CHARLES JAMERSON ln spite ofthe tact that Mrs. Jamerson has been a member of our faculty for only one year---our final year---we all feel that we must express our grateful acknowledgement to her for the guidance and en- couragement she has offered to each student who seeks her aid. Her understanding nature and pleasant attitude have made her beloved by all who know her. A great amount of respect is held for her and can be found in the classes she instructs. With all these complimentary attributes, it is only fitti ng and proper that our i956 INDIAN ECHO be dedicated to Mrs. Jamerson. MRS. F. 66 CLASS POEM For twelve long years we've toiled and strived To reach our precious goal. Some have dropped out, but other stayed And Fought with courage bold. Throughout the years we've had our trials But never lost the light. And so with eager hearts and smiles Success is ours tonight. Classmates, the day is drawing nigh To bid each one aclieu. The fun we 've had at Cooleemee High Memory will keep anew. Now as we leave, eyes filled with tears, To go our separate ways. We'll ne'er Forget throughtout the years Those happy, golden days. Mrs. Bost was the girls' advisor and Mr. Young had to cope with the boys. We were in new surroundings, but we found our way around. Cur class officers were: Gerald Canupp, President, Betty McCullough, Vice-President, Shelby Foster, Secretary-Treasurer. S nce we were known as little green freshmenl' we were more than proud when Shelby Foster, Shelby Everhart, Joyce Fields, Merlene Head and Phyllis Freeman made the girls' basketball team. Bill Garwood and Hayden Myers made the boys' bas- ketball team. Sid Hall, Bill Garwood, Teddy Moore, Hayden Myers, and Ted McCulloh made the football team. Bill Garwood, Gerald Canupp, and Charles Templeton made the baseball team. C.rolyn Klein and Ruby Bowles mode the cheerleading squad. A large number of pupils ioined various clubs, so in the sports field the freshmen proved to be not too green after all. During the year we welcomed three newcomers, J. W. Brown and Frances Rose from Dobson, and Joe Childers from Mocksville. After what seemed a short vacation, forty-si,-1 students returned to school as Sophcmores. Mr. Sink was our advisor. Our class officers were: Carolyn Klein, President, Sid Hall, Vice-President, Shelby Foster, Secretary, Charles Templeton, Treasurer. Again we were represented in sports when three girls and five boys made the bas- ketball teams, nine boys made the football team, and four boys made the baseball team. Two girls were cheer- leaders. This year we welcomed a new student, Nettie Anne Wood, from West Yadkin. The year passed and before we knew it we were Juniors. Forty-five students returned to school. Cne of the students was a newcomer, Jean Tokarz, from Delaware. Mr. Ward and Mrs. Price were our advisors. The class officers were: Joe Childers, President, Joyce Messick, Vice-President, Teddy Moore, Secretary, Charles Templeton, Treasurer. We were represented in sports when three girls and seven boys made the basketball teams, ten boys made the football team, seven boys made the baseball team, and two girls were cheerleaders. Our Junior year was highlighted by two exciting events. Under the direction of Mrs. Price, we presented a three-act comedy entitled For Pete's Sake. The Junior-Senior Banquet was held at the Waman's Club, Thomasville. The theme of the Banquet, Moonlight and Roses, was carried on throughout the program. We were proud of ourselves after our participation in the commencement exercises, with six Juniors act- ing as marshals and the remaining acting as ushers to the Seniors, We were then looking forward to our Senior Year. Finally we reached our Senior Year. Mrs. Hicks was our advisor. Our class had dwindled down to thirty- seven. Our class officers were: Charles Templeton, President, Shelby Foster, Vice-President, Phyllis Freeman Sells, Secretary, Shelby Everhart, Treasurer. As usual we were represented in sports when six boys and two girls made the basketball teams, nine boys made the football team, and two girls were cheerleaders. This year under the direction of Mrs. Hicks, we presented our class play, 'A Ready-Made Family. ' We are now looking forward to our Junior-Senior Banquet, at which we, the Seniors of '56, will be the honored guests, our trip to Washington, and the greatest event of all, our Graduation Egercises, at which we shall receive our rewards - the diplomas! We can never fully express our appreciation to our parents, teachers and friends who guided and helped us reach our goal of graduation. May we repay them in part by proving that we are worthy of their efforts and sacrifices, as we, the l956 Senior Class of Cooleemee High School go to face the future of countless days, JANET LINK Historian LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the members of the Senior Class of I956, being of sound mind and realizing that our existence at this school is drawing to a close, do hereby make, publish, and declare this to be our last will and testament in manner and form as follows: ARTICLE I To Our Parents We leave our thanks for their loving care, sympathy, encouragement, and sacrifices to make this day possible. PRIM CLASS PROPHECY Today, Crystal Ball, I ask you to tell me where the members of that memorable class of I956 have wandered. They left me ten years ago carrying a banner of blue and white. During our high school years, I saw them all as they traveled down the road of life leading to the great Metropolis called Ages. I am lonely for them and I know that you can bring them to me through the strange power given to you by the god of mystery, Abra Cadabra. I see a faint picture. Ahl there I can see it clearly now. It is an old classmate, Arnold Bowles, sitting behind a large desk. He is now manager of the Erwin Cotton Mills. Now the picture slowly fades, and a new one takes its place. The scene switches to the hall of a hospital, and walking down the hall toward me are two nurses. As they draw near I can see their faces. They are two more classmates, Ruby Bowles and Susie Webb. As fast as one picture fades another takes its place. Next, the scene is in a hangar at an Air Force base. There, standing beside a new iet plane, are two more classmates who are iet mechanics, Edward Wagner and Gerald McDaniel. Sitting in the pilot's seat is another old friend, J. W. Brown. Then I hear the roar of crowds of people, and suddenly, I am in a stadium. Down on the field, the Cleveland Browns have won another championship game. Who sparked them on? Why, none other than that great scoring team from the Cooleemee team of '56, Bill Garwood and Gerald Canupp. Then the scene shifts to an exclusive dress shop in New York. There I see two models, Betty McCullough and Shelva Ann Jones. Next, I have a box seat at the Metropolitan Opera. There I see two more faces I knew as close friends, Geraldine Wagner and Norma Jean Beck. Next, I hear the sound of a hill-billy band. It is Ronnie Smith and the Silver Bell Rangers. Then I hear the sounds of a busy office. It is the office of the Secretary of Agri- culture, C. H. Nolley, Jr. is seated behind the desk. His secretary is another old friend, Joyce Ann Fields. Then I am inside the White House where I hear the President congratulating a person for a iob well done. The iob was redecorating the White House and the decorator is Shelby Foster. Then I am inside a large automobile plant. In a laboratory I see a man bent over a drawing table. Suddenly he turns, it is none other than Sid Hall who is designing motors for the Ford Motor Company. Sudden- ly, I hear the buzz of a basketball time clock. Down on the coach's bench I see two more of my friends, Teddy Moore and Shelby Everhart, who are coaching at Davie Central. Then the scene switches to a small home where I see a small family waiting for guests. The door bell rings and the hostess, Phyllis Foster Potts, receives her guests, Phyllis Freeman Sells and her family. Now the scene changes back to familiar territory, Cooleemee, there I see Allen Snipes running the Cooleemee Ser- vice Station. While I am standing on the square of Cooleemee, I see a truck go by. On the side is the words, ReNu Clean- ers, The World's Largest, Proprietor, Donnie Hinkle. Then the scene switches to an army base. There I see a familiar face-- Joan Iiames, who is the wife of one of the officers at the base. Then, suddenly, I am in an X-ray room, and who should be running the X-ray machine, none other than Jean Tokarz. On and on the pictures move. Next, I am in the control tower of a large airport. There sits Joyce Messick who is head communicationist. Next, I am on the streets of a large city. I hear the cry, Extra, Extral I buy a newspaper and read an interview of a sports personality. Who wrote it? Charles Templeton, who is the sports editor for the world's largest daily newspaper, The Cooleemee Journal. Then I smell rubbing oll and steam, and I am in a reducing parlor operated by none other than Ted McCulloh. Then I hear the voice that thrills millions of people. It is another of my old friends, Hayden Myers. Suddenly, I am in a National Forrest. I hear a voice giving orders to cut a large amount of trees because they are obstructing the growth of other trees. It is Haywood Graves, who is a leading tree expert. The picture changes and I am in the Pentagon at Washington, D. C. There I see two more old friends, Janet Mauldin and Nettie Wood, who are working for the Commandant of the United States Army. Then the scene switches to the peaceful country side of Pine Ridge. There Janet Link is living happily with her husband and family. Suddenly, I hear something I re- member very well Parlez vous Francais and I am in a French Class, the class if taught by the most brilliant French student Mr. Ward ever taught. It is Professor Glenn Cornatzer, who is now teaching Mr. Ward's son. Then the picture slowly begins to fade, as if it were reluctant to leave. Then suddenly it is gone and the crystal ball is clear. My Crystal Ball has shown me where the Class of I956 has scattered. May they continue to be as gay and as happy as they are now and may they carry the blue and white banner on to new glories and new achievements. PRINCE AND PRINCESS fs.
