond Espey, and George Lindsay. This year the team will be coached by Mr. Roberts, the newest addition to the boys' physical education department. TRACK F l 4 1 BASEBALL The 1945 Colt baseball team under the coaching of Archie Neer won second place in the interhigh race. To open the season Coolidge blanked Devitt, 6-O and a few days later defeated Bethesda, l2-2. Then the mighty Colts topped Wilson, 6-l, and Woodberry Forest, 6-5. Following these games C.C.H.S. won over Western, 8-3, and beat Tech, 7-4. In a very close game Coolidge barely nosed out Blair, 2-l, but after- wards romped roughshod over Roosevelt, 14-0. Two days after this, Bethesda came back to break the Colts' winning streak, 12-2, and shortly afterwards Eastern served them another defeat, 2-1. The Colts, however, snapped back and blasted Blair, 8-l, and Gonzaga, l4-4. ln the last two games of the season conquered Central, 8-4, but fell to Anacostia, 4-3. ln the interhigh playoffs C.C.H.S. blanked Central, 6-O, but lost to Eastern, 4-O. Catcher Stanley King, Pitcher Charles Henry, and Shortstop Allan Shaw won berths on the Times- Herald All-High team. Letters were awarded to Stanley King, Charles Henry, Charles Kiesgen, George Neumann, Allan Shaw, Edward Balderson, William Lake, William Mc- Kinney, Daniel Bass, Tommy Israel, Robert Wyatt. The Coolidge golf team of 1945 placed first in interhigh competition with an undefeated season. They started well, beating Roosevelt seven to two, then edged Western five to four, and hit their stride by blanking both Central and Wilson nine to nothing. After these games the sharp shooting Colts allowed no opponent more than two points out of nine. In the whole season the Coolidge golfers shut out Central twice, Wilson twice, and Roosevelt once, and beat a favored Devitt team seven to two. Ably coached by Mr. Julian Colangelo, the boys responsible for this great success, all of whom received letters, were Alan Weisberg, Richard Sturges, Jack Bingham, William Elting, Jay Wolf, and Richard Taylor. Of these boys four-.lay Wolf, Richard Sturges, Jack Bingham, and Richard Taylor-are returning, and the chance of their bringing back the l946f golf championship is -'ery great indeed. .bf GOLF C CLUB Boys who have earned athletic letters in some sport make up the membership of The Calvin Coolidge Colts C Club, which sponsors such school activities as the Junior-Senior games and various parties and picnics. VARSITY BAND At every basketball and football game, Coolidge students see-and hear-nine orange-clad boys literally blowing their brains out. These boys compose the Varsity Band, a unique Coolidge organization that commands the envy of all the other schools in the District. The members of the band meet for an hour every Tuesday morning, learning their songs and stunts, which add greatly to the pep and in- crease hugely the enioyment of all who attend the athletic contests at which they play. Manager-Robert Warner, Sergeant- at-arms, Treasurer-Eldon Volkmer, Fac- ulty Adviser-Mr. Himes. CHEERLEADERS At every football and basketball game and at every athletic assembly, half-a- dozen or more peppy, orange-and-gray- clad boys and girls are out in front of the rooters' stand performing enthusias- tic but rhythmic gyratlons. These kids are the cheerleaders, as well organized as any team and almost as essential to our athletic success. lt has been said that Coolidge is the noisiest school in the District -an undeniable compliment to our energetic cheerleaders. An athletic letter presented at the close of the school year rewards these boys and girls for their efforts. Adviser-Mr. Himes. GIRLS' G. S. A. This enthu- siasm flowed over into such cadet activities as a high- scoring rifle team, a map-reading class, the Chevrons , . g . This year it initiated a new method of ha,ving the battalion competition. Heretofore all the battalions drilled in Central's stadium. This year, however, each battalion will drill on its own field and the iudges will travel to the respective schools for the com- petition. Although none of the cadet competitions have taken place as we go to press, it seems safe to say that the 8th Regiment Cadets will place high. STAFF: Major Richard Endres lst Lt. Jack Brennan lst lt. Last spring, with only a year's experience behind them, one of the Coolidge companies marched into sixth place. On the evening of February 2, Coolidge cadets, both boys and girls, found compensation for the rigors of military training in the fun of dancing at the Regimental Ball, in the armory. Now the girls are back at the task of preparing to take the red diamond awarded to the company winning the competitive drill. PINAFORE Two of the big nights of the year '45-'46 on the Coolidge Social Calendar were those on which H.M.S. Pinafore was presented. This performance, Coolidge's first attempt at light-opera, was so pop- ular with all who saw it that more light-operas will probably be given in the future. Honors go to Bob Rutledge, Margaret Bray, Nat- alie Salomon, John Lakin, Jack Sauerhoft, Barton Pilcher, Bill Hansen, Fred Corley, Kenneth Coffman, louis Biggs, Betty Bergman, Julia Ellis, John Don- nelly, Bob Levick, Arthur Mott, Alan Weisberg and the other members of this large and talented cast for their portrayal of the dramatis personae. Gilbert's sparkling dialogue and Sullivan's tuneful music were enhanced by the stage setting, costumes, and singing, all of professional effectiveness. The teamwork of Mrs. Thelma H. McAdoo, other faculty members, and students who devoted their time and interest to the production led to this superior performance. TOUCH DOWN DANCE The first date on Coolidge's social calendar for the year was November 2. The event was the Touchdown Dance, celebrating the football season and provid- ing an opportunity for Coolidgites to become ac- quainted. With Bob lee's Aristocrats furnishing the music, couples waltzed and iitterbugged, swung and swayed for three hours, from nine until twelve. The whole school was represented, from shy little rookies FEBRUARY SENIOR PROM Friday evening, January 18, 1946, the February graduating class held its Senior Prom at the Shore- ham Hotel. Everyone had a grand time dancing to the sweet, soothing rhythms of Barney l.owe's orchestra. Besides the blissful countenances of senior classmen, some of the familiar faces were those of Mr. and Mrs. Holmes, Miss Hanft, and Mr. and Mrs. Plotkin. to well-known football and tennis stars. Members of the faculty who sponsored the dance seemed to enioy themselves as much as did any of their stu- dents. The first dance held at the school since the lifting of war-time restriction, brought a noticeable increase in the number of cars as means of transpor- tation. As successful as any such event ever held, the Touchdown Dance initiated a promising social year. The climax of the evening, the Grand March, was led by the class president, Harry Schnabel. Imme- diately following this, Tommy Israel, master of cere- monies, presented the winners of the popularity poll. Everyone seemed to agree that the dance was a great success and the punch senved was wonderful.
