PRESIDENT? MESSAGE January, 1 933 ur: memhers of our class now hegin to realize what graduation from high school means. For the past four years most of us have heen together in Thomas M. Cooley High School, although many have come from other secondary institutions of learning. During these more or less well-filled semesters we have felt safe and secure but now there is an impending feeling of lonesomeness and helplessness as we look into the future. We are sure, however, that our learning and preparations will support, us in later life, especially in the realms of higher education. We know that we will be called upon to lead our lives as good citizens, and in this undertaking there will be no failures. With our mem- orial to the school we have meagerly attempted to pay our debts of gratitude. Therefore, we, the January graduates of l933, passing our ideals and traditions on to the following graduating classes, wish to express and extend our gratitude and thanks to all those who have helped and endeavored to make our high school life the happiest and most productive period of our careers. WIAYNARD R. BAILEY l 6 ll THE CARDINAL CASTELLAN OF 1933 JANUARY CLA SS HISTORY ANUARY 12 was the climax of four years of companionship, effort, hard work, and pleasure for the two hundred and thirty two graduates of the Class of January, 1933. The class was first organized as 12B's in March, 1932. Thomas McGibbon was elected president, Jack Cox vice-president, June Hosier, secretary, and Lloyd Thom- as treasurer. Selection of the 12B cabinet immediately followed the selection of officers. Thus the January, 1933 class was first organized under the capable super- vision of its sponsors: Mr. Emmons, Mrs. Snider, Mr. Allman, Mr. Fraser, Miss Reed, Miss Wilk, and Mr. Little. Four events of primary importance were undertaken by the class during its 12B semester. The first was the 12B play, A Full House, presented in the audi- torium on the evenings of April 29 and 30. All members of the cast and even the hard working director, Mrs. A. Fry, survived the arduous ordeal of play prac- tice and the production was pronounced a success. The second event of the season was the 12B dance held in the gymnasium on a Friday afternoon late in May. A picnic at Twin Beach Country Club was the third function of the 12B class. The fourth and crowning event of the semes- ter, however, was the luncheon given by the 12B,s for the 12A's following the graduation exercises on June 23. The luncheon and program was followed by dancing in the gymnasium. Organized as the 12A Class the follow- ing October the class chose these officers: Maynard Bailey, president, June Hosier, vice-president, Ellen Haanela, secretary' and Lloyd Thomas, treasurer. 1 Two social functions and the tradition- al 12A Day were sponsored by the class. November 18, a tea dance was given at the Birmingham Golf Club and on Janu- ary 16 a dance was held in the gymnasium for the 12A's. December 20 was the day appointed for 12A Day. During the entire day all teachers' positions were held by 12A's. Late in the afternoon on the same day a surprise party was given for the class, the faculty assuming the role of kids and vociferously cheering their teachers.', The most important and outstanding day of the semester, however, was January 12. Commencement exercises were held in the auditorium at ten o'clock. The Reverend Widdifield of St. Paul's Episcopal Church delivered the invoca- tion and Dr. Charles McKenny, President of the Michigan State Normal College gave the address. Diplomas were pre- sented by Mr. Emmons assisted by Mr. Nielsen. Fourteen members of the class were graduated with magna cum laude honors and twenty received cum laude honors. Thomas McGibbon received the Hi-Y plaque for general leadership in school activities. The University of Michigan plaque, awarded for excellence in leadership, scholarship, and athletics, was given to Lloyd Thomas. James Allen and Sally Nelson were given medals for outstanding work in the music depart- ment. Following graduation the class was entertained at luncheon by the 12B's and in the afternoon a dance was given in the gymnasium. And so ended the history of the Class of January, 1933. We are glad that we have had the opportunity ol' attending high school. As we look back on our work here. we wish to express our sin- cere appreciation to the members of the facility for their many courtesies and encourage- nlents which have made our school life more pleasant. It is fitting at this time that we should thank our parents for their cooperation, many ol' whom by their sacrifices have made it possible for us to complete our high school education. Our four years ol' school work will surely award us according to the amount ol' honest effort that each of us has put into them. Years of study and recreation have been character building and have enriched us with a tlood of pleasant memories Io carry throughout our lives. Our school life is the foundation upon which we shall build our future. Our hope is to so live that we shall be a credit to our parents and to the school that educated us. ll' our school life has developed character and a true spirit of sportsmanship. we have the two most necessary fundamentals for the founding of a useful life. Soon some of us will enter college. others will go out into the industrial world to lind work in which we are interested and expect. to make a future occupation. linder present conditions many of us will. without doubt, encounter hardships and disappointments. ll' we can keep our faces toward the front with absolute faith in the future. tackling each job as it presents itself, always working toward something better, with kindest regards toward our fellowmen, we will have justilied our education. .lon Mcztlnuu itlftii 'S THE CARDINAL CASTELLAN OF 1933 MAY CLASS HISTORY AY 25TH was the culmination of' four years of' effort, hard work, and pleasure for more than four hundred and thirty graduates of' the class of May 1933. OWEN A. EMMONS, Principal HE THOMAS M. COOLEY HIGH SCHOOL is now closing the fifth year. Much to the amaze- ment of those who had watched the construction of the first unit of our building, there were 1570 pupils who reported September 4, 1928, the day our school opened. Of this number there were sixty enrolled in the 12-B grade. There were no 12-A enrollments and therefore there was no commencement until June 1929. Our first graduating class numbered 49. Since we had no auditorium, our commencement exercises were held in the library. The first year we had four study halls with counselors Mrs. Grace Jones and Mr. Arthur Wulff' occupying rooms 202 and 201 respectively. Mr. J. H. Schindler used Room 205 which is now a mechanical drawing room and Mrs. Grace Wulfi' used Room 312 which is now a bookkeeping room. The boys whose surnames began with letters ASL were under the coun- selorship of Mr. Schindler and those of M-Z were counselled by Mr. Wulff. Likewise girls A-L were supervised by Mrs. Wulff and M-Z were guided by Mrs. Jones. We were without gymnasium facilities and had no auditorium the first year. During the second year the auditorium and twenty-four class rooms were added. The first class to graduate in the auditorium was that of June 1930. Our enrollment increased rapidly and several excellent teachers were added to the teaching force. Mr. Clarence Blanchard and Miss M. Helen Miller were added as counselors in February, 1930. Increases have been steady during the entire five years and we now have 3750 pupils enrolled with 107 teachers on our staff. ' The first three years of the history of Cooley were productive of many fine accomplish- ments. Our first state championship was won in Declamation by Margaret Ayers. This was in our second year. In debating we qualified and participated in the state elimination contests. ln the five years we have so qualified three times. We are very proud of our success in forensic and public speaking activities. Both of our publications have appeared regularly since the beginning of the school and are given a first class honor rating. ln athletics we were soon recognized in spite of the handicaps we had. Our first three years of athletic competition were administered without a gymnasium or swimming pool. The auditorium unit was completed in the spring of 1930 and our health and music unit in the summer of 1931. The complete building was dedicated May 20, 1932 with very fitting ceremonies made possible through the efforts of our Student Council. We were hosts at this time to several ol' the relatives of Thomas M. Cooley, for whom our school is named. Many of the pioneers of' Greenfield Township and the village of Strathmoor, who had striven to secure proper educa- tional facilities for their children were present at the dedication. During the course of the past five years we have graduated 1280 and are about to add over four hundred more to this list. We are proud of our graduates, many of whom are continuing a program of formal edu- cation in higher institutions. Several have already made records of distinction in the colleges and universities of our land. Our academic achievement, athletic success, skill in public speaking. music and dra- matic productions and work in the field of art, have been made possible only through the excellent native ability of our pupils, the skill and fortit.nde of our teachers and the confidence and cooperation of the parents of our community. tell 69469 wx 0 ,, Rf HS am 1, gg xiii r 'ci' 1 2 3 A GC VI 125 -1- - Y-Y Y?7Y ,, THE CARDINAL CASTELLAN OF 1933 CARDUWAL STAFF Thirrl Ifffllk' lim-x YIYIIUNIAS.
