By challengmg the pupils to greater goals, and, most important, setting an example that is over- shadowed only by that of a parent, Cooley's faculty has demon- ' strated its interest and dedication to American youth. The ' faculty is presented on youth's behalf. wililw I lvl Dedicafed Adminisfrafion C ounsels Sfudenfs 1? 5 3 Av Q 4: Z 1 Clarence H, Hiller Helen Delbridge Owen A. Emmons Assistant Principal Assistant Principal Principal lx Joseph Schindler Lucy Quinn 5 '01 '02 Samuegmpector l iw Msrlom Pramotes lllgollgilil Wew For thirty years, the Cooley High School community, numbering thousands of parents and 3,400 students this year alone, have known and respected the experienced leadership of Principal Owen A. Emmons. To parents and students alike who were disappointed when the undefeated Cooley football team was not chosen to play in the city-championship game, Mr. Emmons counseled that to take disappointment with your head high is the mark of a real champion. Cooley did. When mounting national publicity was focused on the less than one per cent of problem American youth, Mr. Emmons urged the faculty to keep their sense of proportion, to remember the needs of all children. Cooley did. Besides Mr. Emmons, Assistant Principals Helen Delbridge and C. H. Hiller serve Cooley youth in a hundred ways, from organiz- ing senior class activities to offering advice in o moment of decision. The counselors, only eight in number, know their students i425 on the averogel remarkably well-well enough to individualize a program, to make out detailed job and college recommenda- tions, and to convince the lagging student to do his best. From competent leadership, everyone derives something of value. ii W W lf? ,ill ,ig ,P Lcwnn B k 302 James Chap 30l Green Ros: Harvey Chapman Ruth Co 202 219 220 Deparlmenf Heads Plan and Arrange Class Schedules Harvey Meyers Ruth Bams Harold Lindsay Dorothy Roehm Commercial English Health Language ,JR Ralph Twltchell Doris Lenz Alger Wood John Kuny Mdfhemdfiti MlISlC Sgglql Science Vocqflanql Teachers Mold C haracler of F ufure C ifizens ,,,. Through the imparting of valuable learning and keen skills of observation and thinking, teachers seek to heighten the pupil's personal development and competence. Alive in good humor, and rich in genuine friendliness, Cooley's teachers are the guides for tomorrow. In a vocal room: William Kaerper directs the Chair in the complicated A Jubilant Song. Before the I2-B play: Joy Lunsford questions William Hollingsworth about her role in Full House. In the teachers' Iunchroom: Amelia Henderson and Patricia LaHood, Leonard Baruch and Marvin Greene, and Charles Hohner and Henry Maloney converse during their lunch period. 1uum.,, ai 1 SENIORS have reached th e summit of their high school experiences, yet, they realize that the lessons learned at Cooley are merely preparation for the f uture. Miss Crosby can recall a day in i927 when she and Mr. Emmons first officially opened Cooley's doors. ln 28 years of service Mrs. Houge has placed many of her commercial students in jobs. When Mr. Twitchell announced his retire- ment after thirty years of teaching at Cooley, he was given a trophy by his Trig. class. The letter accompanying the award read, All of us have had you as a teacher, and we feel that the knowl- edge we gained in your classes invaluable. Your friendly mannerism and down-to-earth way of teaching made every day in class a worthwhile one. Therefore, we would like to present to you this Most Valuable Teacher Award. The kindness toward a mental patient, the participation in the Y-Teen Bazaar, and the book drive for veterans helped the Y groups in achieving their goal of helping others. Each Easter and Thanksgiving, the Y-Teens present a religious service for the students in order that they appreciate fully the significance of the holiday. i 'l? ' F arty-lour Besides service projects, the Y groups plan dances, hayrides, and other social functions. Club meetings encourage everyone to take part in these activi- ties . . . iPerhaps the best meetings are the joint meetings with the auctions, games, and fellowshipl . . . Cooley's Y-Teen Cabinet and newly organized I-li-Y Council are formed of leaders from the various Y groups in the school, These two organizations work to promote better understanding and co-operation between the sepa- rate Y-Teen and Hi-Y clubs. Through the efforts of the cabinet and the council, the individual groups function more smoothly and are quicker to realize their purposes. Y-Teen Cabinet Row I: J. McGuire, P. Halladay lSec.l R. Although various performances for other civic clubs are frequent, the annual Christmas, Spring, and Band concerts are highlights of the school year and have gained a reputation for their quality and unusual features. Cooley congratulates Miss Doris Lenz, the new head of the Music Department on her fine directing of the Concerts. Sixty-five ,-J 0,- tl l l l l ' 4 -,L fl? f' XF 'aft 5 . gc ,. E RLUGION Traditionally Cooley young people carry what they learn in the classroom into their extra- curricular activities. There is no better ex- ample of this practice than the music stu- dents. They stay late to rehearse concerts, organize bands to make spending money, and sing in vocal groups to entertain at school functions. Applying knowledge is an impor- tant step in the development of people who will meet the challenges of our changing world. All Q Q git: SPORTS are important at Cooley. However, the atti- tudes of th ' e spectator in the stand and player after the game in the locker room have proved that it is not the championship football tucked under the arm that counts. lt is what is carried away from the game that really matters--the spirit and the sportsman- ship which are developed through victory and defeat. This year, under trying conditions, Cooley definitely proved its championship qualities on the field and in the locker room. Sixty-le . Big Shots Shoot Baskets Highlighting the basketball season was the victory by Cooley's hoopsters over traditional rival Red- ford, which enabled the Little Red Jug to remain at Cooley. Even though this year's record was rather unimpressive, the experience gained by some of the juniors should form a strong founda- tion for an improved squad next year. Besides showing the great team spirit neces- sary to stay undefeated in league games, the Card lineup boasted numerous individual stars, five of whom were named to the all- city team. The expert guidance of Coach Abe Eliowitz is not only shown in the team's per- formance, but, also, in the fact that Cooley's top pitcher went on to hurl in the major leagues.
